Anyhoo, Rolling Stone are muppets. As in total. While all the groups you listed off are/were indeed utterly superb and rightly should be loved by everyone and Rolling Stone may very well agree with that, they also put The Edge above Bo Diddley, Joe Perry, Brian May, Frank Zappa, Ritchie Blackmore, Eddie Van Halen, Tony Iommi and Robbie Robertson in their 'top 100 guitarists of all time' (and how the fuck they managed to totally miss out Steve Vai is beyond me).

Okkervil River-BlackI've lost all respect for you. Have you even listened to any Rush? The instrumentation is absolutely phenomenal.. Geddy Lee is one of the most amazing bassists of all time. All three band members have won countless awards.. and the band is fantastic live. Geddy sings, plays mad bass, AND plays the keyboard with his feet; all at the same time! Sometimes you're just blown away by how much music is being generated by three people.

Urgh. This is the suckiest trend ever.
It seems to be the done thing now to spray your man-love over any band or artist which A) plays a lot of different instruments, B) plays any instrument at a stupidly fast speed, C) has twenty-minute solos for each band member - all regardless of how the final product sounds (since it all, without exception, always ends up sounding crap).
It's just stupid.
Who cares if someone can sing, play guitar, drum, break dance and bake a loaf of bread all at once - if it never goes anywhere (which with these kinds of bands, it never does), then it's still just a total waste of time. Look at Dragonforce - people are loving them because oh boy, the guitarists can play really quickly. Yeah, great. It doesn't go anywhere though, it doesn't add anything to the music, it's just pointless playing that's a waste of time.
Look at Cream - three guys, just doing one thing each (take that, Rush), and they can do more in four minutes than most other bands nowadays with twelve members and everyone playing two things each and a multi-million pound budget can get across on an entire LP. Cream were never the fastest or most technically gifted players when they were around, but at least their stuff went somewhere. With just the one guitar, bass and drums, those three could tell a story without even needing to have a vocal line half the time - and even today, Clapton can still do it. Then you have these shithead bands today who think if they play loud and fast enough and do the most complex thing ever people won't notice the fact that it's all pointless, boring gimmicky shite. Hell not even that sometimes, a lot of groups and artists nowadays just stick to one small gimmick and leave it at that.
Playing one instrument well in a way which is actually useful and really contributes to the track or simply singing well > playing multiple instruments, playing fast or very loudly, or whatever other gimmick a band or artists may have.
Disclaimer: yes, I have listened to Rush. Couple of tracks actually. As it happens I try out basically anything anyone mentions on here, even if it's not a direct suggestion. As of yet, none of you have come up with anything half-decent. I know I don't have the greatest taste in music but jesus fuck, the level of sheer crappy groups that are mentioned on here is quite incredible. You lot really need to start listening to some real music.

Bokuho, it's no gimmick.. you don't even realize he's doing it unless you pay close attention.. and he's the only one in the band who plays more than one instrument at once. There really is no gimmick to it.
In addition, the keyboard adds a great deal of atmospheric beauty to the music, and he plays his bass guitar like a fucking god. Not to mention he can sure sing. The music is not sacrificed in any way, it IS improved as a whole due to this.
Why are you being such a downer, anyway? "Real" music? Your idea of real is absolutely horrendous, Bokuho, and I know you admit to your taste being crappy, but that doesn't change the fact that you're comparing other music to your shitty music, and, simply because it doesn't fit your mold of catchy fun, castigating it all mercilessly. I sprayed no man-love, I was simply expressing my admiration. Also, the multi-instrumentation was certainly not the basis, nor the strongest point of my post.. I'm not sure why you went off on that.
Cream are alright, I suppose.. they really aren't even on the same plane as Rush though. Skill-wise I'd describe them as mediocre.. everywere else is pretty incomparable, it's a different genre. Personally I think Rush tells a hell of a lot better story with their instruments alone.
Let up a little.. quit acting all high-and-mighty. I posted some pretty damn good music back there!
Anyway, I agree, Damir.. you have committed quite a crime. No worries though.. I just CANNOT believe you had never heard of them! Their best album, in my humble opinion, is Hemispheres. Check it out.

More cheerful, meaningless. "female-friendly" type music is usually considered pop, like early Beatles. Contrast this with, say, the Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin.
But what does this say about the general audience? Are they more receptive of a genre that usually does not offend or assume anything about the listeners, that is to say, is "fun for the whole family?" Perhaps the term pop has evolved from popular to the previous form of music just described.

Meh well it's true. Talent is all well and good, but so long as the end product is pleasent to listen too, who gives two shits how it was initally made or what fantastic skills the players may or may not have.
Look at Chesney Hawkes' The One And Only, the whole track shows off Chesney's blatant lack of anything that could be construed as 'talent' (I've never heard a shitter guitar solo than the one in that song), yet the song spent weeks at #1 in multiple countries and to this day is still spammed and loved by millions of students in union bars up and down the county, and not even just under the guise of being a comedy song.
Talent does not equal good music, and good music does not only come from large amounts of talent. Incidently, people also need to re-educate themselves as to what 'talent' is, but I'll save that for another rant sometime...
