Lag online but smooth playing local

Hi all,

I haven't played BF2 for 3-4 months. This machine (built myself last september: amd3500; 2x1GB ram; BFG7800GT) was great for BF2.
I just tested it online on low ping empty servers(below 50). I got consistent LAG. no matter on foot or in the air.

But then i created a local server. Everything ran smooth. I checked my cable internet connection and it looked fine to me. about 400KB/sec

Got any idea before i reinstall the game for my 12 y/o nephew who's visiting us tomorrow for the summer?

A few thoughts:

You're not on a wireless connection, are you? BF2 just isn't playable on wireless most of the time.

When you press Tab in the game, does your ping stay below 50 or does it jump up?

Go to the Server List and take note of the server IP before you try connecting.
If the game lags then exit BF2, go to Start-->Run-->cmd.exe
and type ping ServerIP
See what kind of ping response times you get.

Maybe PB was updating itself causing you to lag. How long did you play in these laggy servers? Maybe try manually updating PB.

How often do you reboot your modem and or router? I can tell when it's time for a reboot when BF2 starts to lag. I will have good pings <50 and lag like a *****. Reboot all equipment and back to smooth playing.

If you still have problems after that, run some line quality test at DSL Reports (www.dslreports.com). Problem could be anything.

Hey Thanks pdc, Merlin and Holle.
Maybe i haven't played for a while and looked like a noob now but like most of you here, i spent tons of time tweaking this stupid time in the summer of 2005.

1. I ditched my router long time ago.
2. PB was updated before i launched the game.
3. No router. so no router to reboot

I think i found the solution:
just disable the windows firewall and log on to a low ping server.
SMOOTH like before :)
Then i was curious and went back to enable the firewall. the online game still ran smooth.

My guess is BF2 didn't know i got a new IP. and i forgot to mention here;)

a blanket statement like that just isnt helpful and isnt even true!

i have played on wi-fi for many years, bf1942 and now bf2 all on wireless, and i have very few, if any issues attributable to the mode of connection, other than the same probs everyone else has.

i think a lot of the wi-fi kit and infrastructure gets badmouthed by "i heard it down the pub talk" and most technical glitches are down to user error and lack of knowledge about the optimal configuration settings.

sure it aint very secure but in terms of providing you with your net connection piped through it, does a fine job.

p.s. my pings in-game on a native uk server range from 12 to 20ms average. still get those figures when i jack straight into a cabled ethernet link from the router. go figure!

BF2 in general is an extremely laggy game compared to other fps games online. So it may not be your connection at all!
