The splinters come from other players and emerge from rooves and behind buildings and if there are enough people playing I become blinded.
This happens with Every version of the game. It has also happened with the medal of honor demo.
I am using an Nvidia 7900 GTX PCI Express by Gigabyte Technology
The Model Name is GV-NX79X512DB-RH.

If anyone has had this problem or knows of a fix I'd be very gratefull.

Sounds like it may be overheating.

First, download the latest drivers.

If the problem persists, check your GPU temps and try cooling your PC more or dusting the inside of your PC.

Either that or underclock your memory a bit.

I'm pretty sure it's been adequatly cooled.

I will look into this.

..an I mention this because I have the EXACT same problem with MY 7900GTX by XFX.

I quickly alt-tab out of the game and back in to clear it.

It doesn't happen very often...but my support conversation back and forth with an XFX tech suggested that overclocking GPU and/or CPU may contribute to the problem and that underclocking the video memory may solve the issue.

It COULD just be an issue with the 7900GTX and BF2, but I'd also seen it happen in Tomb Raider: Legend.

How does it look? Do you just get blinded all of a sudden?

there is a big issue with 7900 gt/gtx's "breaking" read the forums of 3dguru or extremeoverclocking and you'll see what i mean, one guy has returned his card 15 times....all the problems people are having with 7900's convinced me to buy buy a 7800gtx instead.

Im pretty sure that is a driver issue. My mate has a7900GTX and he tried the latest drivers (91.31) so he want back to the 84.21's (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_84.21.html) and everything thing was good again. It is also worth trying the beta 91.33's (http://http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_downloads_rel70betadriver.html)

I have a ASUS 7900GTX and I get the same problem (artifacts while playing). I was not getting them before 1.3, I get those artifacts since 1.3, What about you guys?

Were you getting the artifacts before patch 1.3?

I re-installed BF2 and then the full 1.3, it got better but not perfect :(

Is BF2 the problem or the 7900GTX?

Is the 7900 more powerful than the 7800? I would assume so, but you never want to assume with these things heh.

I had all those issues with my 7800GT EVGA. I borrowed my friends card, which was identical, and it went away. A BIOS update did not help either. I ended up sending it back to newegg and got my money back. My 7900GT does not have any issues, with any drivers.

I have heard a lot of the 7900 series have had fan issues. Because they were able to shrink the GPU core, they reduced the fan size too and it caused issues.

So it looks like this has happened before with the 7900 GTX and battlefield 2.
The pictures in this thread are dead on. It is a game ruining bug and I hope there is a fix coming from some quarter.

The bug was seemingly absent before the 1.3 patch. However the bug continued through all patches 1.0- 1.3 and the 1.4 beta. Also I have installed new and old drivers and it still happens. Along with trying every version of the game. TFrighteningly this bug also happened while trying out the Medal of Honor Demo.

I have been going back and forth with Gigabyte who made the thing and they mentioned overclocking and temperature. I did a test with the temperature and it was running between 40 and 55 celcius. So that is probably not causing it.

Because it had a pretty solid history of running solid I am guessing that this probably a sofware problem.

I hate to say this but beware the Nvidia 7900 GTX by any maker. Until proven otherwise. Thanks for the very helpful feedback.

jesus i half expected to see keith flint from the prodigy dancing to charlie says on that last image! mad as toast

deffo looks like driver and ocing issue had a few moments of pipes showing up in bf2 when on a particular driver plus some gpu ocing. some driver sets SEEM to have a lower tolerance than others for faulting when oced
