The guys over at GameSpy (http://www.gamespy.com/) have posted up their take on Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare today. Here's what they had to say:

The first mission we had a chance to look at was a nighttime op on a large cargo boat in the Black Sea. Arriving via chopper in the middle of a thunderstorm, our squad roped down onto the boat and quickly started dropping any personnel in sight. As is the custom for Call of Duty games, there are lots of little scripted events that keep things moving forward, in this case the chopper sweeping in at one point an mowing down a deck of enemies just when it appears your squad is pinned down.

Later missions, set in the middle east, offered a look at more traditional Call of Duty combat. One level started with a fleet of choppers broaching a desert city with multiple enemies firing RPGs, and we had to drop down into the middle of it.

One innovation that's been retained from recent Call of Duty games is the lack of a traditional health bar. It's a trend several shooters have adopted, and one we're in favor of: rather than scavenging first aid kits to replenish your health, you'll see increasingly dense splatters of blood if you're taking damage, signaling for you to take cover. In this way, the action never stops: you can retreat for a few seconds if you get in trouble and come right back out shooting. Read more...
