taken from IGN:

Call of Duty multiplayer on the PC received a lot of praise, but Infinity Ward wanted to try something different for COD 4. While the Kill Cam is back, you're no longer just an anonymous soldier running around the online battlefield. Modern Warfare has a Halo-like party system and introduces a new class-based system to the franchise. Before you moan about medics tossing out health packs and engineers fixing fences, know the COD 4 is doing its class system in a unique way.

Each class is defined by three perks. Some of the perks are fairly straightforward. Dead Silence lets you walk without making a sound; GPS Jammer keeps you from showing on radar. But there are also some unique and very interesting perks to compliment the standards. The one that seems certain to pique the interest of many gamers is Last Stand. When you take enough damage that you should be dead, you won't fall to the ground. Instead, you pull out your pistol and have a full clip to fire before shuffling off this mortal coil (unless someone pops you). You can't keep yourself from dying, but you might be able to take someone with you. Or, you can choose the "coward's way out" by holding down a button and take your own life to deny your opponent a full kill.

Some of the other base classes include Assault, Heavy Gunner, Spec Ops, and Demo. The class you choose also determines your primary weapon (and attachments), side arm, and special grenade.

You won't be able to pick from the full range of classes right off the bat. Infinity Ward wanted to ease gamers into the multiplayer and reward those who put in the time and played a few hours. Only the Assault and Spec Ops classes are available when you are at level 1. But thanks to a generous XP system, you should be able to get new classes unlocked quickly.

But what if you don't like any of the classes Infinity Ward created? Not a problem. After gaining a few levels online, you unlock the ability to create your own class. You can name the class, choose its three perks, primary weapon, side arm, and special grenade. You can mix and match pieces to create the uniform you prefer and even add cammo designs to your primary weapon for added flair. You'll take that class online in a variety of modes, including Deathmatch, Capture-the-Flag, Search & Destroy, and some new game types not yet revealed. IW has also added several popular COD 1 & 2 mods to Modern Warfare's multiplayer. Chief among these is Realism Mode, which removes the HUD and offers "true" weapon damage.

Another twist to the typical shooter multiplayer is the addition of challenges. While in a multiplayer game, you gain specific bonuses for completing any of the hundreds of challenges. Kill three opponents without dying and you'll gain access to your radar. Earn a five kill streak and you can call in an air strike (with all carpet bomb kills added to your total). Keep up that spree and earn the right to call in a support chopper to lay suppressive fire on your opponents.

There is, however, a tradeoff for all of this. In order to make what it felt was a balanced and fun multiplayer experience, Infinity Ward decided to do away with vehicles in the multiplayer. While this might kill your hopes for a "Tank Girl" class, COD4 multiplayer is likely better off without vehicles and the limitations they can bring.

Specific details on PC and PS3 online functionality remain a little unclear, but we do know that the Xbox 360 version supports Live, System Link and 4-player offline split-screen multiplayer. There's also a demo planned for release on Xbox Live Marketplace, though it hasn't been announced if this will be a single-player or a multiplayer demo.

Release date: November 8th, 2007

Bad. I just lost all hope in the game. RIP competitive COD. COD2 for life.

I don't like the before-dying thing, sounds more like a fungame to me. And the thing with the classes sounds a bit, at least after you created your own soldier, like a non-teambase game...

I think it will be very team oriented, each person will have various causes throughout the multiplayer franchise, except, it didn't mention a medic class?

Coming from a BF2 gamer, I hope it's very arcade-like. And I wonder what the PC multiplayer will support max players of

That discription sounds really good, i only hope they can pull it off. It seems to have all the feel for many different things for many past FPS that everyone wanted and never got.

The only thing I am worried about is that is sounds like they are putting a lot of work into the multiplayer classes, and the fact that you can build your own class after a certain rank which seems to be very in depth, to an extent, I am guessing it's something along the lines of Rainbow6 : Las Vegas where you pretty much pick your outfit, except, it seems they are getting much more in depth then just that; making your gun different camo, dressing your guy, special abilities..etc.

It all sounds really cool but what I am worried about is if they take too much time worrying about perfecting this "nice-but-unneeded" system and not perfect a smooth multiplayer game play.

To be honest, I've never owned any CoD series, I have rented CoD3 for my XBOX360 and enjoyed it, but never owned one. I am really pumped for CoD4, everyone I hear from only gives positive responses about the CoD's

Nice info! But no vehicles? OH No!

I felt vehicles ruined Battlefield2 and other games with vehicles. Ground vehicles like Jeeps and ATV's are ok but when you get into the heavy duty planes and tanks, it just becomes unfun and you find yourself trying to be kits that can defend against these heavily armored vehicles, the same kit you normally wouldn't like to use ...

Hence I only play Infantry Only, it takes more skill to be able to kill with a gun.

Tank = No Skill
Grenade = No Skill
Plane = Skill BUT Unconvienent as everyone goes for the few planes on a map and just sits at plane spawns
Jeeps & Blackhawks = Good transportation

Sounds waaaay too much like 2142 :( .

I hope it has the same 'feel' as CoD2 though, and CAL or TWL better make some competitive mod for it, I actually want to be playing a new game competitively.

EDIT: Found this in the CharlieOscarDelta.com boards:

We taking the competitive community into huge consideration with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for both console and PC. We've been working with some leading Competitive players in the COD community to get feedback on features and options settings to benefit competitive play but still allow the everyone else who doesn't play competitively to play the game as designed.

Some of these features, mainly the 'challenges', seem more of an arcade type feature. Something you'd see on a console.

^ Agreed...some of them don't fit into the CoD style on the PC, IMO

ok... I think vehicles made bf2 PWWNNING! ok... to sit in a tank n blow stuff up may not be skill, but to take out a tank sure is skill... I mean to sneek up to it n place some C4, that my friend IS skill. The granades are skill as hell, maby not in bf2, but in the CoD series, ooh, to crook a granade just right n make it blow just infront of a dude... thats skill... Plane, well... they dont really are a threat... I mean, you dont get killed by a plane that often. Theyre just there so the game looks sweet... ^^ Jeeps n Blackhawks sure are good för transport, they r also awesome to drive when uve got a chopper chasing u, u just see the missiles pass by, I cant think of a better scene than that... =)

But I think it would be best for infinityward to keep vehicles out fom MP tho... Buggys n BHs could be pretty sweet to use tho...

The multiplayer will be a little blah then, I mean, without vehicles, it might be a little dorky, but then again, it isn't a full-blown war or anything

How would it be dorky? There'll be plenty of CQB. A lot more action. Less walking than if there were vehicles.

All multiplayer games don't need vehicles to be 'non-dorky', a lot of games are good without vehicles. The closest Infinity Ward has come to vehicles, was a Russian tank mission in a singleplayer campaign, in Call of Duty (not sure about CoD2). It's not in their nature to put vehicles in MP.

Well, I have been running far over a 5 to 1 Kill/Death Ratio in Battlefield 2 in a tank, but every other weapon or vehicle I use its around 1.75. Now, I'm not leet in the tank at all, just kinda goes to show you how people can rarely blow up a tank if the tank driver somewhat knows what he is doing.

Capping flags in Oman, your just a simple target to planes .. another example why planes suck.

Granted, theres people who have turned vehicles into being skillful, however, I am just straight out happy that IW isn't incorporating player driven tanks..etc in Multiplayer. Seems thats the only thing shooters have been focusing on incorporating lately is vehicles .. it's good their going a different route.

Yeah... the tanks are kinda all mighty, I (who play as sniper) cant do much about them other than prone under them or just hide behind a rock or something. I love that... Anti tank can take out a tank pretty easy... jet and heli too.

Oman is a "jet-map" with alot of open spaces, so staying in the shelters when caping a CP is a good way avoiding the bombs...

But yeah... I think CoD should be without vehicles in MP, always has been (some tanks n buggys were in UO n the first one tho, I liked thoose maps...) and maby should remain so too... =)

I'm glad CoD4 won't have vehicles in the MP. The main style of CoD games by IW are CQC are infantry based. Vehicle levels in SP are fun though
