The guys over at GameSpy (http://www.gamespy.com/) have posted up a new hands-on preview today for the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare beta. Take a look:

It's hard to talk about Call of Duty 4 without first ooh-ing and aah-ing at the graphics. The game looks amazing, from the swaying grass that you can creep through, to the particle effects that'll blow you away every time you fire off an RPG. The soldiers are absolutely covered in minute details that hold up to the closest inspection. Graphics don't mean much when they hinder playability, however, yet despite everything that will go on during a heated firefight, the game runs and maintains a silky smooth 60 frames per second. The way Collier put it, is that there's nothing more frustrating than lining up your sights on an enemy soldier, knowing you have them dead to rights, and missing because of a choppy frame rate. That won't be happening here, that's for sure.

One of the things that separates Call of Duty 4 from other shooters is that players will be able to keep a persistent profile that will gain experience and levels through gameplay, just like in a role-playing game. Rainbow Six: Vegas unlocked new weapons and gear through multiplayer, but the system here is far deeper. Instead of just offering a variety of weapon loadouts like most multiplayer shooters, Call of Duty 4 utilizes a highly customizable class system. While there are generic classes to choose from that will feel familiar to experienced shooter fans, like the sniper, assault and demolitions experts, the way to get the most out of the system is to create your own custom class.
