IGN (http://www.ign.com/) is back today with two new hands-on preview articles for Call of Duty 4. Here is a snippet from both of these new previews:

GC 2007: Call of Duty 4 Hands-On
We had the opportunity to play two single-player levels: Hardship and Bog. Hardship opens with players riding a chopper over stormy seas at night. The destination is a wave tossed cargo ship that is teaming with enemies. Across from you on the helicopter is the mustachioed, cigar chomping Captain Price who informs the team that their goal is a "package" stored with the freight and the crew is expendable. As the chopper closes in on the deck of the ship the assault begins.

It is immediately noticeable when playing Modern Combat that Infinity Ward has wholly maintained the classic feel of the Call of Duty Franchise. Every command is exactly where you think it should be but updated with a modern flair. The controls are just like COD two and three with the ability to crouch, crawl, zoom in with a weapon's sight, heave grenades, and melee attack. While players are joined by fellow soldiers, there is no issuing of commands; you are the front line and the enemy is constantly in your face. Read more... GC 2007: Call of Duty 4 Multiplayer Hands-On
The "challenges" were also present. This feature sets goals for players during a match. Showing incredible aiming prowess rewarded me with a challenge during one match and they can also unlock gameplay bonuses. For example, three consecutive kills will bring up radar. The points and challenges made each round of deathmatch more exciting because not only were people trying to accumulate points, they were trying to do it in a specific manner. Having witnessed the airstrike perk, this is a feature that simply can't be ignored.

After playing the 360 and PS3 version of the game it was jarring to have such tight control over my cursor, especially since the mouse sensitivity was turned all the way up on the first machine I jumped on. After adjust my controls the game felt tight and responsive. It wasn't lightning fast, and there were more prolonged fire fights than immediate deaths. It was also running smoothly on Activision's rigs with highly detailed character models and a nice depth of field effect that accentuated every time I took a face full of lead. Read more...
