For those who haven't been paying attention to Charlie Oscar Delta (http://www.charlieoscardelta.com/), they have announced that GameSpot (http://www.gamespot.com/) is giving away beta tokens all this week. Check it out:

A hundred thousand may seem like a lot of keys. But we expect them to go fast. After all, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is one of the most highly anticipated games of the year.

So if you’re a registered GameSpot user who is also a Xbox Live Gold Member in North America over the age of 17, then come back on Monday, Sept 10th at 9:00 am PT to enter the beta test.

How it works is quite simple: Our big stockpile of tokens will be broken up into five stashes. Each day we will release one of those stashes. If you get a beta token, great. If you don’t, try again the next day. Once you sign up, you’ll get a token code and a confirmation email. You’ll use your Token Code to download the Beta from Xbox Live Marketplace.

GameSpot Beta Token Page (http://www.gamespot.com/event/codes/call-of-duty-4/)

Be sure to check that page every day this week for your chance to get into the beta!

The Xbox360 Beta was only created to test the massive numbers of players they're expecting on XBL when COD4 gets released. It wasn't meant as a special bonus or treat for 360 users.

No public Beta for PC is planned or has been announced at this point.

Dont most games have to be beta tested though? Check for bugs and stuff?

So surely the game has to be tested on different platforms.

Most games are beta-tested by in-house QA staff. Good companies begin testing pre-Alpha, all the way through Final. Platform-specific testing starts long before the Beta stage.

In general, mostly the MMORPG-type games with HUGE online communities have had public-beta testing. This is starting to change, however, as companies start seeing the value in it (ie. Crysis).

IF you have a big enough QA dept, and the time, then for 32-player FPS games, it's not really necessary. But a lot of companies don't put enough time and effort into it in-house, so having public Beta's are useful.
