This is from one of the premier game server providers in the UK

Kiss making general Goodbye. No persistant ranks for us ..we do however get cheaper servers now lol.

You have persistent ranking on PC, we're just not using "ranked servers" the way, say, BF2 does. Anyone can run a "ranked" server, but if you want to run a mod or whatever then you are no longer running a ranked server.

Does that mean it's going to be cheaper for clans, etc.?

It will cost the same to run a server with ranks/stats as it will to run a server without ranks/stats. The server provider doesn't need to check some box regarding stats, I guess you could say it's automatic. It's automatic, but that does not slow down the server. Modified content will automatically disable the 'recording' or ranks/stats, but it won't be any faster.

I'm finding it a bit hard to explain it...

At least I hope there won't be a lot of stupid ppl like that..
This system worked out in BF2, where ranked servers were expensive and admins banned point farmers...

Hmm, that is true. I'm not sure you can farm points as fast as BF2, but there's definite potential for getting challenges easier (headshots, shooting down helicopters, etc.)

It's not at all like WoW. People say it only took them about 3 hrs to get to lvl 16.

The "ranked server" status in BF2 / BF2142 is pretty much worthless, because it is a status awarded by the game server itself not the master server. The master server (i.e. EA / Dice) doesn't verify the "quality" of the server at all, otherwise all the pistol/knife servers violating the Rules of Conduct would have their "ranked" status removed.

So, being "officially ranked" means nothing. Any server can be "ranked". It means nothing.

I agree, you allways could get empty ranked server and farm on it.
So I guess it won't be such a big deal this ranked for everyone.

Also, EA's ranked server restrictions didn't allow most GSP's to give customers remote access to their boxe's because EA didn't want us modifying the ranking files. This was a huge PITA if you liked to play other non BF games. I'm glad they are doing away with this very silly system.

Getting points & medals was fun.....to start with.

My view is now, do away with it all. It change they way sooo many ppl played, they would not give two $hit$ about other ppl on the server aslong as they got what they wanted.

It worked well for BF2, except for those occasional noobs who would boast about stats. Hopefully it won't so in-depth, just a rank with points.

Unlocks was not a good idea. Hopefully BF3 (http://au.pc.ign.com/articles/826/826247p1.html) will be alot better.

The only way BF3 would be good if they ditch the whole ranked server nonsense. Do what IW is doing for COD4.

Ranks are needed in games, people try alot more and have somthing to look foward to like a new weapon or rank. If there was nothing to gain from the game people would get bored a damn sight lot quicker than if there was a rankign system. :)

Games like BF1942, BF Vietnam, hell, even CounterStrike don't have ranks/stats and those games are still being played today.

Ranked/Unranked info...posted by IW member DKo5 today on the IW forums:


Ranked = Gain XP to level up, earn ranks, unlocks, and achievements
Unranked = Earn no XP for your efforts, just playing.

Basically, if you change the way the stock game is at all you won't be able to get XP. This is to avoid any stat padding or boosting. If you play the game normally out of the box, on unmodded servers, you'll be playing on ranked servers earning your XP and unlocking cool stuff.

Good thing is, on unranked servers all the s*it will prolly be unlocked, made cooler+ mods- you know, the way MP games are supposed to be enjoyed.
I doubt I will even play on ranked servers, maybe just now and then to piss some people off when I constantly shotgun them.

I think that right now I really don't care. And can anyone answer me why it only takes 55,000 points to make Brig Gen in BF2142 but it's like 60,000 to make Sergeant Major in BF2? With over 1000 hours required..that's ridiculous..

EA Fubar'ed 2142, it's like they didn't even care or try to make it good. Ranks and unlocks are great, if done right. EA did everything wrong by restricting ranked servers to trusted partners who give little access. By what I've read so far about how ranked and unranked servers will work, it should be a lot of fun.
