I'm sticking with XP for atleast 6-12 months or so. By then prices may have come down a little bit. Then I'll probably go with the cheapest OEM version I can get my grubby hands on.
Personally all the extra 'features' that higher end Vista version have can be obtained by 3rd Parties either as Freeware or dirt cheap. I remember someone designed an Aero Glass Vista theme for XP and a Tech site I frequented has posted the link to download that theme. Microsoft actually threatened to sue the Tech site if they didn't pull down the link.
The fancy desktop graphics don't impress me. All it does is chews up memory and resources that could be better utilitized when I'm in the game. The 'Game Tweaking' feature is something you can do youself for free--and most likely better.
Paul Thorott pretty much sums up my opinions here:

No not at all.
We just have a lot of threads talking about it so I figure I would make one giving info about it and see what other people think.

There is an upgrade version for XP users??
I don't see the point in that though, it would mean less sales for them.

Just a marketing pitch to get more people to accept the new OS at its launch.

Why, the people that already buyed XP are some kind of veterans and they deserve it for less. You can do the same with nearly every software. ;)
You simply get a DVD with vista but without key or and you can use your old one or you show them your xp key or something. ;)

Still overpriced.
If they was to sell VISTA, not all these stupid versions, for $100-$150 they would have alot more sales and less illegal copys out there.
Well, thats my 2cents on that :p

@Dan: There was an article that they realy need illegal copies of their windows out their, it was one of the ways to get people on using it, like sime kind of demo, mostly in the far east(from europe). I know, sounds crazy but its true. :D

well i don't support it but when it comes to paying the bills and buying grocieres, i mean u gotta bet the next day after the releases hundreds of torrents will be seeding out. and i mean saving 200$ is a positive. And i bet money i'll get it off piracy or from a friends burnt copy. But if they were to sell just one main one with more than standard features at around like 100-150 then i would buy it. but 199 to 399 isn't feasable for me

Im guessing that's to reward people with valid versions.

Vista is supposed to have Anti-Piracy measures built into its core....so it will be alot harder for hackers and piraters to get by these defense measures....
So instead of Win XP's WGA getting hacked in less than 24 hours...it will take much longer...1 to 2 weeks....before Vista gets hacked.... :p
