The Polishing Weevils Mod Team, creators of the Obsidian Edge 2 (http://www.obsidianedge.net/) mod, have posted up their first monthly update today. The update is fairly large so listen up:

Each of our monthly updates will be comprised of two parts: First, a Feature Focus, and Secondly a media update of select completed content with news on the Mod.

Our Feature Focus for this first update is an introduction of the team as well as an overview of our process to create this mod. While some folks have heard of us and seen our first mod, many will be unfamiliar with us and what we are trying to accomplish. Then, we have some sneak peeks at completed content at the end of this article. So let us take a moment and tell you about our past, and a little about how we are working today...

Who are the Polishing Weevils?
Over two years ago a group of friends that had crossed over from Ghost Recon to Far Cry fell in love with the capabilities of the Cry Engine. However they felt that both GR and FC had something missing in their gameplay. So the Polishing Weevils were formed with the aim of producing a game that took the best elements from past tactical shooters like Operation Flash Point, Ghost Recon, Ravenshield, Call of Duty and others, and then added their own unique twist.

Obsidian Edge? What’s that all about?
Well it’s a realistic squad based tactical First Person Shooter. When you are looking for a name, you want it to mean something and at the same time be original, punchy and memorable. Suli, one of the team co-leaders, suggested Obsidian Edge as the title of the work. Obsidian is a volcanic glass similar in composition to granite, usually dark but transparent in thin pieces, and having a good conchoidal fracture. An obsidian blade (or edge) can be up to five times sharper than any equivelent steel blade, as it can be sharpened to almost the width of a molecule. A truly unique blade indeed.

Well, the grenade models are the most impressive. The pistol and the tanks look somewhat like a slightly upgraded version of BF2. They don't look too "graphically-advanced" (new term :D ) as some of the other Crysis screenshots. Nevertheless, I look forward to future updates of Crysis and this mod. I'm sure the mod will progress dramatically once we near the release date. I really wish to see a nicely developed Vietnam-like environment mod for this game.

Happy Spawn? :D :p

They were rendered in 3dsmax. Not CryEngine 2.

I personally don't know how you can say they're not graphically advanced. I don't think you can get better models than those?

Maybe I am just being too harsh, but I consider the tank models shown above look worse (not saying they suck either) than some of the models I've seen in other Crysis screenshots.

But that's not even a Crysis screenshot. It's just a model rendered in 3dsmax?

The leopard tank looks exactly like that aswell. So maybe it's just the leopard tank you don't like? in that case, call up the US Army (or whoever) and make a complaint :)

I'm not sure of what you mean by that, but just to let you know, I'm not one of those fanatics that thinks a game sucks just because it doesn't include an Abrams, if that's what you meant.... ;)

I'm sorry if this has gone in the negative side of ways. Didn't mean to "bash" anything.Let's just patiently wait for actual Crysis screens and more updates of this mod. It looks like a very promising project.

Hi Guys,
CuZ from the OE2 mod team here, looks like my old registration got lost between the site moves so I have re-registered :p

PuertoRecon, please dont apologise for passing comments, we want the mod to set new standards, if you think we are doing something wrong, please let us know; we thrive on feedback, both good and bad!

That said, Tom is right...
Those are just Max renders, so there are no Cryengine2 shaders at play there. As such a comparison with the sweet tanks in the Crytek vids is inappropriate. Wait till the new year to give us a review when we release some in game footage of the MBTs...;)

That said, the main reason I dropped by was to let you know that the Obsidian Edge 2 December news update (http://www.obsidianedge.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=85&Itemid=96) has been released (yup we had to miss Nov:( )

The release includes some details on why we have been quiet for a while, we present our Game Mode "ENEMY TERRITORY" and last but by no means least, we unveil some in game screens of OE2 environments...

As always feedback is appreciated either here, or on our forums.

www.obsidianedge.net (http://www.obsidianedge.net)

Happy Holidays all!

CuZ

Yeah, one of the most important things to us is how the game feels, then we need to make sure the we dont compromise on gameplay. Its a fine line we are trying to tread, but Im sure the end result will be worth it.
Thanks for the feedback!
