Hey there,
I am looking into purchasing an 8800GTX specifically for Crysis (or, if it comes in time...an 8950GT2). However, this is my processor setup

You Have: 2 processors running - AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+

If I were to install a topline series 8 card, would my processors bottleneck its power? If possible could someone tell me the best card I could buy that would not experience bottlenecking?

Thanks alot!

Check my Specs ( i wen from a 7600GT, which is one of the best mid-range cards ever)

Offcourse a upgrading never hurts, but people seem to forget the fact that one of the key-elements of DX10 (and u can look it up on Nvidia site if u don't believe me) is to unload alot of processing from the CPU to the GPU.
In DX9 it is not possible, so in DX9 it will be a bottleneck (i however get very good FPS in BF2, the most crappy game which is, to add to insult, not even Dual Core ready, on all high with max AA and 1280*1024. Same in BF2142)
Now in DX10 we would have a far better balanced PC than in DX9 simply because of the fact i just explained (CPU getting it easier, GPU getting stressed more)

Don't worry (oh and on a side note, so u don't think i am a new gen CPU basher: i am going to a E6600 in matter of weeks)

From Nvidia 8800 site:
NVIDIA® Quantum Effects™ Technology:
Advanced shader processors architected for physics computation enable a new level of physics effects to be simulated and rendered on the GPU-all the while freeing the CPU to run the game engine and AI.

Nice one on the E6600!

So basically what you're saying is that...with DX9 there would be bottlenecking...DX10 there would not...

In that case...I may have to reconsider my standing with Vista :p

Yes

DX9 = Processing load goes almost primarly to CPU
DX10 (with beasts of cards which get bottlenecked in DX9 even with a X6800) = Processing load gets split between CPU and GPU AND we are finally going to see games made for multi-core for both DX9 and DX10.
Plus dont forget that games like BF2 never where made for 7-serie Nividia let alone 8 series.

Thats why it is useless to run a DX10 card without Vista if ur not planning on spending the moon on CPU's the comming 2 years + play primarly DX9 games.

However as i said, even under DX10 it would offcourse not use it full potential, think of 75 to 80%, but hey thats more than enough for most hardcore gamers.
In RTS games it is going to be a tougher story, but same deal = GPU's will do more and more processing. (so under DX9 u would have more trouble)

Only problem i am going to have upgrading is that i have to get my OEM of XP to my new mainboard, which is not allowed by MS, but if i am a Vista Upgrade user, i am not going to pay €160 for a license i won't use and i already have, just because i spend alot on my PC.

You can transfer an oem quite easily. When you go to activate it will say cannot activate or w/e. You then call microsoft and they ask you if this is the only computer you have the copy running on and they will give you the access key required to activate.

Ur sure?
That would be cool.
I first try to let it be done by someone i know will help me with it at my Computer builder , because they work with Recovery disks (PARADIGIT).
If that doesnt work i will call MS, or unleash Bokito

Yea I've done it several times due to frequent key component upgrades. They don't seem to have a problem with it.

Does this also work with Recovery Disk method that most system builder do nowadays (in other words i don't have a Windows DVD or CD, but i had to made my own Recovery Disk once)

As far as I know, there's an easy workaround for this.
Remember that downloading something is not illegal if you own a legitimate copy?
Basically, what you should do is: download some image file of whichever version of XP you have, call MS about transferring your installation to another mainboard/PC. They'll then give you a new key, which you can use to install XP using the downloaded image file.

I mean, you have a legitimate key right? The problem with restore disks is that it's pretty much impossible, yet NOT illegal, to transfer them because you have no installation disk.
So, as long as your key is legitimate, it doesn't matter what medium you use to do the installation.

I've never used a restore disk so i have no knowledge of this. But the dling works since my xp home disk was scratched i dled an image and used my VALID LEGAL KEY (so not to get banned) to activate over the phone.

Yeah ... the interwebs sux0r nowadays. I had to emphasize the word LEGAL about four times in my post in order not to get banned. If only those watchdogs would stop trolling forums looking for 'piracy'.

These days at OEM u get nothing, but at Paradigit systems u can make in Windows (there is a extra Program Called Paradigit until u do it, as u are only allowed to make 1) to make a recovery disk so when ur harddrives are complete blank u can still get Xp on again.

I did it once already.

Point is that i read alot of different stuff on the MS website, about how many things (as in scores where CPU is 2 and Mainbord also 2) ur allowed to Upgrade.

There is also something saying that = after a reactivation ur current hardware configuration is set as the base of this identification (so in my case it now thinks i have 7600GT and all my old stuff but after re-activation it should see my new config as fixed OEM point)

One other thing = isn't it a problem that i have upgraded to WIndows Vista Business (with a Retail Vista Business UPGRADE).....

My plan±

-First ask wheter my systembuilder wants to do it
-If not then call MS.
