Navigating BF2 menus painfully slow

I seem to have a strange problem which i cant find mentioned anywhere else. When im navigating through the menus i.e. logging in, changing option generally clicking the tabs on the BF2 main menu each time i click theres a wait of up to 20 seconds between when i click and when the new menu pops up which makes get through any option changes very difficult. The strange thing is this doesnt happen when in an offline account its fluid as normal (as it was before i installed the 1.4 patch i think) does anyone know why this might be happening my specs are

Opteron 170 dual core (I set BF2's affinity to CPU 0)
7900GTO
2GB DDR 400
8mb connection

Ive attempted reinstalls of both windows (x64) and BF2.

Do a search on the 64 XP. I believe others have had issues running with it. The threads may shine a light for you.

i am not sure that is exclusively the reason (64bit) as i have exactly the same as the OP mentioned, and i am on xp 32bit. sometimes its worse than others. but its a strange one, i assumed it was just a quirk of the game and everyone had 'lag' on the menu.

it makes no odds whether my affinity is set to all 4, 2 or 1 processors.
