I built a new custom comp for xmas, bought bf2 and everything worked fine. I was able to run bf2 on highest settings with absolutely no lag. About a day ago it started to get real choppy. I cant ride in vehicles airplanes or helicopters anymore more. I downloaded nvidia drivers and reinstalled bf2 but that didn't work. I have a router, maybe its something with that. my ping is always around 30 though.

I'm experiencing a similar issue only more defined. I just built a new computer and when im playing either online or single player i get no choppy or slow lag at all...BUT the lag i do get is a solid spike freezing my movement for ~8 seconds. In single player i just experienced this and a tank skin also began to look more like a targa format image... faded white and green and the environment sucked too from there. Ive ran all updates on everything... all drivers updated... BIOS good. Level of graphics has no impact from my testing so far... ie all full or all low = no change. I'll recheck my vid card again but im stumped as ive not experienced this before even on a low grade computer running bf2 on all med...

i am sure you have already tried this, but based purely on me matching your' solid 8 second freeze' symptom, this could be a number of things, but PB could be at play here, just yesterday i was tweaking my PB settings in the config file, and when i replaced my pbcl.dll file with an older version i got periodic consistent freezes until i changed it back to a newer version. may be worht manually updating PB (punkbuster).
p.s just to say that EVERYONE is under the impression that you should set your pb_sleep setting to pb_sleep 500 to stop the scan delay a little.
i have recently changed this to 20 on indirect advice of members of punksbusted and on my system its working better.
as if you have a decent spec pc this evens out and smooths PB system and avoids chunks of events happening all of a sudden.
note i have also changed the below lines to there current setting, the system setting to pb_system 0 instead of 1 uses and alternative scanning method for those who believe PB sometimes interferes or causes issues in play.
pb_Lan 1
pb_system 0
pb_Security 0
----------
back up your file, copy and paste my settings and see, it cant hurt!
here is my pbcl.cfg file;
;Auto Generated by PunkBuster Client
pb_MsgPrefix "[skipnotify]PunkBuster Client" //[PB Message Prefix (default=PunkBuster Client)]
pb_Sleep 20 //[# of Milliseconds (default=250)]
pb_Lan 1
pb_system 0
pb_Security 0
pb_LogToFile 0 //[0=No, 1=Yes (default=0)]
pb_SsLog 0 //[0=No, 1=Yes (default=1)]
pb_SsSave 0 //[0=No, 1=Yes (default=0)]
pb_SsOptions 640 480 50 50 1 //- Set local PB screenshot options
pb_load pbcllog.cfg //load remote logging settings (if pbcllog.cfg exists)
