I experience really bad lag playing BF2. Mostly on 32/64 player maps but even on 16 player maps if i fly a jet ot heli. i just upgraded my vid card and still lag even on low settings. is it just me , like a problem w/ my pc or is this normal for my pc specs? Its Very frustrating. The only time the game runs half way ok is with everything on low ,and all shadows/lighting off and 800x600.
but it will still lag on 32/64 player maps and if i attempt to fly.im starting to think there is a prob with my pc or something lol.

Heres my specs

Road Runner Cable Internet
-----------------------
ASUS P5P800 Motherboard
New 470 Watt Power Supply
Pent. 4 - 3.0 Ghz
2 - 512 sticks dual ram ( 1024 )
New ATI Radeon X1600 512 MB AGP

--------------------------------

If I get another gig of ram would it help out? Its really frustrating to lag so bad, especially after getting a new card. i know the x1600 isnt a very fast card but i have to say im very disapointed after buying a new card and its not that much better than my old Radeon 9550 i used forever to play CounterStrike Condition Zero.

thx

Those specs should run fine, in fact very fine.

What you need to do is format your computer and put XP or Vista on it again, and of course install the correct drivers.

Do you have antivirus/anti-spyware/firewall running in the background?

If so, have you tried turning them off and just seeing if they are hogging up too many resources?

Your situation is weird. If you've updated your mobo, gpu, and sound drivers, then a 3.0ghz, 1gb and a x1600 is plenty to play on on mediumish--view distance 100% and geometry to high. Turn off the dynamics and turn off shadows, put it to 1024x768 (or, if you're running an LCD, then whatever your native resolution is), turn off AA and see how it goes.

What about audio? If you're using onboard, it should be set to "software" and "medium" or "low".

Good luck.

i have just about the same specs as you except my video card is an x1600pro PCI Express and im having the same exact problem. Sometimes the rendering of graphics are fine, but my mouse stops responding and when i just tap a key on my keyboard it moves my guy like 10 feet. In other words, its running horrible, but yet i can run HL2 on max settings with no problems at all

Maybe ending some unessary background tasks using the task manager might help

Have you tried running on all medium?

does you CPU has hyperthreading? Try turning it off if it exists.. I dont know about logical processors but dual core cpus have trouble with bf2 sometimes and you have to set then affinities of BF2 process to single core only..

I don't think you are, but turn off any overclocking of your CPU or GFX card, and make sure your computer isn't overheating. Take the side off and put a fan next to it if you have to. Just to see how it runs.

And also try unplugging any unnessecary USB devices and get rid of any background processes you don't NEED. (Although, with your specs, you could run 20 BG processes and have 50 USB devices plugged in and probly still run fine :P)

ive been testing diff cfg's and i'm almost positive whats causing this is the lighting and shadows. although im not positive, it seems to lag alot more if any shadows or lighting is enabled. but that doesnt explain the lag w/e all the lighting /shadows are off.im hoping another gig of ram will solve alll my issues.but i guess its a crap shoot if it will or not.
anyway the game looks like shyte w/out the dynamic lighting and shadowing.

thx for the replies.

post back if that gets you a slice of bf2 nirvana; i've been thinking about getting a 1gb card for my palm pilot and giving her a go, too. :)

Oops. I got your thread tangled with another one. I thought you were the fella' who was going to add ram to his four-year-old lappy to make it oober:

http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showthread.php?t=110486

Sry...I get  sometimes.

Extra ram will definitely help with the loading times and it will smooth things out a bit--and especially when the round is first starting, and more ram will make for an overall better computing experience, but I doubt that tossing in extra ram is going to solve what ever is causing your major lag.

Not with acceptable frame rates. It is a decent card, and it should give you a fun game, but you're going to have to sacrifice some settings. Start with turning the dynamics shadows, dynamic light off, and lighting to low, put it at no AA, 1024x768, geometry high, view distance max, and then work upwards from there with whatever you feel like trading off fps/eye candywise. You might be able to run just fine with 2xAA. Make SURE that you don't have your AA or AF cranked all the way up for some reason, because those (esp AA) will bog your system.

See www.tweakguides.com for a guide as to what exactly each setting in bf2 gives you, and how much it will cost in terms of performance.

Edit: also, go into your bios and make sure that you've got your agp aperture set at 128 or 256. It's possible you're choking your data flow. :)

i recently just upgraded from a 9800 pro 128mb agp to the x1600 512mb & was extremely disapointed , I could play w/ all settings on med w/ 6x anti-alaising on & the game was a bit choppy w/ bad fps, but playable. I ended up selling it because my 9800 pro performed with the same fps's with the execption i could not use shadows & aiti-aliasing. I contacted sapphire & was told my 9800 pro is a faster card. In the long run that card is a piece of sh*t, so i sold it and await a x800 xl pe, hope it gets me playing on high settings (fingers crossed). return it and get a 1650 if u can

specs: pent 4 2.0 , 2gig mem. , 9800 pro , xfi-xtreme gammer, neo 430 ps
waiting for my x800 xt pe !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

waiting for my x800 xt pe

Not to take the thread off topic (but I will, just a little, anyway). I've got an x800xt AIW with an arctic cooling ati silencer 1 rev. 2 and some recycled ramsinks on it. It is a pretty sweet card--great bang for the buck right now--and I overclock mine by 10% in Oblivion and ~15% (560/1160) with BF2. FPS stays above thirty (usually more like 50) with most of the settings on medium, 2xAA, geometries to high and view distance max (I do turn the shadows off and put the lighting/dynamic lighting to low, however). You'll be able to turn some things up a little bit and still get decent fps most of the time.

Do you have your motherboard instruction manual? If so, turn to section 4-22, an under paragraph 4.4.3 it tells you where to adjust your AGP aperture.

If you don't have your manual handy, you can browse your way to ASUS' website:

http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socket775/P5P800/e1906_p5p800.pdf

and wait a minute and a half for the 4.2mb file to download, and then PRINT A COPY an put it somewhere safe in case you need info to fix your mobo and it isn't booting up.

The relevant information is on page 82 of the pdf file.

Good luck.

I have a similar setup to yours with a x1650 pro 512mb. what i did to fix my problem.Replaced drivers with those from Omega Drivers.com.Updated my bios settings. used a reliable freeware program to tweek my windows and the perrifory therof. and finally for all of this trouble the magic still doesnt happen if your not on a server that will not provide a consistantly low ping.I wont play on a server more than 90,the packets take to long and I lag like crazy

I have the same setup as you check for this stuff.Your unit has the oem's psu? I'll bet its only a cheapo unit puttingout 250w max, your card will overheat and loose performance ati recommends 300w min.get rid of your catalyst drivers and replace with omega drivers, these will allow you to customize settings(turn fast writes OFF, auto overclock etc)If you have sound card(mine is sound blaster live) turn off EAX and select software over hardware. hope this helps.
