View Full Version : BF2142: Looks more like a mod than a new game?

Is anyone else disappointed with what BF 2142 looks like so far? It looks like something that could be done as a mod to the current engine. Before it was announced, I was hoping the next BF expanded on what BF2 had already begun expanding on; namely, bigger locations and more team work. This looks like the maps are going to be the same size, and that the game will still be 64 player max. Imagine a BF big enough to host multiple armies, bombers, and even mass transport across huge areas. this is the direction BF should take, not some Halo clone theme that's so played out in videogames that it's boring.
Take this with a grain of salt though, as it's all based on the limited info there is about the game.

Like you said it to early to tell. You dont know what they are plannying to do to make the game run better. Im hoping they make the engine run smother and fix the dam name thing on the ranks. They said they are tweakign the graphics a little bit.
Again ill say it
bf2142 is to bf2 as bfv was to bf1942.
Bfv had minor graphical improvements. Everyone keeps saying "Thsi could have been a mod" to anything ea puts out. And they are right, but do you see anybody putting them out? EA works faster. Dont get me wrong I hate ea just as much as the next guy but the fact they are out to make money and they must realease a new BF game every year,
too bad they don't realize that a good game makes more profit than a rushed game

bf2142 is to bf2 as bfv was to bf1942.
but BFV was by DICE Canada, the people who take care of patches and such. DICE Sweden should be working on new titles, and a new engine. wtf.

Hate to break it to you folks, but you have no idea what you're talking about. I've explained how this game is different many... many... times.
If anyone would like to point out some similarities betweeen BF2 and BF2142, we could start there ("look the same" doesn't cut it).

I am sorry but why make this post if you already know that it is too early to tell:D
No one should be making any criticisms of this game untill they have atleast played a demo:eek:
I know it is EA and some people feal the franchise has gone down hill since 1942 but come on give them a chance this could be the best in the series :p

Its too early to tell from now, but from the pics I've seen the game looks pretty dissapointing.

I gues it does but yes, it is too early to tell. EA put some screenshots out of BF2 and the game looks nothing like it. Like the blackhawk with the missiles over some unknow map. And the view of commander.. So who knows this time, maybe it will be how it is in screenies. If it is, i'm pleased so far.

BF2142 uses a modified verion of the BF2 engine, so no, it can't be a mod.

I downloaded the beta(though I dont have a key, so I cant play online) but I still have access to the files that make it up, and from what I can tell there are ALOT of improvements to the networkable info, and that Titan.....I just dont know WHAT to make of it...but Dice has improved on alot of stuff, stuff that no mod could ever do
I wont go into specifics as even though Im not involved with the beta I till installed it on my machine and therefore am still under an NDA wich I wont break.

I got halfway through I well thought out reply, then realized I was breaking NDA. Oh well, my answer is that I don't think it is like a mod.

I've been in the beta since the closed beta started. Without going into specifics I can guarantee that this is not a new engine and the only thing they've added are effects to the game envioronment. there are other visual changes but like I said I'd prefer not to get bumped after the amount of time I've invested in the testing. If you'd like to discuss this further and you're actually in the beta then just look me up on the beta forums.... I'm under the same name :)

The best thing DICE could do is have people play BF2142 and walk away feeling like they’ve played a mod for BF2 because BF2 did so many things pretty much perfectly, player movement, variation of weapons feel, cool vehicles and maps, people bitching that they want a new engine or whatever must not realize that anything invested in new game engine tech will be based on DirectX 10 and Windows Vista, I want to play this game now not three years from now.

I've been playing the beta and the game doesn't feel like a mod at all..gameplay is a lot different. the feel of the game is different than bf2. the graphics while not a new engine have been obviously improved. the soldiers looks much better and more detailed then bf2. textures look better and the effects are much better. For me this game felt like a new game..it took me some time to get used to it. This game has more potential than bf2 and it builds off what made bf2 such a great game. As long as they polish up the game and get the major bugs out of it by retail release I want think twice about ever playing bf2 again.
I think there are simply too many differences between even the best BF2 mod and this game to call this game a mod, and even if by any way shape or form you could call it a mod, it'd be the best damned BF2 mod out there :p

BF2142 uses the same engine as BF2, so yeah it is a mod due to EA's laziness.

Well from my experience playing 2142, I can say this "mod" kicks arse! The game play is very different that BF2. I can't wait for the full release!

I think there was a mod for BF2 early on that looked exactly like BF 2142. Cant remember what it was called. All I kno is that they ended that project so that DICE/EA could make BF 2142.

who really gives a crap if you call it a mod or not..its a new game with the same grahics/physics engine, but its been improved and modified as well. people whining about not getting a new graphics engine need to stfu(pardon the language), because if they released what that entelled they wouldn't be asking for a new engine. If dice made an all new Dx10 game engine we'd be waiting on the game a lot longer and it would be loaded with bugs because its a new untested engine..just like bf2 was when it came out. The advantage of using the same engine or modified version of it is to decrease production time and reduce the likelyhood of having a lot of bugs.
Also if we got a new game engine people would be crying because the game lags bad on their outdated systems. you can't make everyone happy..some people are never happy.

I agree, they completly overhauled the ranking system, User Interface etc...
Just becasue it uses the same engine just not mean its a mod.

by that definition, quake wars is a mod of doom 3, UT2007 is the same game as ut2004 using a new engine; wich one do you prefer? What about CS? People complaining seem to forget that most companies lease a graphic engine to develop their games.
Escape from butcher bay is a glorified mod then, it works on the same doom 3 engine.
BF2142 works around scoring systems that most modders leave alone; PoE is all nice and dandy, but doesn't let you build your own gear set up, it has no real tweaking of the ranking system and you can play it all day and not advance. And you can't judge from the beta stages what the final game will be like, unless you play every map, unlock everything.
I'm having gripes with the assault unlock since it is a close quarters weapon, and I have yet to test the other classes unlocks; but I realize the gameplay is entirely different from BF2, ti's still arcadey but it's not nearly as broken and it's more close to a well balanced experience than BF2 will ever be.

I love being a big enough nerd to tell another nerd he's wrong, Butcher Bay used a proprietary engine built from the ground up by Starbreeze, they had this really cool Directors cut version which you could unlock and see all the behind the scenes stuff on how it was made. Great game, highly underappreciated.
Anyways, BF2142 isn't a Mod it's a Total Conversion :D
