Well, if you've even taken a few peeks at these forums, you know that I am extremely worried, bordering on insane, about learning what system specs will run on what. First, I want to ask a question about DX 10, obviously, its coming out soon, and no graphics cards have come out that support it. My questions are..

1. Will there be DX compatable graphics cards in the near future?
2. Could you buy a card now, and download a driver for the card later that would support DX 10.
3. Is this a stupid question.

Thanks in advance. Near future isn't that clear either, I mean...in the span of 2006, or before 2006 ends.

1. yes when its closer to launch
2. I dont think so, to have a fully compatiable DX10 card you hayve to buy one after it comes out.

I think you might be able to d/l something mayb e to make your old card work but I doubt it and even if you can you will not get all teh features of DX10 like Hi Def capabilites for games like crysis.

DX10 will only be for people who upgrade to Vista, Windows XP isn't getting it and it'll require a brand new graphics card to take advantage of it, none are DX10 compatible right now. Vista has a special version of DX9 so that older games will work on it (BF2142 is a DX9 game).

Some games will be released as DX9 games and have special versions available for DX10, Crysis and UT2007 are two games that will work with both, obviously the DX10 versions will have more eyecandy and cool effects.

I heard vista is buggy as hell, and don't plan to get it unless there is a bootlegged version here in china..which is what I how I managed to get both windows 2000 and windows XP for...about...40 cents USD. I'm serious.

1. DX10 cards will be available early 2007 but i would wait till 2008 before buying 1 cause not many games will support it till DX10cards are in the mainstream;)

2.Nope you cant download a driver for DX9 cards so they work as DX10 as DX10 is much more advanced software/hardware.

And VIST is not buggy at all i have the beta 2 on my PC right now and it runs like a dream(just dont run all programms at the moment);)

DX10 games WILL work on DX9 cards, just without the new effects.

1. Yes. about 1 to 2 months after the spec there should be DX10 cards. But just like DX9, First Generation cards may not support all of DX10's features. And you might find yourself buying another vid card prematurely. I wouldnt buy any first gen cards.

2. No DX 10 requires hardware changes not software.

3. If you honestly dont know the answer, then no its not a stupid question.

You're worried over nothing. DX 10 will not be "required" for games for several years. This past year we have just started seeing games that must have dx9 to run. The DX api allows dx10 games to run on dx9 hardware just like dx9 games can er could up until last year run on dx8 cards. Around this time next year or even closer to christmas 07 I would start looking into getting one. Unless you absolutely have to have bleeding edge tech. And don't forget Vista is required for DX10 (another reason DX10 will not be widely adopted as the min requirement for some years.)

If you have any other questions hit me up on xfire (bfdhud) and i'll answer them.
