View Full Version : Does rank reflect any skill posessed by the player?

The reason i ask is that when i'm flying a chopper and looking for a gunner i will take anyone no matter what rank. But recently, i have found myself frustrated by lower rankers that don't appear to be able to kill anything no matter what.

I line them up with easy infantry targets and won't shoot them because apparently they don't see them. So is it better to take on higher rankers or does it not matter.

Of course it could just be me being bitter towards other players as i have played the game for longer. A bit like old people towards young people. They despise young people if they stand on the street or shout too loudly.

What are your opinions?

I dont think of high ranking people neccesarly as skilled but every time I see a corporal take off in a jet the jet is back to its spawn in less then a minute. I really just use the rank system to explain why somebody could be sucking so bad or be doing something noobish. I checked the last one because to me most of the low ranks are new therefore less skilled then most but some people that are a at a low ranking skill level can stat padd and disquise there low rank ability with a high rank's insignia.

They proberbly dont know they can take off the gunship decals by pressing c. Thats why they cant see.

no
definitely not(for the most part). score per minute is a better judgement, but even that doesnt tell a whole lot.

you know whats weird though? i have been playing poorly on my new account, so i went back to my original one with 80k points, and i started playing A LOT better.

pressing C does not make a diffrence for me I kind of like having that cockpit view.

What he said.

Saw a Lance Corporal the other day take off with blackhawk @ the carrier in wake island, about 3 seconds later he barrel-rolled into the water..

No, because the people they play can vary server to server. And even if you have good rank does not mean you will be good in competition.

I have seen tons of people with high ranks playing like a first timer. Plus many of the high ranked players are inf/karkand noobs that cant to **** in helo or plane.

sometimes yes, but the reason they have a high rank can be that they play very much, and i have also seen very good, low ranked players.

Any sap who puts in over 4000hrs plus in the game is bound to be a high rank, just because of the time played. I'm not saying this is the majority of the players, but it is true to some extent.
Look at ppm, total time, total points and accuracy.
Those are the four things that make up a good player.
I'm talking about a non stat-padding, non-hacking player of course.

a high k/d ratio is also important to be a good player

Hang on, so if you can't use a helo or a plane suddenly makes you a bad player?? Well unfortunately not the entire team can be in those vehicles at the same time so they might just have to ground pound. I prefer it personally, moving as a squad, helping team mates to make progress by capturing flags rather than flying in the skies. Just my opinion and i know that good pilots can help take flags but you can't say that just because you can't fly makes you a bad player...

it does to some extent

i have yet to see a 2ndLt or higher shoot a tank with a GPMG

though some 2 stripers and sergeants do well in vehicles

and yes some higher ranks suck

but high ranks are cool :) hehe

It's what makes the game so diverse. People who have alot of time on their hands get the points and not necessarily the attributes that accompany them.

just to back my point up

yesterday there was myself and two other colonels in a server.

flying the chopper with one he was hitting everything and generally we pwnzored, but then the other colonel got in and was piloting me just to fly straight at a tank get hit by it, and then crash within about 1 minute of flying

i think he is the second to worst pilot i've ever seen and the worst kigh ranked pilot i've ever seen

Not really because some expert player may get bored and start a new account, then people start yelling aimhax at him :p . That or he really does have it.

As for the distinguish by rank, it just depends on my day. If i'm good i would support the lowey and give him some pointers. If i'm in a bad mood, I would end up yelling noob.

yeah rank is only an indication of how well you can stat pad and how much free time you kiddies have... there are a lot of guys with lower ranks (b/c they don't play much) with more skill than a general....

conversely the longer you play you *should* get better over time

DesertFalcon

well it is possible to reach LT as infantry and never get the chance to fly.

ive been owned by privates and corporals and i have also owned generals...

i think rank doesn't reflect all that accurately... then again you always see those generals that have mastered absolutely everything and even if they're killing you... its fun to watch them work!

Well ive saw privates and Corporals own it up so i dnt think that the rank matters all that much. And also i think that they have another acc that they get good on.

Sometimes it just depends. Like when a general has a LOT of hours played it doesn't mean he has a better score per a round than you it just means they play a lot

I've been playing this game since it came out and currently my rank is Private(or it was, haven't checked in months)....

Does that rank automatically make me an inexperienced player?

Badlizzard2

Rank can mean they are at least experienced, I have 3 accounts though and one I just started during the stats outage has only Corporal, yet my primary account is almost a General. The odds are a Colonel or General will be a better player, but not necessarily, they could have padded to get there and have no clue how to play.

High rank does not necessarily mean more skill or the such. But as a Lt. Col I can say that the experience factor helps a ton. I just trust high rankers to be good more than low rankers, because they will know the ropes.

Cheers

Yes, you have less than 150 points after playing the game since release?

I say no because what if they have multiple high ranking accounts and you catch them on their new Private account? Doesn't show their a noob, but a very 1337 Private

I think your missing the point, those people really are high rankers as you say. So thats what they are: SKILLED HIGH RANKERS, even if it is a second account they are HIGH RANKERS. Not like a a second account makes you a low ranker you are still a high ranker with the experience and skills that come with that.
And to the person who said there is little difference between the ranks of staff sarge to general... Would you rather have a match against a team of colonels of staff sarges ;)

Cheers

I have seen many really, really bad players around with high ranks. When you question them they get all defensive.

Yes, it is their account.
No, they haven't been stats padding.
Yes, they are only interested in playing on ranked servers (because they need xxxx amount of points to rank up!)

It takes a lot of skill to turn towards the nearest enemy, jump in the air and dolphin dive, then empty clip after clip into the enemy then throw yourself medic bags on the floor to power up again. <sarcasm.

We have a way of dealing with things like that in PR. "ooh! out on your own again without your squad, looking for those l33t kills? Guess you're walking a long way from the last spawn point to here again, haha!"

RocketChild

You know, I have to say "it depends"

It seems that everytime I have a squad full of people that have less then 30K points, whenever we get into a firefight, I am always the last one standing. So, either I am decent without rank level, or just that lower ranked plays tend to have less accuracy. I don't think they can hit a target for ****.

But when I was at 40K, I was actually a very good player, I just had a weak machine and could not play often. Those were my hurdles from having a high rank (even now, I still have problems getting time in).

So, I know you can be a lower ranked player and kick ***, but it seems that lower ranked players have not found a way to move around a map/enemy. They let themselves get caught in the open, or shoot a gun to get the enemy's attention, or just don't know to flank a target instead of going right at them.

So, it really depends, because I own a hell of a lot of generals it seems, and I am only a Captain.

well when they make new accounts and are skilled it wont take them that long to reach 2,500 points and become a seargent.

Armitageman
08-10-2007, 04:21 AM
Well I'm not exactly sure what my "rank" would entail other than how much effort I put into something. A person can be a high rank in kills and points and yet never taken the opportunity to work on all round skills like piloting. Some people find what they're good at rather quickly and some take time. And even then it's no guarantee that they won't find something more amusing to try and suck at it when they do so.

That's why I say that rank has little or nothing to do with it. Personal experience and observation mainly.

agreed. when bf2 first it might have reflected some sort of skill, but the games been out so long it doesn't matter what rank you are cause if you've played long enough you'll get have a high rank eventually

i agree, i have a friend who is a total beast at games, mostly halo, and i just got him into bf2 and he freaking rules, he is a lance corporal now but thats because of the low playing time.
