Seeing as we're a community of gamers here and our network covers many FPS games, a new study has been done that could interest a few of you. The study claims that those who play violent video games will have improved eyesight. Check it out:

Playing "Gears of War," "Lost Planet," "Halo" and other action video games that involve firing guns can improve your eyesight, new research claims. Sedate games like "Tetris" don't work.

The study involved 10 male college students who started out as non-gamers and then received 30 hours of training on first-person shooter action video games. They showed a substantial increase in their ability to see objects accurately in a cluttered space compared to 10 non-gamers given the same test, said Daphne Bevelier of the University of Rochester.

Most aspects of vision have to do with the size of one's eye and the thickness and shape of the cornea and lens. But some visual defects are neural in nature, said Bevelier, author of the new study on vision and video games published in the journal Psychological Science.

First-person shooter action games helped study subjects improve their spatial resolution, meaning their ability to clearly see small, closely packed together objects, such as letters, she said. Game-playing actually changes the way our brains process visual information.

"These games push the human visual system to the limits, and the brain adapts to it," she said in a prepared statement. "That learning carries over into other activities and possibly everyday life."

The finding suggests that playing first-person shooter action video games could be a useful rehabilitation therapy for people with certain vision problems, she said, such as amblyopia (or lazy eye) and the simple effects of aging.

I was once told that i could see tiny things in a room or out in the city more in a complex situation, i always thought this was down to gaming, looks like i have been proven correct.

Don't worry. I watched a show about this very thing a looooong time ago on the discovery channel. I've known this for about 2 years. FOX is just slow, I guess. :p

What a load of rubbish.

when genuine players get accused of cheating it all boils down to better hand eye co-ordination ;)

No benefits at all, imo, makes things worse.

Well I've never heard of this study, so this is astonishing news to me. I don't know how many people will actually accept this as a practical application, but it sure is a defense against those who want to ban violent video games. They should ban tetris instead.

camper.

Well no ****...

Especially in BF2, on a hi-res display, infantry are just a few pixels that most people overlook. Spectating some people in CS, it's amazing the mistakes they make, I've seen enemies walk right past some in a 1v1.

many reports like this have been released and more are being studied, violence can be caused by many games from time to time the blame gets shifted from one thing to another.

Neat, I've been playing almost 4 years of FPS and my eyes are still 20-20.

I really doubt my eyes get any better from computer gaming. Tbh I think I get worse eyesight... It obviously isnt a good idea to stare into a screen for hours at a time! You DO get a more curved neck though...

i play loads of FPS's and i wear glasses so nope. didnt read all replies so it may have already come up.
the reason behind this is because when for example playing BF2, you need to be aware of everything that pops up on your screen in order to have any real chance of staying alive. look away for one second and you'll find yourself "critically wounded";) so i think that these people that were tested have just trained their eyes in the 30 hours playing time to notice more in their virtual surroundings, hence the improved test results.
i know i've just written a reply to the it, but is anyone else thinking "who the hell thought 'lets do a test to see if FPS's improve eyesight'"? i mean come on, what grounds would you need to come up with that one?
go and do some real work:p
then again, i suppose its a change from the usual
violent videos games make people want to kill each other

Of course playing fps improves your reflexes, and at least a certain kind of eye-to-hand coordination. The eyes, the brain and the hand are all parts of the body that can be trained to perform certain things faster. That's the principle of training in general, I see no wonder in that.

I am sure you just get trained and therefore when you'll notice a small bunch of pixels moving at the border of your field of sight, your brain gets the habit of focusing onto it much much faster that for a "non-gamer". So it enhances the way you treat the visual stimuli you get. For sample, I noticed that I am quite faster than the average of my relatives when I drive a car. I will spot cars braking beyond the scope people usually look at on the highway, I have the habit to watch carefully all my field of view when I drive and also to react and interpret very fast what's happening. It think it's an habit I got from gaming : an ability to be really focused on the road, the other cars, the whole picture and have the car much quickly in control than an average driver. Also, I'm not quickly tired of driving long distances. Driving a car is much similar to playing a fps game to me, in terms of mind focusing I mean (I don't "frag" pedestrians ^^).

But about real "sight", I really don't think it changes anything.
