My memory is not completely reliable, but I think that before the merge hyperlinks would stand out from the ordinary text in some way.

I think it is a really useful feature, because it is otherwise not always apparent the people have included some links in their text.
So even if my memory is faulty, I would still like to see it done that way if possible :)
