*cough cough*

Since everyone here on TotalCrysis seems to be graphics geeks I found this the best place to ask... :p

So I've been saving money since I've bought my new computer in may. I've been playing my games with a crappy Nvidia Geforce 7500 LE 128 mb card up til now, and I plan on buying a new card this Christmas. The thing is that I don't have much money... And I want to buy Orange Box + Crysis as well... so which of these cards would be the best?

XFX Geforce 8800 GTS 320 mb
or
Asus GeForce 8800 GT 512 mb

?

They cost about the same and I can't afford any GTX card whatsoever. I'm not very keen about OMFG über 1337 performance but I just want the better option ;) I also don't want to wait until I get more money, as my age can prove I don't have an income of my own so I must rely on my monthly allowance money :p

Also I wonder if there's a way to find out what your PSU is? I have the papers that came with my computer but I'm too lazy to actually go find them ^^

I'd be very happy for some help :yay:

The 8800 gt has the performance of a gtx nearly for half the cost, definently the gt.

The GT will also be more friendly when it comes to compatibility issues. I've had to upgrade componants 3 times in 4 months because i kept getting the top end of something which then didn't work with existing sub standard hardware. In the end i have a new pc in an old case. Replace that and its a whole new pc under the desk. I only wanted to upgrade my X800PRO Gfx card :(

The GT won't play the game at a high resolution though whereas the extra memory on the GTS will. If you dont play on any higher than 1280x1024 then the GT 100% if not, then the GT 80% ;)

If you didnt notice the gt has more memory than the gts so it WILL play better at higher resolutions than the gts.

lol completely out of my budget :D Again, I don't care much about being able to play at the highest graphics... And I also never pull the resolution up higher than 1024*768... that's really good enough for me.

Also if I get the GT and buy another GT card maybe half a year later (at the summer I guess) would that be a good investment for the future or would I be better off with the new 8900 cards or the 9 series? I probably wouldn't afford neither but you can always dream... :)

Thanks for help

Try and get an XFX model GT if you can, they pre-overclock their cards.

Cool. The Asus was slightly cheaper but affording the XFX isn't impossible.

EVGA all the way and the 8800 gt will do you good.

I see now :) so yea GT all the way ;)

Next summer the GT's will still be the same price. They are so in demand they are the Wii of Gfx cards.

Thanks everyone :yay:

I have another question though... At the site I'm buying it they have three versions of the cards:

8800 GT 512 mb
8800 GT 512 mb XT
8800 GT 512 mb XXX

Is there any difference in performance at all or do the last two just have fancier names?

If memory serves me right:600MHZ, XT=650MHZ, and XXX=700MHZ clock frequencies are the difference in the model numbers.

The GT is def. the way to go. Go to http://www.guru3d.com/article/Videocards/468/ (http://www.guru3d.com/article/Videocards/468/) for a descent review. It is based on an SLI setup, but you can see some numbers for single card set-up also. THe 8800GT beats the 320MB GTX and pushed real close to the 768MB GTX. If you have a the patience, wait a couple of weeks and the prices "should" drop down into the $200 - $250 range. ATI is due to release their new card in the next week or so so I predict a bit of a price war. At the moment Amazon has the BFG Tech 8800GT for $249.99.
