I'm a developer with a long history of game playing in CoD, BF, and other war simulations. I've never done any modding however and I'm looking for information on getting started, especially for CoD 4.

CoD 4 is the best of its type of game out there right now, but I feel that it has some issues a variety of mods could help to solve. Mostly concerning an increase in its playability from a strategic team and tactical standpoint.

Personally, I don 't care much about skins or other eye-candy, provided a "modern" and/or futuristic theme is used. My main concern is in opening the game up to a less restrictive environment theough the use of maps, timing changes, objectives and goals, and over-all team play management.

If anyone can offer me some advice on getting started, the tools needed, or even if I could be helpful in a mod that is currently underway, I'd greatly appreaciate hearing from you. Thanx in advance!

I would definitely prefer to see a mission editor (with map editor included) than anything else.

Would you happen to know if a map editor and/or scripting instructions for modifying the game play is forthcoming?

ok first of all, modding takes time.. Ive tryed it a few times, not in cod4 but in battlefield and css... I gave up when I had been modding and modding for like a week, which probably isnt alot of time and had a result of basicly nothing...

Modding is really hard, requires lots of patience, trial and error. Its not until you actually start that you realise what goes into a game and how much time it takes.

If you are new to this, then COD4 is probably not a good place to start as it is a new high end game which requires complicated maps and skins. If you want to learn you should start out with simpler games to mod like counterstrike or unreal tournament, to get a hand of the basics - And believe me those games aren't easy either so I suspect COD4 would take 5 times the effort.

By the way I understand Battlefield is incredibly difficult to mod compared to the likes of CS, simply because it was a newer and more complex game.

The quick answer is yes. The devs are hard at work readying the mod tools. In fact, the recent 1.2 patch was to prepare the game to be compatible with the soon coming mod tools.

I too would like to see this game seriously modded for realistic missions concerning strategy and tactics.
Yes, modding is hard work but if your committed then I look forward to your mod work on this game. :salute:
