ive just bought a new pc and to be honest its slower than my old system at playing bf2.

my old specs
2.4ghz
1gb ram
radeon 9800se
windows xp 32bit

new system
intel quad core @ 2.4ghz
2gb of ram
gefore 8500GT
windows vista 32bit

now the problem is it takes like 15mins for the verifying client data and with my old one it took like 2mins. also my special forces expansion cd says my cd is invalid and lastly when i am in game it is extremely laggy, more than my old system.

i have switched of UAC in vista and i have installed bf2 in xp compatbiliy methods and also the normal way. i run the program as administrator and i have updated pb. any other ideas. if it helps i can run quake 4 on full settings with 91 fps if uncapped and i can play quakewars on full settings with around 78 fps

imho, you should have gone for an 8800gt and a less good processor, that would have helped the most.

it did come with my pc. i dont see whats so bad about it, it can run everything on high but this verfiying client data and lag spikes are really annoying me. and i am sure its not my gfx card because i can run the crysis demo on full settings.

The problem is the 8500GT is a budget card and that 9800 is quite frankly better.

Anyway, make sure you have all the latest drivers fro ur comp including the patches from Intel & MS.

Scan you computer for adware, spyware & Viruses using Spybot S&D, AVG Free, CCLeaner, Avast Free.

Defrag your hdd and look at this tweak guide. (http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html)

Its not his card, i have the 8600m GT and i have EXACTLY the same problem, futhermore, i've read many posts by people with the 8800 who have very similar syptoms. I have recently got this computer and althought its not awsome, its certainly good enough to run BF2; my old computer, with specs half that in this one, ran BF2 more smoothly! I have heard every suggestion on how to run BF2; i have installed bf2 in xp compatable methods and also the normal way. I run the program as administrator and in XP SP2 compatibility mode, I have a fully updated punkbuster, recently updated drivers. I've got a 8mb cable connection which i am connected to WITH a wire.

After much research and forum trolling i have come to several conclusions:
1) not everyone using a 8000 series card suffers from these problems.
2) however, everyone who does has either vista, a geforce 8000 series or both.
3) BF2 isnt the only game to be affected, i have read posts that bear striking similarities on the WoW forums and one player mentioned another online game called gunz (or something along those lines).

Personally, i think the problem is one of the following
1) Vista is guzzleing RAM, in my case 1GB is not enough once vista has had its way with it. (of course this will not apply to those of you with 2GB+, however from what i've read, the choppy lag experianced can happen to both 1GB and 2GB+ computers)
2) Something is wrong with the ports or the way they are being managed by vista; in this senerio the graphics card has nothing to do with it.
3) It is the drivers that are wrong or they are being incorrectly managed by vista. I read on one forum that downloading the newest forceware drivers from guru3d.com solved a similar issue for WoW gamers, (the thread can be found at http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?act=Print&client=printer&f=19&t=21265 )

I hope someone can find a solution because I've tried everything and been searching the web for hours!

I forgot to mention, i found this microsoft update that specifically referes to improving BF2's compatability with vista, i already had it but it may be of use to someone.
The update can be found at

Yep my desktop with XP and a 7900GT runs games beautifully, but my new lappy with Vista and a 8600GT struggles... and I have 2GB of ram. Vista DOES guzzle almost all of it. It doesn't help that nvidia haven't even released a driver for the 8600m GT!!!

^^^nah dude, the 8500 is much better card.......

I tink its possible not enough ram with vista, can you run the game & minimize & take a screenshot of the performance tab in task manager & post plz.?

I'd say the problem is definately in Vista. I had lag in most games when i was running Vista, and i remember some drivers fixed some of the problems, but not nearly all.
