I myself just pre-ordered, so I'll get two free unlocks... A headstart if you like. :p

Not decided which I'm going to unlock yet, I'll probably wait for the demo actually.

To be honest, the speed in which you get unlocks early on in the game is almost on an unlock-per-round basis. 1 unlock for the Vet Program/Pre-Order is really, really modest.

Here's an idea: Keep hold of it. Dont use it right away. ;)

I will use it right off the bat. I do not think I will benifit from saving it for later because no matter what you are still two (or one) unlock closer to the max you can get.

I don't think they are "free" unlocks in all senses of the word. I'd wager they just promote you through the first two ranks. So why joe-smoe needs 40pts to get his first rank/unlock (lvl2?) You'll already be two ranks ahead of him (lvl3) and working toward your 3rd rank up (and hense need more then 40pts.) You won't have any more/less unlocks then anyone else, you'll just get access to them sooner. You're only getting a couple round start on someone who's not a veteran/preorder person, but damn if it isn't good marketting. ;) Especially when you consider the way BF2 people view unlocks.

For my recon guy I'll need Nades, then C7, then claymores, then continue down the C7 path all the way down to the Lambert Caribine. This'll be my Titan assault guy. :)

In my opinion guns are worth more, maybe they should of made it 2 unlocks to get a gun. But hey!! im not complaining ;)

Were teh drones in tribes balanced? Or where they over powered?

they were little ones about 2 feet high (if they were real). One was used to be attached to building the other had a little drill to drill itself into the ground.

the indoor one had a little energy shooter that shot little pink balls of energy at you. the outside one had a more powerful plasma shooter.

While you could be killed by the things, they weren't very hard to take out.

I used to place them everywhere and several in an area could create some deadly crossfire. while you can take out one by yourself, 2 or 3 would take you out.

Call me a liar later on if I'm wrong, but I don't think you'll have a choice "when" to use that free rank up.

I also think I'll sandbag my unlocks at first and figure out my playstyle, which class I'm diggin' the most, which one I need help with, etc... And pick along those lines. No sense in saying now (with 0 hours) "I'm going <insert class here> all the way!" Cause I may very well find out I don't want to do that.

What I wouldn't mind seeing some opinions on is:

Will you shoot up one class at a time, a one trick pony? Or spread them out and bring 2-3 classes up in alternating fashion, giving more flexability?

Like the person said below you. It took 2 or 3 of them to take you out fast. They were mostly used as defense in clumps around the flag. If they were laid in the middle of the battlefield/fight they would be taken out really fast, and was a waste. If you encountered one, you could easly take out it. The only thing that got you is if the gun got the jump on you, you were in a little trouble.

To answer your quesion, is yes they were very balanced imo. Tribes was a very balanced game too imo.

Ahah! now that IS news to me. First I've heard of any card or code. That very well could mean that your veteran promotion happens right away, and everyone else will play like gankbusters till March 30th before redeeming thier pre-order rank, but that doesn't sound too plausable. More likely, is once you've ranked up once IG, you lose the ability to apply "any" upgrades. They put the March 31st date in there to account for a shipping delay (and who really believes the Oct. 10th date anyway) and to account for other shipping/handling/account name delays. They have to have a date in their for legal reasons, so why not pick one close to when ET:QW will ship? Because if you're not playing 2142 by then, chances are, you never will. :p

To answer your quesion, is yes they were very balanced imo. Tribes was a very balanced game too imo.

I agree 100%, it was really balance and i dont think ill see another game like it. The turrets were balnaced, they can take a good amount of damage off you with 2 or more but you could easily destroy them. Also they saw you from a pretty far distance so it wasnt that easy to avoid.

Agreed there my friend. We know Devs read this forum. If they could spell out how exactly the whole veteran/preorder scenario works, it would save a lot of time. But then what would all of us "Not in Beta" people talk about? :p

it clearly says on their veteran registration page that you will upgrade and get an unlock. Heck, it's the least they can do for return customers that went through all this junk we've put up with since BF 2 1.2.

When every troop is standard armed with a disc launcher I'd say it was balanced.

The unlocks dont work after you gain a legitamte rank, so you cant save them and wait until you need 30 000 pts, then just use one...

I heard that the pre-orders are going to ship 2 days before they release it in stores. I'm not sure if it is true, but shipping it earlier would make more sense. Also i know this is off topic, but what does the mini-quote button do that is to the right of the regular quote button?

I don't understand this anymore if you claim your veteran status after ranking up twice then you will not rank up, but will get an unlock. You will then have 2 unlocks in after ranking up twice. If you claim your veteran status now you will only get 1 unlock afetr ranking up twice.

Yeah one unlock with the veteran status, and another with the pre order. you do not rank if you claim it after you've already ranked up, and no rank=no unlock.

Except it says that you will still get the unlock but not a rank up. Other rewards=Unlocks

Other awards for your Veteran status, like the icon, verbal taunt etc. The point of the whole thing was to get a free rank therefore an unlock. Why would they make it that way, its pretty much the same thing except without the rank, they try to prevent you from getting a real high tier unlock without doing anything, so this doesnt change anything, say your 10,000 points from your active camo, you can get it with no work at all. The only differnce is that you dont get the new rank just the unlock.

Pending on what the maps look like from ground level, I like the recon class. I love sniping in most game bf2 is well useless sometimes but anyways if I see its going to be an awsome sniping map ill get the stabilizer and bigger sniper rifle or carbine or c7. Like someone else said we have to wait to see gameplay style.

I was going to go that root at first but I found that if you go Heavy assult, (so you get all the combat gizmos not the first aid crap) it is way easy and fun to defend the titan becasue of all teh extra gun goodies you get.

I have not tried the lite yet but you cant beat the rocket and shotgun unlocks when defending.

Defending/attacking a titan is always laggy for me so I dont like to go in those things.
But as my favorite BF2 class is assault, I will upgrade my assault right after I got my recon updated ;)

I actually want to see how feasible the invisa-sniper is going to be. Lay prone somewhere cloaked. Wait for a target to present themself, uncloack, aim, kill, move, repeat.

hmm... after thinking about it, unless the mechs have some sort of Infrared vision or detector, C4ing might be the new way to anti-tank (if it's a city map and/or you can get close).

The only time I can seeing useing cloak while sitting still is so you are not spotted by a enemy gunship.
Would the cloak help against a gunship? We all know the BF2 engine doesn't show grass when you're flying above, but wouldn't the pilot still see you shadow on the ground under you?

Or will this punish all those people who play with shadows on low for purely competitive reasons. :laugh:

Heh, BF2142 for me is a must play on high game, its too pretty. Imo theres an issue with cloaking. First off it can reduce your visibilty giving you the advantage. But it might actually increase it when people just see a running shadow. People tend to either look, or not look at all... Im the one to look and immediately see a shadow walking up behind me lol. Guess you gotta hide behind a shadow of a building

I'm active on the beta testing forums and EA/DICE don't really go in there to post replies. If they are listening at all I'm sure they have 5 guys that are writing down the important things and going into the game, testing them, reproducing them properly and writing up proper bug reports. They aren't talking to us though...

I'm not sure about that one. Correct me if I'm wrong but we dont know what the full unlock "tree" is. So, there may be a really cracking unlock only available if you've unlocked x, y and z first. So, if you unlock a and b you'll then realise you actually need 4 more unlocks to get x, y, z and your preferred unlock. You may not know which unlocks you want until you've played for a while and know what class(es) you're going to settle on and by then it might be a real pain to have to rank up 4 times to get what you want.

I was able to try a field upgrade last night and I chose the active camo. Eventually the camo ran out but I didnt see any meter that tells me how much I have left. Is there a meter that I dont know about? I think you should stay invisible as long as you hold the button.

I will be getting my Voss L-AR and my lambert back as of now i have all recon all assault and all the abilities. I think i will leave out the sniper part of recon and upgrade my support alittle. I must have the abilities back though lol

Field upgrades are too easy to get when you have a reasonable squad. I managed to get 10 in 2 games lol.

A question about field unlocks: Can you unlock anything, or just the next thing up in the tree? I've only been able to get one field upgrade and the server died before I died.

I have played the BETA so I cannot elaborate on the unlock system but all I can say is that either way it really wont matter.

If you use them up front, on later in the game it really wont make a difference.

When you get the game it will have everything you need need in the BFHQ.

For example, as they stated in a article that came out around E3 you can now use your BFHQ to see what it takes to get each award and how much longer you got until you acheive it.

the way i see it is that im going for mainly COMBAT because thats the way i play games, and imo all the other medics are pretty stupid.

so im going to get the assult with the BAUR heavy assult riffle or im going to be a lot more random and away from everyone else and get the Support with the shotgun! lol, cant wait to see if that gun is any different from the shottes from bf2.

in any matter im going to try and stay from unlocks and learn the default weapons, meybe get the abuilities instead of unlocks so i wont handycap myself like i did when i played karkand mainly at the start of bf2. (im totally ABK now, anything but karkand, and have been for a while)

Doesn't matter how well you hide. I've barely ever relied on visuals to get snipers for days. Decent set of surround speakers + x-fi audio. Instantly know where a sniper is. The end.

On a whim I tried it under the EB activation section and it worked. Now the code is listed as used or invalid in the BB section whereas before it just didn't work. Yes, pre-ordered through BestBuy. BestBuy has no promo code. WHen I asked them why I wasn't given a promo code to unlock. They told me to talk to EA, give them my purchase order number.... No response from EA yet. I felt alil jipped but maybe it's just my own experience. Hey, atleast I'll get that dogtag USB flash drive.... right?....... .......hello?

I got the actual preorder box shown in the pictures, with the tags and a slip of paper with the code on it. If you didn't get a code yet, your probably won't... sounds like a rip-off. Let me know what EA tells you, just the same.

You can't look for shadows anyways, so it's a moot point; I think I can't really tell you how the cloaking works, but at close range it's easily spotted... think Metal Gear Solid.

I can only tell you that you don't unlock guns the same way you unlock in BF2.
