View Full Version : Let's clear up the removed minimap situation

1) It's unrealistic. There should be chatter between SL's and CO's identifying units. You shouldn't just be taking a pop at anything you see moving. Realism is the game.
2) The main map is still there if you hit capslock. Units are shown on that map moving. This is in Real World too, or at least for British forces.
3) The minimap is still present in v0.7 for vehicle drivers. Removing the minimap is a boon, as it does increase realism. But it is NOT removed for vehicles in the next build. This helps vehicles get around the field without running over their own troops, gives awareness of spotted enemies, etc.
You see, do you remember that little visit the PR team went on to Bovington Armoured training camp? Well, as well as a lot of other things that we learnt and have implemented ingame for realism, we were shown computer equipment with large enough displays for easy reading in the field and comes in robust casing that is fitted in all vehicles that works via a good radio system to transmit orders, movements and display the locations of all troops on the equivalent of a tight scaled OS map. In fact, the map we use ingame is simpler than the realism is, as you don't see every other squads movement paths and orders. I don't know what other forces round the world are using, but can say that the British system is very, very useful and a far cry from my time in the early nineties.
Don't fret yourself about the removal of the minimap for individual troops, but learn not to start firing rounds off at anything that moves!! Due to removing SL and vehicle spawning you could cripple your entire team tking a friendly SL who hasn't laid his RP yet!

^ That is something IMO that PR has gone to far with, for example today i watched my squad walk into a hostile RP and get butt****ed, there was no way i could tell them, i talked over voip and typed in the chat and i all got back was a angry sounding french guy....so yer i found it really hard without being able to spot anything.
I agree it may be unrealistic but i think there is only so far you can get in the bf2 engy towards realism.

Lmao, what is it with 0.7 and a sudden intake of french people.
The thing is, it'll just take getting used to. People are used to UAVs and such like, and hearing that bleep that an enemy is near.

i think the mod will loose a fair few through the last change, it's a bit of a bodged job removing the spotting facility but leaving it in the commo rose???? it will ruin team work with people who dont speak the same language..
I like where the mod has been going but some things IMO shouldn' have changed!

For spotting, use the new compass at bottom centre of your screen! Use voip and/or text and give compass direction/distance by a reference point.
If you speak english and in a squad of angry sounding french players then get out of the squad and into an english speaking one!!!! (Just remember to say goodbye to them use : "on-coo-lay fron-say")
Seriously though, you can't expect to only speak english and join a foreign server or a foreign non-english speaking squad and expect to have any fun! That was a choice you made. So find players who speak in your language and start sticking with them.

If English was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for the frenchies.
These map changes aren't bad at all, but give it 30 years and any "Project Reality" mod will fit vBF2 more.

ill quote a DEV again;
"project reality is not made for the masses"
also, about spotting, if u hear some 1 shouting look at what direction they are facing. also use the compass.

iGi is a UK based server but in the Euro zone so we get all sorts of it. Generally most people speak english. The serbs, Poles, Norwegians and Germans all speak a smattering of english thankfully. Enough to fight with, don't need more than that in a normal situation :)
Remember the compass at the bottom of the screen guys! That is your new best friend in a hurry. Some of us are starting to use it properly and it is working fine, luckily we only have 6 man squads as the constant chatter is incredible in some of our squads. Then there's TS on top! Removing Minimap and spotting has its purpose.
I remember today the response I got was pretty much instant within the squad when spotting enemy as I said "watch my tracer!" then proceeded to fire about a dozen single shots at the enemy location 250m away which everyone then saw (the tracers) and followed up with their own fire!
