View Full Version : Project Reality x1950pro stuttering?

Hi, everyone.

My computer seems to stutter every time I play Project reality 0.7. When playing, it will simply just freeze up, then unfreeze, then freeze up, then unfreeze, etc. It usually happens when a vehicle is driving. or there are friendlies nearby, or something that I'm sure would be a graphics card problem.

But still I would like others opinions on it.

My rig:

x1950pro 256mb
140gb HDD
2gb DDR2
Pentium D 930 3.00ghz
550w PSU

OS: Vista Business

I run Project Reality at 1280x1024 all high with no AA.

Most of the time it runs with good fps, up above 50, but then other times it just stutters
:(

Please help!

James

u might need more than 2gb to run PR with Vista. the stuttering is from the lack of ram.

Check your cards tempts also, it sounds like an overheating problem.

check your ram peaks with task manager, vista is a ram hog, so more ram needed for OS it will have to write more 2 the page file which definatly will slow u down.

when the "freezing" is happening, is the HD light flashing on front of your pewter? if so that is the HD searching for files from your pagefile.

with every release they allways get more "System tough" IMO and that could be why you had no probs before.

but also could be simple thing like you need to defrag, allways defrag after a installation of a game or anything you want to run fast anyway.

If you cant figure it out from those i'd try (well i try anyway ) a manuall uninstall , then reinstall, then cleanup , registry scan & fix, defrag. if that dont do it, then has to be your ram since its bottleneck in your system.

best luck dude.

Sounds like your Processor isn't fast enough (close to AMD X2 4200+ speeds), plus your Ram isn't enough for gaming in Vista. (2gigs for XP, 4gigs for Vista till after at least SP1 comes out)

PR isn't as optimised as vBF2, although some recent optimisation with V0.7 has meant improvements to many maps. But still, you might want to select medium graphics with 2x AA instead @ 1024x768 and see if that runs smoother, then start upping stuff one by one to get a balancing point.

Nooo its optimized it just has a larger GFx requirements cos of our large draw distances etc.

You have only 2GB of RAM (yes, only), I suggest you disable Superfetch and see how that goes. It should completely reduce stuttering.

Having had vista and 2GB (now 4GB) I can say it is either textures on medium with 2GB or 4GB and textures on high. Although it can still lag a tiny bit.

Well I'm getting an extra 2gb stick sometime this week so we'll see how that works, I'll also defrag it cause my PC is clogged up with crap.

Oh and camper, what do you mean by disable Superfetch?

Well I tried it with lower settings, and works well with very little stuttering and freezing, but it's still there. So I guess I'll just wait till I have 4gb of RAM before I turn up the settings a bit more.

Ok So I got 4gbs of RAM now, I haven't tested it with PR yet but I have another problem before I do that. My 4gbs of RAM on Vista shows up as 3.25gb.

Does anyone know why??!!

He probably has got 32 bit vista...

Physical RAM for 32bit Vista Business is 4gigs. The following articles/discussions will explain why you only have 3.2gigs available (doe to pci-e/virtual ram/etc issues) Due to these issues, I wonder how much of the prior 2gigs you were losing to these same things?

Meh, I'll just have to accept the limitations of 32bit Vista. Sigh.

Oh and I tested Project reality at Medium settings and it seemed to work fine, but it was on a 16 play map so I'll do more extensive testing next time.

EditL: OK, I tested it on a large map, works fine.

Manually update your PB files and clear out your BF2 cache and try again.
