View Full Version : Australia & Others Will Miss Out On Battlefield Heroes

An Australian site by the name of Kotaku (http://www.kotaku.com.au/) is reporting that certain regions of the world will not get the opportunity to play Battlefield Heroes. Take a look:
If you were looking forward to trying out DiCE's Battlefield Heroes, the free-to-play game announced by EA earlier this week, think again. EA Australia has informed us that the game will not be available to audiences outside of the US and Europe.
Which, last time I checked the atlas, included Australia.
Considering the game will be downloadable, I'm not exactly sure how the publisher will enforce this, but I'm sure it'll find a way.
EA was unable to explain why the game won't be released outside the aforementioned territories, but the words "for the moment" were tossed around, so we may see the title eventually. Just not right now.
More news as we get it, but my guess is EA wants to trial the free-to-play model before throwing it out to the world at large.
Remember, any news right now isn't final and many aspects of the game, including where it will be available, will likely change in the coming months.

Quite unfortunate that it won't be available outside the US or Europe. I wonder how they will control this, as people can lie about their place of living.

(Had to edit out some words in your original post so I wouldn't have to remove it) ;)
I know it sucks...BUT...who knows if this will even hold true by the time the game is out. And like the article says, how can they really restrict who downloads it when it is just that, a download. People can just put in fake addresses if they do it by address. So we'll see what happens and how DICE/EA responds to all of this.

As far as i understand the game in not only downloadable, but has to be launched from their website. So they could restrict it that way.
Central loginservers or maybe even gameservers will also give them control.

Hopefully if it does end up like this someone finds a work around that wont get them sued I really wanted to play this game.... lol EA just got a loss instead of a gain..... there sad
and Sorry Spawn just a little angry lol
Just to add a little bit of info Australia doesn't allow ingame ads that might be one prob even though we are getting them in 2142 no matter what and same with CS 1.6 :S

This game is already bordering on ridiculous for me.
They are giving a free game to only Europe and US, im sorry but the last time i checked, Australians and everyone outside the US and Europe payed for EA's games aswell....

Give us a free game or else..
Or else what? Drop Bear invasion? :D
Seriously, the main thing keeping Australia out of the loop may be their own legal system. It was a benefit with BF2142, but now you have to pay the price.
The argument that you pay for EA games too is really irrelevant since this is not intended as a freebie to loyal customers, but as a self-financing product.

What's this about the Australian legal system?

Australia Does not allow ingame advertising because the government sucks thats why originally we weren't going to be getting 2142 until EA annouced they will get rid of ingame ads.
But now the ads come through on 2142 which just scratches that law out but it still applies to games that are being released most likely the reason Australia is not getting it because it would not pass the the Australian gaming regs due to the ads even though they appear in 2142 and CS 1.6
But you know what EA still sucks they disobeyed the law here before why not do it again? They didn't get in trouble...

The Australian Govt. blocked all ads in BF2142.
This in turn leads to now generation of cash in that country if BF:H were to be released...
Get the vague idea?

Maybe it's the government who should be re-thinking their strategies, not EA.

no its not the Government its EA not every country has that law

Exactly what Alex means, if Australia is one of those rare countries with a weird law, they should change, not the policy of a company.

Well then i guess every government in the world other than the US and Europe have this law
I seriously hope EA change their minds about this.

Anybody in Australia that plays 2142 in Aus will confirm we get in-game ads... so either the law no longer exists or EA are breaking it. But not my point.
Vika
All the Asian counties don't have the law so why isn't gunna be released there does your country have it? Its not our government if it was we would be the only ones missing out it is in fact EA

I don't know what the motivation behind the law is, but I doubt that the government will change it just because some people want to play free online games.
As to why Asia in general is not targeted: Maybe because this is an attempt to introduce the micro-payment model to the west?

I did a bit of research, and it appears that BF2142 in Australia was target by the Spyware Act (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlefield_2142#Advertising_components), so it was not because of the advertising in itself.

well there you go its not our laws thats stopping it thank you for pointing that out So it is EA

Technically it still is, AFAIK, there wasn't any significant spyware in 2142. Its been exaggerated by the act.
Cryptik
01-24-2008, 02:59 PM
but EA/DICE Proved that 2142 did not in fact contain Spyware through ads so the same may go for BF:H
Vikaman
01-24-2008, 03:03 PM
Once again, if EA/DICE proved there is no spyware in their games, why and how can the Spyware Act stop the game from being published?
EA is probably more worried about not getting any money than risking it being played for free.
Unless the Govt. clarifies that the act will not threaten their product in any way.
Cryptik
01-24-2008, 03:09 PM
there has been no proof that it is not be published in Australia cause of that law.
And Australia still has a large gaming community plus with the gaming community's of the other countries with Australia would make around the same amount as USA
Vreki
01-24-2008, 03:12 PM
I think you are looking at this the wrong way. The game is a relatively small project, intended to test play4free and micro-payments in the west where it is a rather new concept.
So that is why they are focusing their efforts on EU and USA. At least that would make sense.

EA make sense lol... those words do not belong in the same sentence

01-24-2008, 03:38 PM
Yea sorry i might have been a apart of that. :D
Im starting to see that maybe the political laws are standing in the way of this game, but it does seem odd how every other country other than the US and Europe seem to have these laws

Still, we don't know how the servers for BF:H will operate. Will they be the same as in the other BF games, or are they making some sort of one only huge server like WoW as an example?
Could be due to such things as well.
Or it's just a bit far fetched :p
Cryptik
01-24-2008, 03:40 PM
There are no laws standing in the way of this game the laws where settle with EA/DICE aswell as other game companies thats why we have ads in CS 1.6 and 2142
