View Full Version : Somehow Crysis does not look the latest achievement in graphics

For some weird reason I find Crysis textures really ugly. Not all, but notably the indoors are just, well, plain ugly and very cartoonish.

The most gripes I have are the banana boxes. Also the island hut and barrack textures look very third rate production stuff.

The jungle is very impressive but I find the contrast of quality between indoors and outdoors very big.

For example I find HL2:Episodes much more graphically impressive than Crysis. Even the outdoors.

Does anyone else have an aesthetic problem with these? And before you jump the gun I say that I run Crysis at everything high expect object count and shadows which are in medium. I've tried them high and it's not helping.

Where the GPU power is sucked? I think it's the amount of objects.

No i agree, i think the outdoor environment is fantastic but i still prefer the overall HL looks of things as i think they pack more details in with far less GPU power.

I disagree. :p The good thing with the HL2 series though is that you don't need a monster computer to run it at the highest settings. I don't like the source engine really when it comes to HL2, makes me feel like it wants to look realistic but fails miserably. It fits with CS:S, Portal and TF2 though.

I run HL2:EP2 at 90 FPS and Crysis at ~25 FPS as an example ;)

Gun = sexy
Trees = very nice
Fence = pretty good.

Floor + Vegatables = Disgusting.

I know that probably isn't on all high, but for the GPU power it needs, HL or Fear look nicer.

On what basis you do disagree? You mean that boxes are good looking?

To my eye some of the graphics look so ugly that I seriously thought that this is a settings thing (like very scaled back texture quality) or a driver issue, but no. They are the same even with high settings. I tried to mitigate the effect somewhat by turning 2xAA ON, but no great help there.

For some reason the situation is even worse because the poor texture quality makes the edges of objects look very jaggy and noticeable. The case in point being the pic vika posted. Check the cabbages especially.

The only thing that truly look beautiful is the water effects and other game effects are well done. I'm just sad that poor textures take away value so much

In my eyes most of the textures look great if you have a good enough computer. I don't feel like playing through singleplayer again just to show screenshots though :p Perhaps you could post a screenshot?

But performance wise, HL2 wins.

I really, really need to take care of my bullsh!t detector, its howling through the roof...

If we take texture quality and the pure, rarest form of eyecandy, then the walls in SWAT4:TSS EXP pack are world class.

I dont see praise though.

Here you go. The outdoors are beautiful but indoors are pretty drab looking. Especially the banana boxes and the bananas next to it. Also the grenades when you pick reminds me of games 5 years old.

Some of the textures look very nice like the last barrel and it's outdoors, so I doesn't necessarily mean that all the textures are bad.

I cropped some of the pictures with paint unnecessarily small but it gives you the idea. And made the classic mistake saving them in jpg format so the jaggedness is smoothed out. Sorry about that.

I haven't finished the game yet, so the frozen world part is still new to me. I hope the pick up the ball there.

Sorry about the imageshack uncoolness. Anyone know a free & fast upload place?

Crysis gfx are really good. To get these special features added you have to manually add them into your config (http://www.incrysis.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=17780). They were taken out cos hardware these days can't handle it and will cause you game to go into a slideshow.

By the way looqas do you play DX9 or DX10? There's not too much of a difference but it could be good to know.

Found a few screenshots lying in my Fraps folder, I'm not completely sure if the're with all settings very high (could be just high) but AA is off at least...

Nothing wrong with the outdoors :p

Well the indoors are definately not as colorful and sparkly as the outdoors ;) You don't spend a lot of time inside these houses so I guess Crytek didn't put too much focus on them. When you get to the big *** boat (what is it called in english? lol) later on in the game the textures aren't all that fantastic but it still looks nice.

You know, I was going to go and make a screenshot of all my games and throw it out, saying- "each of them should have been graphically revolutionary, and look how bad they are". But really, Im not that anal. Did you expect Crysis to deliver lifelike graphics? The graphics are already absolutely magnificent, and because of the large scale of the game, even more admirable.

Trevott, with my rig, can i get those grfx in ur pcs, also what the approx FPS u get?

I think its a case of trial and error although your system is slightly faster to mine (bar less 2GB RAM) there is always the case it may not perform as well. Firstly make sure you have the latest nvidia (http://www.nvidia.com/object/windows_vista_hotfixes.html) & vista (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/browse.aspx?displaylang=en&productID=8D7DD8D7-1CA6-4632-BAEF-E7C0750ED02E) hotfixes then get the latest mobo drivers, sound & gfx drivers and try the config.

I cannot say what fps i was getting but it felt smooth, smooth enough to play @ 1280x1024.

Those custom settings blow me away. I'm definitely gonna have to try those out. And please people when you say HIGH settings I interpret that as High not Very High. And thats how it should be interpretated.

Spoilers ahead:

After turning everything very high (except object quality) in DX10 mode the game started looking good. I had to scale down to 1024x786.

Oddly enough the best piece of graphics in my opinion was the very,very good and real looking sea and the waves in it during the carrier levels. Especially awesome sea vista was when the big monster sinks the destroyer next to you and you get to watch. I just had to take a couple of minutes and stare at it.

I am not impressed with the graphics at all. I have to run everything on low settings. BF2142 looks better than this. I refuse to upgrade to vista just to use dx10, not that it means much but my system works great with XP on all other games. Ram and hard drive space is not a problem and it is not my ATI graphics card either. I am not about to upgrade all of my hardware or buy a new system just to run vista.

You can't really say you aren't impressed by the graphics if you don't play it maxed out. Just my opinion. If you play it maxed and don't like em well thats beyond me but I've got nothing against you.

the only difference I notice in the "ultra high" quality screenshot is the HDR and bloom, nothing else seems to have changed. it makes a big difference, but the graphics (like textures and shaders) are still the same, just different lighting.

I think it might be too bright to go out of the forest, though

You need glasses.

You can't honestly think the BF2142 GFX Are better than what Crysis has.

tbh the difference between dx9 and dx10 in terms of some of the visual perks, espcially on high is hard to notice, hell most people wont see it at all

but imo it looks better

There is a difference in DX10 and DX9 but it can be hard to notice when looking at just screenshots. If you actually try to play with both you will feel the difference :)

Yes, you feel it mostly in effects like explosions, motion blur etc...
