A very well known modder, Requiem, is back today with a new article about what we should know about modding for Battlefield 3. Check it out:
Many of you have probably seen the Battlefield 3 Screenshots floating around the net and they definitely look up to par with today’s technology. A lot more freedom is made available through increased use of indoor environments as well as destructible assets. With what seems to be the theme title, Battlefield: Bad Company or for us just BF3, the game will also once again open up the modding circuit for various willing teams. Although this is a great opportunity to work with a fresh engine within a successful franchise, there are a couple of items Mod Teams must be aware of before embarking on this long crusade.
Official Support
From our experiences as the most played Battlefield 2 mod (Project Reality), the support from the publisher (Electronic Arts) and the studio (DICE – Digital Illusions CE) has left a lot to be desired. We did receive some free BF2 copies and were very thankful to have been invited to the Mod Day in the UK, but these are all items which just barely touch the surface of the work we do. From updated mod tools to newsletter mentions, or infrastructure support, it’s all been non-existent during the life of BF2. Small efforts from the publisher such as a link from an article on the official page would have produced stunning results, but alas being the most played mod only gets us 2-3% of the online player population for BF2. So you can imagine what it’s like to be part of an average sized-mod. Unless you’re one of the top three, you’ll hardly have any player momentum which will ultimately lead to a flat player population soon after release.

I think he means Bad Company screenshots. That and BF3 will both run on the Frostbite engine.

Well, to my knowledge, there has been no official BF3 announcement, So lets no jump to conclusions about Bad company being BF3.

We've already learned from some EA earnings stuff that Bad Company, Heroes, and "Another unnamed Battlefield project" are planned for 2008, so I doubt BC is BF3.

well, since the AI devs have left dice (I know that one is now at pandemic) there is very little chance of BF3 having descent AI (eg Coop MP is 99% NOT going to appear, and the maps (from what I have seen) are smaller, not bigger than BF2.
this leads me to me overwhelmingly unimpressed about this new engine.
If there is a lack of SP & Coop love for the offliners then there will be no AIX in BF3's future.
Coop gaming ftw, forcing people to play online only (to me) = epic fail

Bad Company is not BF3 and BF Heroes is not BF3. But this article is misleading because in the article he treats Bad Company as BF3, which it is not.

Regardless of which BF iteration it's going to be. His points will apply to all of them, nonetheless.
Brilliant writeup Req!

Sure, it's out of date with regards to PR's latest version, but you've had a prime spot on the official website for over six months.

that is tbh nothing like they said they where going to do with updating the ingame "Message from EA" about new mod releases and showcasing mods like they did once for OPK and the amount of players who tried it after that shot up! If EA/DICE did that for every mod, there would probably be 5x the amount of players playing mods or at least trying them.
I think more people check TotalBF2 than the EA site tbh...

wow, one mod.....
But requiem is right. It´s equal how it is named. It will happen to the next "real" battlefield.
# And yes, there will be a BF3. That´s no secret. And BF:BC will be for console only.
BF:H is an experiment, to test how to melk the cashcow... All the 12-14 years old kids. BF:H will be rated 12+. Wow.
And atm BF is loosing his "moddingsbrain". All these guys are leaving who worked years on this engine. ;)

What is the point of this post?
It told us nothing new. All modders have been disgruntled with mod support for a long time and never expected anything anyway so why is this news? lol...

This is about community awareness. More people read these forums than the official EA forums no doubt. The more information out there, the better the community is aware of issues.
Gone are the days of selling on games, before the advent of the internetz, this is the future and we must play by its rules. Now, how do we make all vBF2 players aware of the mods again? Maybe you can answer that.

There are a lot of rumors flying around, but choose not to believe anything until EA or DICE confirm anything.

This is merely a cry for attention from PR. If they "only" get 2-3% of the BF2 gamers it is because of the stats-system and the fact that not everyone loves PR as much as they think.

lol, PR has by far the most players out of any other BF2 mod, which really should not be the case.
Any BF2 modder, being if they are PR or not will tell you the same thing as this post here says, ask the POE2 gues, ask the FH2 guys, as the BF:P2 guys, anyone!
Req hardly dose anything for PR these days, hes working on many other projects and handed over the leadership of PR over years ago now...
you really need to get your facts strait.

Well first of all, I frankly don't give a rat's a55 to what you and all the cool modders do, because I frankly don't play any mods except AIX in singleplayer. And I am only basing my facts on the fact that requiem was a PR modder, regardless of whether he is still working for it or not. As mentioned before, I just don't care.

I did not get that. What do you mean? "Should it not" be the case that PR gets most BF2 players out of any mods? You're contradicting yourself a lot here.

It should not be the case that PR has the most players since PR was never made for the masses, FH2 and POE2 are easily more appealing to the average vbf2 player but they miss one critical thing, "Official Ranks" which is why they are hardly played, like so many other BF2 mods.
If you "just don't care" then why do you bother reply to this topic in the first place? the fact is that you in some way envy PR for w/e reason I dont really know but you obviously have something against PR, and maybe other BF2 mods it sounds like.

The only thing that bothers me with PR is really that loads of people advertise about PR, constantly seeking attention, often in the wrong forums / sections of TGN.
Overall, PR is a good mod for people who can't stand fast-paced games, want to wait and want to walk a lot. Really, I thought only WoW could satisfy people like that, but PR has done a great job in filling that spot.
I hope that in the future either WoW or PR will continue to attract players, so the real battlefield can be kept from that kind of people.

I cant help what the players of our mod, I bet many BF2 players do it to other game forums ;)
Also I can stand fast paced games, I use to play a lot of BF2 before I got into PR, played it solid for afew years with my clan before getting tired of mainly things like the C4 tossing etc. I also have UT3 installed on my HDD at the mo which is even more fast paced than BF2, thou only have a game on it now and then, mainly got it cos of its editor, wanted to check it out etc. Also play alot of Supreme Commander, although a RTS its pretty fast paced. Aint played WoW so cant speak for that, I'm not much of a RPG player myself.
PR is not for thous, as you put it "can't stand fast-paced games", its for thous who like what we offer in a game, which is a realistic tactical shooter that requires a lot of teamwork :)
So yes, really can you again back up what you say with facts...

How do you expect people who play the game to get it out there so we can fill our servers?
You're one angry little man hey................
