Ever thought, all the effort you put into this game. Ranking, and medals, and the pain we all went through to get where your at. One day, you do not play anymore, due to changes in your life. Then later (10 years from now) your able to relax, and reinstall BF2142, wondering if your stats will still be up. And continue where you left off. Will we be able to log in? Or servers now longer exist. Any thing no longer exists. Also, the unlocks, how would you get them? Could this happen? I understand the moved on to other games, or something more enjoyable. But just think about this one.

I don't know that it will matter in 10 years,as computing power will be ridiculous and better games will be out. XP and Vista will not be supported, so things will be much different in 10 years. A lot can happen in 10 years, as the computer you are typing this on right now will be a big paper weight by then.

You don't honestly play the game to get medals with the idea that in the future you can show them off do you?
Seriously, by the time BF3 is out, most people will move on, forget 2142/bf2 and use the stats system in the new game.

No, I do not show them off. But the effort in trying to get em, to gain rank. C'mon, who cares what I have, but only me. That is a lot of work. That is not what I am writing about. I am writing about 10 years from now, if you like to play BF2142, and load it up into a system you have now. Not the system you have then. Just to say, curious if all will be available then, or not. What are you going to do with the game? Throw it away? Like others?

To be honest, I'd doubt if the current server system is still functional in 10 years. There is a possibility that there are unranked servers still though.
Although I wouldn't be surprised if they've done a 2142 v2 in 10 years. Battlefield 2142 with destructible environments and crysis-style graphics... man that would be so sweet.

The other night, I thought about this. Wondering if all this is going to be around in 10 years. If I would like to reinstall the game, and later finding out, unable to log in, and other issues. We all know, their will be new gaming, and OS. But my gaming is coming to an end, but just the thought of returning.

CS 1.6 is still about - and that's based on the Half-Life engine from 1998. So maybe? I doubt that the BF series has had the same impact as CS has on the gaming industry though.

Well, I guess you just have to play for today.
Honestly, 10 years from now, I doubt I'll give it a second thought.
One thing I will say is I doubt I could pwn in 10 years. Skills would suffer a bit.
Go back and try to play BF1942 and you'll see how hard the aiming is now. At the time, it seemed easy.
Besides if you don't play for too long, your account atrophies or petrifies, like the "memory of a voyage".

i didnt play during the summer really and i had to play on my account for a bit to get my name back on the leaderboard where it should be like it dissappears or something and then gets reactivated idk. I have played cs 1.6 a bit and wasnt that bad, played CoD4 for about 4 months when it came out and it was really cool but this game is without a doubt my favorite fps im kind of new to the whole fps thing but still this game imo is very satisfying for a number of reasons that the other games dont have
i hope alot of people stay interested in this game for a while because at this point i cant see myself getting bored yet. The fact that other people are playing and slowly getting better is part of my motivation to keep playing because more people become experienced and the game gets more interesting as time goes on because its not the maps or the weapons or features of the game (nice as they are) its your performance compared to others and the other people that make the game interesting.
10 years is a long time though realisticly i'd be really surprised if im still playing this game more than a year from now caus like some other guy said tech is advancing, better games are coming out and im getting a job soon so i'll probly have a better comp later and if this game is anything like BF3 i'll probly be playing BF3 caus the player population from bf2142 would dissappear. but im just going to play the funnest game (with a leaderboard i kind of like the leaderboard thing) and if there isnt anything funner than this game i'll play this game

I think BF 2142 will be around in some forum, but just called something different and the graphics and effects will make this look like an arcade game.

I have to disagree sir. We of the 'advanced' age in the gaming community are seeing the real evolution of computer gaming. Sure, you have 7 years on me, but I'd say your gaming is ending only if you choose to let it end.
No, I don't think in 10 years servers will be running 2142, or at least not many at all. But I have to ask... Do you remember Pong? Wasn't that a blast to play? How about when Space Invaders came out? Or Pac-Man? That was a huge leap in technology. I guess what I'm saying is that we grew up in the whole evolution of computer/electronic gaming. Compare what we grew up on to 2142. A 3D 360 degree map based semi-realistic FPS game. It still blows me away sometimes. (At which point I'm promptly killed by a knife wielding noob)

Technological development, especially in gaming, is exponential in nature. Hell, it took a couple thousand years to go from the wheel to automobiles, but significantly less than that to from the automobile into space. It took almost 50 years to go from the Turing machine to the Commodore 64, but only 20 or so to go from that to BF2142.
Frankly, computer gaming may well change so much in the next 10 years that we will no longer recognize it at that time.

Meet too. In between pissing my kecks for the third time that day and wearing a lovely multi-coloured cardigan - I still hope I've got enough dexterity to click the right buttons and hear "Frag out!" in the background. :p

I think us "old timers" on this forum need to make agreement that 50 years from now when we're all in the old folks' home, one of us will set up a server (if we remember how) just to play 2142. :D
Can't you just see the rounds now?
We won't have the dexterity to aim anymore, so all fights will be with pistols and take about a minute and a half to finish. Transport pilots will fall asleep at the wheel and crash into the enemy Titan. FAV drivers will refuse to go over 5 MPH. A loaded APC will find itself way off in a corner of the map because no one knew where the hell they were headed.
OK, come to think of it now, maybe there is an age we should call it quits when it comes to gaming.

FPMSL!!!!
You forgot to mention the APC with the in-built toilet. How the hell can you expect to travel across the map to the other titan, without at least one pee-break?
Not forgetting the fact that our eyesight will be so bad by then, we won't be able to see if the titan shield is down or not. Just head to that blob floating in the sky..... it'll be alright. ;)

In 10 years, I will be happy to say I didn't fret over ranks, medals, and what not. I can say that I just had a **** ton of fun and enjoyed the game.
