....well, that was interesting! Having got the Brig. Gen. rank with my main soldier, I thought I'd have a dabble with a brand new soldier.
Bloody hell - did we all actually start our 2142 days like this?! As I've said in other posts, I'm a total n00b at sniping - so where better to begin a new soldier?
Ended up on an assault lines Highway Tampa map as EU and settled down to looking over a capture point. Sure enough, two tanks were on their way and I called them out as spotted. Without thinking, I was reaching for the Pilum and getting ready for the shot......... except this time I only had a Park 52 rifle, pistol and knife. Sh1t.
I was such a distance from the AT turret, that that was out of the question. All I could do was cover the flag on the off-chance that one of the tank crew jumped and made some repairs - or tried to capture the point on foot. Sure enough, our air cover had listened to my 'spotted' comments and started to cause some havoc amongst the armour.
In a few moments some of my guys were there as were quite a few PAC. I tried to put into practice what I've read on here - wait until the target is walking too or away from you before taking the shot. I managed to get three of them in due course (none with a single headshot though) before a PAC APC spotted me on the rafters and nailed me almost straight-away.
I respawned at the only point we had left - that one to the extreme lower left - across the bridge, where the rest of the EU were making their last stand. Against three tanks and a walker, we were really struggling and were literally just prolonging the inevitable. I continued firing shots at these guys on foot and even had a quick go in the walker that respawned behind us.
I finished the round on 13-5 k/d - which I didn't think was bad for a completely unlock-free kit. But more importantly, it was bloody good fun. I could only sprint like someone who chain-smoked and had a mere three weapons to pick from. I didn't even have the benefit of the NetBat kit - it really was back-at-boot-camp stuff.
I love the unlocks - I think they are part of what makes 2142 imo. But every now and then, I'll go back to my new soldier. It makes for a totally different gaming experience. I'm still finding it hard to believe that this was where we all were back in 2006. :)
