Anyone else put off by the lack of real jets?

Im not saying that because I'm going to miss plane whoring, but because it took away a fun part of the game :( Just flying, doing stunts, dog fighting, parachuting from high up, that's all pretty much gone with these helicopter hybrids. No more cool manuevers, no more use of my joystick :(
They could have nerfed jets but left them in there =/
It feels a bit empty without jets. No more "Oh **** a Su-37 is coming, hide #$#$!" :(
It's not scary to be on the ground anymore. No need to constantly watch the skies.

I won't miss jets at all. I started playing mostly SF just to get away from them. In concept, they were a great addition to BF2. As usual though, the implementation left much to be desired. Really three things ruined jets for me:

1.) The gross imbalance between the J10 and F35. If both planes were more or less even, I think many of the other jet related problems would have resolved themselves.

2.) Lack of effective AA. This meant that a good jet pilot had little to fear except a superior pilot on the other team. It also made for very frustrated ground pounders with no recourse against these flying monsters. People felt the same way about choppers until folks started using the .50 cals effectively.

3.) The mass area destruction potential of the bombers. This too wasn't in itself bad, but combined with 1 and 2, it was the icing on the cake. Even a simple reload nerf that required the pilot make a couple more passes over the airfield, or land to rearm would have solved this.

All in all, maps with jets just weren't fun, and I play games for fun.

yeah I agree. Boy am I glad the jet whores are out of the picture. I dont mean to be rude but jet whoring was extremely frustrating and in my opinion it took away from the gameplay.

Yeah it certainly doesn't feel right, and i feel that BF has lost a part of what made it what it was by ditching the jets... however they were just imbalanced, If they were put in 2142 they'd just be useless or overpowered. I think its safer not putting them in and that way nobody can whine about them being this that or the other.

I think Dice has taken the easy way out of this and I feel slightly cheated that they came up with the Gunship as the only comprimise... but its their game and i prefered ground pounding any day. As a whole though, i still believe this game better then BF2 and i think i'm going to enjoy it a great deal, jets or no jets.

I enjoyed flying from time to time in BF2, but I am NOT upset about the lack of "jets" in 2142.

There are a lot of characteristics that make the 2142 gunships similar to the old BF2 jets:

-You can still fly at a high rate of speed: not as fast as BF2 fighters, but closer to the speed of the Armored Fury planes
-You can still have enjoyable dogfights with enemy gunships
-Missles still lock on to enemy aircraft. It might not be the same type of lock on from BF2, but this time it takes a bit more skill which lengthens the duration of dogfights
-AA and A2A fire can be avoided by using the Active Defense shields, which works similar to the flares in BF2 but much more effective
-Gunships are still very effective against any type of enemy unit: infantry, armored, and airborne...just like BF2 jets
-A decent pilot can expect a 20:1 kill death ratio in gunships which is close to a decent BF2 pilot ratio

..and this is not to mention that at any time a pilot can transition to a "helicopter" style of play, hovering around slowly and killing enemies. The biggest difference now with 2142 is that it will take slightly more than a random noob with a bomber to rack up kills. So all around, I won't be missing the "jet" very much. I'm very pleased with how well the 2142 gunship takes both the roles of the BF2 helo and jet.

In my experience in the beta, flack gun fire went right through AD, i tested it several times. Gunship AD was only useful for rockets or tank shots etc and ofc another gunship.

I think he means by strafing gunships, they do make mince meat out of tanks/apcs that aren't on the ball so to speak with their Active defence.

That tv guided missile was impossible to aim with xD. I almost never used it.

you wanna "bomb" targets, move the titan over to an enemy base and use the ground pound turrets. damn things launch 15-20 BF2 Artillery shells, with BF2 Artillery spread, takes 5 seconds to reload, and there's 4 guns! shoot a base with 10 guys in it, you're guaranteed 8 no problem.

Cant say I'll miss the jet's, 140 hours on Wake in Bf2 as mainly USMC has left a sour taste in my mouth when it comes to them.
The air power in the beta was balanced belive it or not, though their handleing could be better. I jumped on an empty server and tried to do some stunts, no rolls, no flips and very hard to control in beta 2.
(I was playin with 280 ping so that may have been a problem)

2142 seems to promote Inf combat over all TBH, which as a ground pounder, I cant thank them eough.

As for bombers, well use the titan.

I think that jets would be fine aslong as you had to land to reload and there was a accurate AA launcher as a high level unlock.
I really dislike the fact that you cant do tricks like flips and rolls with the VTOL's.

I'm glad they actually got rid of jets; can really ruin your day in a BF2 game. That's what has really made me interested in 2142. No longer, do you have vehicles that can dominate the game. I have heard that the Talon and Doragon have gotten their agility boosted; so it might make taking them down harder.

I think that Jets are a good thing on the battlefield.. As long as the developer makes them well.

If you had to do everythign that real pilots had to do and make flying harder than it was in bf2, so only the truelly skilled can use planes effectively then I think that it would make the game better.

There is so many people that played mostly in the jets in BF2, but will be unable to in 2142, sure there are gunships but thats like trying to drive a bus around a Formula 1 track. If planes where left in BF2142 then sure some people might be a bit dissapointed, but they have been taken out and I am sure there are a lot of people that are dissapointed, to a point where they wont play the game (hardly at all).

Luckily I also love being a sniper (recon) so I'm set.

Hmm, I disagree that the jets were annoying in bf2.
It wasn't the jets, it was our defenses.
When a jet came for your spawn point, you were pretty much dead, unless you could run to cover real fast. Only after the first pass could you try and lock on to it with AA weapons. However, if the pilot was any good, he'd have destroyed them.
It's quite similar to enemy infantry being invisible until they start shooting at you, and somehow your weapon is empty the instant they do...it just sux.

Also, I loved toying with the helicopters, so jets were a major nuisance to me when flying. At least in a helicopter I had a weapon to take them out. (which I did often:p There's nothing like a jetwhore's reaction to receiving a TV missile in his face;) )

So no, I won't miss them. But it might be a slightly bad thing that one of the factors of the game has just been taken out completely. Sure, the gunships are fine with me (as long as I can solo pilot;) ), but they don't offer the same flexibility that helo's and planes did.

From another angle, it's only logical to take jets out. Some 150 years into the future, do you really think we'd even HAVE jets anymore? The hybrids are far more logical future-wise. (I don't know if that's a word though^^)

On more than one occasion on the carrier I'd see a jet coming striaght for me while I was in the Phalanz I'd start pounding away with guns and rockets but he would still get me 4 time outa 5

Won't miss the jets one bit, in all my playing time I have spent less than 10minutes in jets for a few reasons.

1) I'm crap at flying them.
2) The gang of players waiting for them to spawn is resources better used elsewhere to help team win.
3) I prefer being a ground pounder.

Sorry for you guys who are good at flying and enjoy them but personally I'm more than happy that they wont be there in 2142

Man that is the truth. The EU L5 walker has some especially nasty cannons with a VERY distinct firing sound. The new titan training video intro has an L5 firing briefly. I cringed slightly the first time I watched the video and heard those guns again. If you have ever watched Saving Private Ryan and seen the germans using that towed 20mm cannon...well put two of those on a walking tower of metal and you may just wish it was only a jet hunting you.

I am split both ways, I am by no mean a great jet piolet, however my brother was and jumping in the SU37 w/ him was great. He flys and I bomb. But I agree , in the future , why have jets. I also loved the chopper.

As long as ground defence is up to par it should be an even match between ground and air

The jets in BF2 were impossible to fly. They were not responsive at all. The new vehicles in BF2142 are nice and easy to fly and I actually ENJOY using them.

That said I am glad that they are gone. However I wish that there were more air vehicles. Maybe we will get more air vehicles in future Expansions.

the jets are what has kept me comming back to BF,,,,, from 1942 to present day.... its something that in real life ill never get to do and personaly i love flying the jets..... its what brought alot of people to BF. now granted you got your flyers then you have your pilots....... ima gona miss them but it wont turn me away,,, i can always go back to BF2 when i feel like flyin :) the dog fighting waz great, hopefuly in their next game they'll bring them back even better and stonger then BF2,,, Stealth BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! stealth bombers,, stealth fighters and nuclear payloads :) :P :) :P
