View Full Version : What Made This Game so Special?

(Woopee first post) I always wanted to know what aspects of this game people really liked. I only played it a few times a couple months ago. I know its pretty much impossible to like if I got into it that late. But still, I have been wondering. I find the interface a bit sloppy and very shaky. And whats up with that scooter? I couldn't drive that thing to save my life.

lol that scooter was crazy. I'm not sure what made it particularly special but I know I always enjoyed flying the Huey around nice and low.

One thing...the atmosphere. Real battles about the vietnam war, with it's great visuals and the radio of the 60s/70s.

You really got me...

BF:V was really fun after BF1942. As already mentioned, the music was very effective in setting the mood. It felt like I was playing one of the numerous movies I'd watched. I loved me to get some LAW action, too. I miss that little missile tube.

what was fun was using the chopper to carry the portable spawn box out of bounds somewhere and leave it there. :D

Lols! I had forgotten about that box! :D That was simply awesome!

Also it was fun that you could drop boats from heli at insane heights into the water without them being damaged.

The best part about BFV was that the foliage didn't render 10 feet in front of you. :D Also, the shrubs and grasses were more varied. In BF2 they had one 2-D grass texture that they used about 10,000,000 times per map. Couldn't they have at least changed the color a bit and had several?

So...How come we dont play BFV then ? lol

Come on TGN. Let's get a vanilla server for Vietnam, too! It would be cool to have a place to call our own.

Imagine...

Monday: Total Battlefield 1942 meet-and-game night
Tuesday: Total Battlefield Vietnam meet-and-game night
Wednesday: Total Battlefield 2 meet-and-game night
Thursday: Total Battlefield 2142 meet-and-game night
Friday: Total Battlefield CoD4 meet-and-game night
Saturday: Total Battlefield 2 meet-and-game night
Sunday: Total Battlefield 2142 meet-and-game night

Let's hear your input.

It would be great, but I don't think we'd ever get enough participation (look at the TBF2/CoD server). I've tried to get people motivated on the COD server and it just doesn't work :(

**Maybe change friday night to karaoke night? :P
We used to do that in our CSS server... tons of fun on VoIP. That and poem night.

The atmosphere, helicopters and being able to play music from your vehicles. If only they had fixed the aircraft balance, it would probably be my favourite battlefield game =P

I absolutely loved the music.

I remember asking about getting the same in BF2, but, apparently using real Arabic music can be controversial since it is usually prayers sung from the Qu'ran and it can cause offence.

So, i don't think it would be possible in BF2.

getting a vietnam server would be good.it would be a nice change from the bots who fly the cobra when your gunner off the map boundry

I never got into it. I got it as part of a war chest with 1942 and played 1942 to death. I tried Vietnam, but never liked it. Then BF2 came out and I went to that, then 2142.

This game is really for people that are playing for fun, rather than shouting on everybody if one little edge is unbalanced...but that made it for me, one side always had to put in a little more effort to win a map.

Idaeus
04-16-2008, 02:01 PM
Yeah the only thing I would have to complain about BFV would be the bots that seemed to spawn in the planes so you never had the tiniest chance to take it. And then ofc they refused to jump out... /facepalm

Well there aren't too many players but imo it's the best MP Vietnam game there is... If you have money to spare, sure why not.

I can't think of another Vietnam MP game actually...

I just think something along those lines would be sweet! We'd meet to play different games each night... But, alas, I'm not one to be able to do such a thing myself.

We need a sponsor!

tunnel/shovel kit was awesome. pungi sticks, mortar, and scooter were badass too. the AA rocket worked pretty good, not like the POS SAAW.

i remember it was so unbalanced before any patches. the LMG/LAW kit owned so hard it was ridiculous. but then the radio used to cause CTD before patches.

but again, the tunnel/shovel kit was my favorite thing to use. i used to love sneaking to the enemy base and creating a spawn point nearby and just wasting all the spawning enemies.

it was a special game in its own right. plus it was the last BF game before persistent stat tracking took over and totally changed the BF experience. now it's all about points, awards, k/d, whereas before it was more about having fun. sigh... the good old days...

It was also the last BF to not have UAV and other detection devices and an all-seeing-eye commander. It was fun running through the big valley of Ia Drang trying to get your tunnel spawn to the US main while sticking to the forest for cover from enemy birds. Now imagine if there was a commander to spot you all out long before you even got there - you'd be heli food. Sometimes I miss the absence of commanders and detection devices. It takes away a whole aspect of the game. =/

haha so true. even w/o the commanders i got shot down a lot by birds riding my scooter up and down the valley trying to reach the US base. the journey was the fun part, it was so gut wrenching trying to get to the other side of the map on your piece of crap scooter.:D

It was special, because it had diversity. As has been said before, things were not always balanced, which kept it interesting.

I mean, in BF2, look at Oman, for example. One Blackhawk, one Mi-17. One Cobra, one Havok. One MiG-29, one Su-34, two F-35s. No big difference there, eh? In Vietnam, it was one Mi-8 against two Cobras, two Hueys. The Mi-8 wasn't even armed.

In one map, there are two A-1 Skyraiders, one Loach and one Huey. Only thing there was to counterbalance this, was the SA-7 Grail, which seldom shot down anything..

But, the fun side to playing as Viet-Kong, was all the equipment you had available..

Mobile spawn points..pungee sticks..dynamite..SA-7 Grail. You also had >logs< which you could roll down a hill towards the US.

BF2, REALLY took the series in a 'balanced' direction. Which is fine, but DICE really balanced things too much (no, the J-10 being overpowered was not intentional, its DICE's own incompetence..or EA taking them over, and pushing DICE away from supporting the community?).

Too much balance, and the game just gets boring. After a while, you have done everything..and there is nothing else to do, except mindlessly frag..

I loved the dense jungles, napalm, Huey's, Chinook's etc etc.

I also liked how you could taunt.

Who would that offend?!Nobody, its just an excuse to keep peace at max with uneasy countries, same thing with Ocarina of Time for the 64, they quit making carts with muslim chants in the fire temple.
