View Full Version : @DICE - Is this a joke? (performance)

Really,
I thought it couldn't get any worse than BF SF.
But this game is a joke in terms of performance.
Titan, 48 ppl. on the server.
Ping 30-40.
Settings medium.
1024x768 4xaa
768 DSL fastpath
Specs. P4 3.2 | 2 GB PC 3200 | GF 7800 GS OC 256 MB | SB Audigy2ZS
Now watch this (http://www.step2ice.com/vids/bf2142.avi)
Sorry guys but this is no demo, this is a nightmare.
And considering that this is the third game with that engine I really have to wonder who does the coding at DICE.
What have you done after the 1.03 patch?
Since then the engine is screwed.
Might have been because you were using fraps at the same time

That problem looks very similar to the Beta 1.4, when people couldnt sprint, jump or crouch. This issue may be stuck with us for a while since BF 2142 has already gone gold.
Might have been because you were using fraps at the same time
He has 2 gig of ram. No way is fraps going to hit that hard. Also, notice at the bottom right the sprint meter disappears.

the performance of this demo is even better than the previous beta versions. I have a pc with slightly lesser specs and its running smooth as butter. I have even used Fraps with no issues.

Like that 4x AA isn't hitting the engine hard. AA is a huge downgrader of performance; specially in a game that is in itself a resource hog.

I have a little bit system then him, with 2 gigs and fraps takes a toll on my computer.

LOL, if this was april the 1st id be sure it was a joke.
Fraps messes with my fps too, cuts it in half. Unless you have a very powerful PC you're going to need to reduce your gfx settings to a slightly lower level to play Titan mode, they wont admit it but it does need this. I need to play Titan mode in low instead of medium if i want as high fps as conquest mode gives me.
ofc the 4x aa doesn't help with this at all, tbh i dont see why people need aa... its nice and all but its easy to drop for performance.

Heres what I did and I EASILY got 10 fps more, sometimes 25fps more. Put dynamic lights to low, that simple. It doesnt really take away from the graphics either.

Although I find this demo to be rather poorly delivered; I've had no problems with performance.
I have noticed the lag is a little higher than satisfactory, however.

hmm
it must be the server couse when i go on internode servers, i tend to get alot of CTD's, when i play on Xtra servers, i get performence lag alot, but GameArena is just fine

I agree, dynamic lighting is one of those settings that will increase your preformance, with out taking from the games gfx

I'm getting a few FPS drop compared to BF2, but the game has different particle effects, lighting and so forth so I expect it.
With the following rig I'm getting 60-80FPS constant at all graphics max'd out and 2xAA.
AMD 3000+ @ 2.3ghz
2gigs pc3200
7800GT EVGA CO SE
When I run FRAPS that drops to 40ish. So using FRAPS is not a valid way to show your FPS since all it already cuts it nearly in 1/2 sometimes.
Take some screenshots with the FPS readout on just normal (non-fraps, just the drawfps command, i think its drawfps)

What he's experiencing is what happens when the titans are moving. You get 30+ people on a server and the commanders start moving the titans to the middle. Screws it up everytime.

I've got video of playing the entire round when I first started playing the demo and it didn't hit me like that when the titans were moving. I was playing on the WAR IS HELL 64man server.
I'll snap a few clips of it when I get home and upload them (still in .avi)

Dude something is wrong with your hardware its not the demo by far.
I have a 9800 pro with 1 gig ram, and I run titan mode alright on medium/low. With no AA. And higher resolution. With no lags. mY dynamics are off. Who cares if you can see a moving shadow or not....
4x aa is only for the higher cards. Up your resolution a notch and reduce your AA. Also you prolly need to upgrade your drivers.

Ok to clear the fraps related stuff.
Fraps uses exactly 4-5fps.
So what you see in the video is about 11 fps with and it would be 16 without Fraps.
I just played conquest mode on a elliot Ness (or so) server.
There were 40 ppl. around and the game was much better.
Bout 20-30 fps.
Still a little jerky when flying a hovership but not as bad as it was in SF where you would lag like hell with 5 fps on most maps when flying a chopper.
Anyway, as soon as I play a Titan map the whole game jerks around at 15 fps.
And when on the Titan it lags and gets choppy like there is no tomorrow.
Kinda reminds me of the Iron Gator map from SF.
The game itself is fun although a little too much from BF2 in it.
But the performance is unacceptable.
If you dare you can see how much "fun" the Titan (http://www.step2ice.com/vids/bf2142_3.avi) is.
I've done all the tweaking from part 2.
Like clearing the shaders, disabling Vsync (yeah it sux) but this game just won't run playable.
And for the 4xAA thing.
It really doesn't make any difference on my card.
It actually is the strongest part in my system.
But I tried lowering stuff anyway, no difference.
[EDIT]
@Desertfox
Heres what I did and I EASILY got 10 fps more, sometimes 25fps more. Put dynamic lights to low, that simple. It doesnt really take away from the graphics either.
Thx, I will try that.
Although low settings with my card feel a little outta place.
The way it's meant to be played. :)
UnrealAlex
10-08-2006, 03:03 AM
Dude 7800GS isnt even a high end card anymore. Its just high. So don't be afraid to lower the settings a bit.
And yes 4xAA makes a difference with any card. You dont even need 4xaa. Put a higher res and 2x aa. Those cards arent meant to run on small resolutions.
If you tried lowering stuff and theres no difference, its not the game, its you buddy, Fix your drivers.
And run renderer.drawfps 1 instead of fraps.

the titan is like the wasp from SF(SOMETIMES)
Ive got a fairly crappy computer, I run everything on low with 70 view distance but I still get on average 25fps on the ground(mind you thats really good for me)
The strange thing is that sometimes I don't get lag inside the titan, but than sometimes I do, its random and doesn't seem to change with the number of people on the server(happens with 5 people on the server as it does with 45)
Its a shame because the game is pretty fun (when I can play it:rolleyes: )

10-08-2006, 03:13 AM
Fix your drivers.
Yeah, sure.
But what can you do besides windows update, newest soundcard and vidcard drivers.
I mean I just played some Company of Heroes recently.
That game runs fine on mid to high settings and many ppl. complain it would be a system hog.
Or like say DoW, HL2 etc.
I mean it's really just this game which plays so completely bad.
If there only would be a single player level in it I could check if it's the servers or netcode.
But as it is now I can only judge from the multiplayer demo and there it's awful. :|:
I would say let's give the retail a try but 50 bucks and the very bad memories of BF Special Forces just don't allow me that.
But thanks for all your tips and help.

Fraps uses exactly 4-5fps.

Something else has to be going on man. Really. Here's a video file I took. All settings are at MAX and I have 2xAA enabled. Resolution is 1024x768 and this is all on my 3000+, 7800GT and 2gigs of memory in TITAN mode. There are 61 people playing in this game when the video was taken and the enemy titan had been moving for a while, and ours had started to move about 30 seconds before I started the clip. I got the exact # of players because about a min after this clip I died and when I brought up my screen it was 30v31 (paused to check).
You'll notice that even with FRAPS running at FULL QUALITY mode (full 1024x768 video) my FPS is pretty damn smooth.
My videocard drivers are NVIDIA's newest, and I'm running WinXP MCE 2005 (aka XP Pro media center edition).
Video file link below: Right click. Save As. Sorry its a bit large (27megs) but I didn't have time to convert it to DIVX and I wanted it to be at least 640x480 so it was at least semi clear playback.

I got XP Professional but that can't be the reason.
What is you inet connection?
GHTP Dave
10-08-2006, 03:36 AM
MCE is just XP Pro with extra media stuff so they're pretty much the same. Its not WinXP itself.
I have Cox Cable.
8megs down. 512 up. So standard cable line. Slow upload.

That means 16 KB up and about 85 KB down.
So maybe thats the problem.
Although it was enough for BF2 till 1.03 after that patch I lost like 15 fps.
Maybe they changed something in the netcode with the new weapons.
And BF2142 is more heavy with all the Titan info and huge count of weapons and equipment.

I think you should try different video drivers. Some drivers naturally work with some games, some dont. Its just like that. Try some beta drivers, or 3rd party drivers, or older drivers.
Also it could be the audio just as well as the video. So try making audio low, turn off EAX, make it run on software.

fraps will destroy your fps when recording because it records at a certain fps. if you set it to record at 30 fps, then it slows your GAME'S FPS to 30 while recording. you set it to 1, then your game runs at 1 fps while recording. otherwise, it will not affect your system in the slightest.
had an AMD 64 3000+ with a 6600GT 128mb and 1 gig pc3200 ram. fraps did not screw with my performance at all unless i was recording (what a surprise the first time, considering i was in a plane and had it set to 15 fps...)
as for the OP, i really don't suggest using 4x AA unless you all ready got every max out and still have frames to kill.

Titan mode is meant for 32 players. I've played with 32 players max and titan seems fine. Plus there is enough action with that many people if not more then a 64 player conquest map.

Use your video card, dunno if nividea has it but they can record and not lag you up, fraps lags you.

Guys, you are amazing. If he uses FRAPS to prove that he has a FPS problem then FRAPS isnt the one causing it. WTF is wrong with you?
On Topid- dude, its really odd. I have a much weaker system and I play all on LOW, and I have EXCELLENT perfomance. I play with system barely managing to get minimu requirements. I suspect this problem of yours isnt game related.

I'm running it at low and 1024x768@60hz

I tested some more today and it seems that it's very server dependent.
Most official EA servers had very bad performance.
But on one of the TV battlerecorder servers had good performance.
I was playing Titan with 14 vs. 15 and it was playable at last.
I also was able to use the high setting.
And something I noticed was that the game would get very choppy when near fights with some of the players took place.
It was like breaking from 30 fps to 10.
It seems there is still something wrong with the netcode.
The Titan itself still remains a lagfest to me. :hmm:
Bottom line.
I don't think it's due to my hardware but more due to the server performance/netcode of the game.
If I take games like CSS, DoD in comparison that games would have a little slowdown here and there but nothing compared to BF2142.
I really, really hope it gets better with the retail.
So I will follow player reviews very closely.

Its not the netcode. As you saw I ran the game at all maxed out settings with 2xAA with a nearly identical configuration as you with FRAPS running at 30fps in full resolution, on a 61man TITAN server and it was smooth even with FRAPS.
Also its the same for any server I connect to with a green network indicator, which is majority of the large ones that are US based since I'm in Phx, AZ.

Yeah, so I'm not living in the US.
I live in germany and the official EA servers here hosted by Kplay were never that good.
And as I said there were huge differences depending the servers I joined.

Man, you just gave the very reason you get choppy connections; you live in germany and you are accessing servers on the other side of the world. Try and search for one in europe that isn't very far from you.
It's not the netcode per se, but your packets are getting lost somewhere between europe and america. I couldn't recommend you any server since I live in Mexico and have to access servers in Texas or Arizona to get any good pings; but hop around, the game is good.
Oh and for the love of god turn off EAX; it's still bugged, it was for the beta, it is for the demo.
Agreed with OP. It's trash.

I got basic 768 DSL.
That means 16 KB up and about 85 KB down.
So maybe thats the problem.
Those numbers don't make sense, unless you have an ungodly slow DSL connection (680kb down/128kb up is really, really slow).
If you have a decent spare computer available, try downloading the demo server files, setting up your own server and see if you get better performance.
http://www.fileshack.com/file.x/9601/Battlefield+2142+Demo+Dedicated+Server
I dunno what to tell you man, I'm running the demo on a 3700 San Diego core, 2GB RAM, eVGA 7800GT 256MB video with all games on a Raptor drive, with all my settings are cranked up to High (except AA) and it's pretty damn smooth.
