So it seems like alot of people still love this game so i ask the question..
Why should i install 1942?
What makes it better/different from other fps?
I've only played it in singleplayer as it normally doesn't work online...
Cheers

Very fun, I'd say more so than BF2. I used to love flying in Coral Sea - huge online battle between two aircraft carriers. First to sink the other wins.
The graphics are outdated, but with mods (such as the ever popular Desert Combat) the entertainment is limitless.
*I'm assuming it's Desert Combat, I always get it mixed up with the BF2 remake!

BF1942 was the first game of it's kind and it's awesome fun. Just by playing the singleplayer demo you can see it's a great game (El Alamein ftw)

Forgotten Hope is still prety good for 1942, but FH2 is now out for BF2 so there may not be very many people still playing it

Bf1942 got me hooked into playing in clans and competeing at video games. It has huge maps and you can use virtually all the vechicals (tanks,planes,ships.......on and on) and structures on the maps. The game also has alot of great mods and thoses are just free expansions you can explore if you wish to explore them.

I Still play BF1942 even though its 6 years old. BF2 Might have better graphics but the gameplay of capturing flag is identical and core gameplay is still fun. Unlike BF2 You can run the game on high with framerates around 75-90 which can't be said for bf2.

The huge variety of vehicles and size of maps makes 1942's mods excellent. There is endless fun to be had in the A-10 Warthog on the Desert Shield map :p

You haven't experienced real air combat until you've played Battle of Britain.

BoB was brilliant, there used to be a 24/7 server running it which I always used to flop in until I got the hit box aiming right.
Install it though because on mods like fh people actually communicate and you find there are quite a few random funny discussions going on during the game. Its a lot more chilled version of bf2/

I think the 24/7 BoB server is still up there. Though that was a few months ago when I lasted checked it.
Mods keep 1942 alive. Compared to the later BF series, 1942 is easier to mod, and is more viable to low-end computers.
Alex I remember the time when I did the spotting and you did the crazy bombing in Desert Shield. The moment you went minigunning the troops from a Blackhawk in Bocage was epic too.

1942 is awesome! Wing-walking is the sh¡t, so is soloing bombers on Brittan. And don't you forget about flog-walking!
I got into 1942 because I heard about the Interstate mod. I guess the mod was okay, but it wasn't much like Interstate '76/'82 (as intended). Eventually I ended up playing co-op with my dad on vanilla. From there we went to BF2 online. You can't have BF2 without 1942.

There is no excuse for not installing BF1942.
(except if you can only play SP then it's stupid, always go MP)

I dont play the mods, but vanilla is outdoes all Battlefields in relaxation and just playing the damn game. 1942 is the most balanced of the BFs. Overall, its just plain fun, you forget the graphics, stats and everything else when you play 1942, the original dream that is Battlefield.

I've always been itching to get 1942, with all the great reviews people give it. But I don't intend on playing SP, don't like SP FPSs. So I'm kinda afraid of the server count for the age of this game. I'm imagining logging on and finding only something like 10 populated servers.
But, what is the actual server count? Is it still decent enough to justify getting this game?

i wouldn't say BF1942 is the most balanced, especially infantry weapons where it was nearly impossible to shoot anyone at a distance with the medic gun or any non-assault class rifle. the assault weapons like the BAR were way better than anything else but since stats didn't matter back then, we didn't care if there were some imbalances. warships canons had crazy power, so did defguns except they were nerfed and couldn't rotate much, and air power was still a tad bit hard to deal with as a ground pounder. i'd say BF2142 is the most balanced, naturally through evolution of the series (although BF2 took a turn towards the worst). the only problem with 2142 is the imbalance of assault infantry class that gets a medpack, defib, and the noob-tube PK-rockets, in addition to their deadly guns. other than the assault class though, i'd say 2142 infantry is pretty well balanced, and of course vehicles are the most balanced as everything has a decent counter in BF2142.

Short answer is yes, I am sure you can pick up a copy for less than $20.
I have played this game since its release and even today I have no problem finding a populated server when the mood strikes me.
Just keep in mind that this is an older game with more of a cult following so you won't find anywhere near the number of servers that you will for BF2 but there are some decent ones out there and for less than $20 you owe it to yourself to check it out.
If you decide to get the game hit me up on XFire and we can check out a few server but keep in mind I don't play as much as I used to so I might be a little rusty and I may even embarrass myself a little...:p
