Much like its unfortunate series of protagonists, the Grand Theft Auto series seems to be continually under fire.
The latest parental interest group to put the game in its crosshairs is Mothers Against Drunk Driving, which commemorated Grand Theft Auto IV's release yesterday with its own official statement decrying the game.

Noting that drunk driving claims nearly 13,500 lives each year, MADD said that it is "extremely disappointed" that the game lets users get virtually drunk and then get behind the wheel of an equally virtual automobile.

"Drunk driving is not a game and it is not a joke," MADD said. "Drunk driving is a choice, a violent crime, and it is also 100 percent preventable."

MADD is asking the Entertainment Software Rating Board to bump Grand Theft Auto IV's rating up to AO for Adults Only from M for Mature. The ESRB's content descriptors for the game currently include "use of drugs and alcohol."
The parental group also said that it is asking the game's "manufacturer" to consider stopping distribution out of a sense of social responsibility, or out of respect for those who've been hurt or killed by drunk drivers.

I think that because it's in the game, less people will do it in real life... since they'll be like "it's freaking hard in the game, I pretty much always hit someone, and no matter what a cops always on my tail."

It's like "I've always wanted to do this and that, but it's illegal - if I could do it in a game, I'd be satisified and won't need to do it in real life" :/

Guys this is serious.
Drunk driving is not a game. GTA4 is lol.

but groups like MADD dont have the right to be interfering with the game world. I play Gta4 and im 14. ive been playing gta 3 since i was 7. Im not messed up. This game hasnt influenced me in anyway. seriously, MADD time to cut this s***. There are alot more violent games and more grafic content out there to argue about so stop ruining our fun with GTA4.

and seriously.....the number one reason for drunk driving is PEER PRESSURE not some video game where you can pick up hookers, start shooting and get a 6star wanted rating.....Its not like imma go out , drink, then drive a car, pull out my uzi, shoot, and go "Cool i got 6 stars"

VIDEO GAMES ONLY INFLUENCE YOU IF YOU LET THEM INFLUENCE YOU!!! REMEMBER THAT!

and dan2k3k4 i totally agree with you 100 percent

Yea. Where are the MAGSB (Mothers-Against-Galactic-Space-Battles) now? I mean, those games make me want to go to space and kill aliens, which claims thousands of lives a year.

(/sarcasm)

These interest groups pick and choose what is good/bad and it ends up making no sense whatsoever. If they're going to claim that one game makes people want to go and commit illegal offenses (GTA) why not target every single other game out there for those respective issues?

ITS A GAME

I'm 19 years old and the day I bought the game, my mom had to call me up telling me that the radio station she listens to was saying this game isn't good, it's violent and will make people violent and want to do the things they see so I shouldn't play it. Let's just say I LOL'ed and hung up.

My mom took the game, said I had no morals, grounded me, then proceeded to sell it. :dead:

Her logic was that even if I didn't support the use of drugs/prostitution/etc. in the game, I was "technically" supporting it through the purchase of the game.

Completely ridiculous.

lol same there! But seriously. MADD has never played it and really dosent knowthat you need to actually bust your @ss with missions in this game. I bet you that MADD has never seen the godfather, or Scarface before.

lol kodak @ MAGSB (Mothers-Against-Galactic-Space-Battles)

but seriously. Where are the MAMMORPG's (Mothers Agains Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games's ) ? Alot of them are couch potatos!!!! Seriously. My teacher plays WoW like everyday, and took 2 weeks off to level up lmao. he even plays it in school when we have math test.....its so funny having him react during a test xD

But seriously, My parents think this game is a great! Seriously no sarcasm! They think that this is the perfect game to show me on the dangers of crime, guns, shooting, greed, prositiution, hanging around wrong people, and stealing cars. and hellz yea it taught me something. Driving cars is way easier in GTA4 then in real life.It also taught me that you cant go on a drive by by pressing buttons. And you cant find weapons in an alley. And its hard to make money. And GTA is worth way more then 60 dollars xD

Violent video games do desensitize you to aggressive acts. In GTA games you are exposed to violence, drugs, prostitution, etc and you become desensitized to these themes over time. The U.S. Army mildly uses its game, America's Army, to desensitize possible future troops to war (When they see someone's head blown off, they won't feel a great deal of remorse). Though it has not been proven that violent games actually cause violent behavior; people have blamed GTA/other violent games for murder or other criminal acts, as the person in question has spent a large amount on these games.

This works with drunk driving too, you get desensitized to the behavior and may commit the criminal act.

How does a cartoon-esk video game desensitize you any more than what's already out there? GTA IV is overly exaggerated in what you can/can't do, and people who don't realize that are the ones who make the stupid decisions.

Again, What i said before in my first post.

VIDEOGAMES ONLY INFLUENCE YOU IF YOU LET THEM INFLUENCE YOU.

If you believe thats its only a game, you cant be desensitized. One of the leading causes of drunk driving is Peer Pressure, not GTA4 and thats a fact.

Do you drive? I can drive my car a hell of alot easier and 95-100 MPH than I can in GTA going 30

Yes, I accidently pulled up to 115 on the way home from San Marcos today :( Lucky I didn't get any wanted stars.
