View Full Version : Helicopters...useless?

What the hell did DICE do to the helos?
Upon startup in the Kamov 52, an enemy ran up, shot (only one shot) at the chopper with a SHOTGUN, and the amour went down to 72 from 100..pitch and roll have been nerfed beyond flyable (only SLIGHT adjustments to pitch and roll are allowed, rendering all real maneuvers useless)..and the weapons can't hit jack sh*t.
Only useful as transports? Wonder why they didn't make every helo a UH-60 or Mi-8! Honestly, you would think that an Apache or KA-52 would inspire fear into every soldier on the ground. Nope, because if we all just shoot our rifle at it, it will burst into flames.. :(

It was a Shotgun... They have high damage..
Try to hit the helo with shotgun when it's flying... See how that goes.. :D
I dropped helo with my M95 once though... It was smoking already before i shot it.. But still...
If the helos controls are too sensitive for you to fly with them, try to lower the sensetivity.. It worked for me when my sniper rifles crosshairs were bit too fast...

Far from useless in my opinion. Me and a friend of mine used the chopper for a whole round yesterday, He flew and i gunned. We both had over 500 points by the end of the round.
If you can get to grips with the controls, and can get a decent gunner, they are very powerful. As for that shotgun thing, i guess it just reinforces the fact that Helis are most vulnerable when on the ground.

i am a poor helo pilot so i stay away from them, however i have seen people do wonders with them so far, maybe you need a little more time adjusting to it.

I still gotta practise with the helos... I can stay on the air, as long as i don't start doing any fancy moves... :D

Yea i can just about manage a hover......anything else tho and ill soon be waiting to respawn.

Ah, Flames, here is how to hover..
You see, there is no TRANSITIONING in speed. What I mean by this, is I pitch forward, as far as I can go. Speed increases. Then, suddenly I pitch back, LEVEL, and it INSTANTLY hovers. BF2 was a MUCH better representation. If you just, apply cyclic, it will hover itself, unlike BF2, where slight adjustments to pitch, yaw, throttle were required.
Anyway, while I still think the sensitivity of damage is ludicrous (a descent rate of anything over, oh, say, 50 feet per minute, and on landing, half the armour is gone - while flying at max altitude, someone shot me down USING AN M4, seriously, it depletes like...sand through fingers), I rethought my position on helicopters..with a friend from a flight sim website, on his first time playing, he walked away with 270 points from gunning for me..and I, 310.
Instead of having some unaware f*ck gunning for me, and someone who would take the chopper, when I would start repairing it..we were at the least, a nuisance for the enemy, preventing them from reaching gold crates, stopping their camping with the artillery, etc.
Not totally useless..you just have to be VERY fast, recognise risks, what will get you killed, what won't, and how much more loitering you can take before you must RTB.

Shotgun to a helo. Dude. The chopper will need to be serviced if it is to fly ever again.

That'd be true. IF IT WAS A BELL JETRANGER!
Shotguns AREN'T powerful. Weak pellets, that rely on the area covered for a huge amount of damage. C'mon, you think that an Apache or Kamov would ever make it back to base, if a burst of MG fire could cripple it? You think, it would even be qualified for MILITARY SERVICE?
I do believe the M95 could do some light (serious if in the right place..) damage..but a few bullets out of an M16? This better not be the final state helicopters get left in, because the chain should go like this... helicopters > ground vehicles > infantry, infantry having a slight chance against the helicopter.
Not ground vehicles > infantry > helicopters, with a combat qualified aircraft having a slight chance against petty infantry.
*edit*
Hell, the Kamov can survive 23mm rounds to the engine! I don't expect this fact to be mimicked exactly by the game..but just SOME chance of surviving in this deathtrap?

It really makes no sense to compare real life helos with EA/DICE's creations... :D
Besides, if we are gonna start going towards realism with the helos in BF:BC...
I wanna be able to destroy tanks/other hard targets from 8000m with my Hellfires..
I personally like the fact that helos ain't so dominant anymore... For example in BF2, helos could rape everything along with Jets..
Now the pilots needs to be careful what they do...

I got like 10 points total from some "squad vehicle assist" thingys... :D
There was lot of static in the mic, and the time when we were in the helo, i didn't hear you at all. But sometimes on the ground i could clearly hear you...
This demo has lots of weird mic problems.. I just hope that they are fixed in the full game..

Aye, it does. But I can't even get online at the moment, won't let me sign into the PSN... This problem's at my end, yah?

It took me a whole clip of an M249 to take down a helo, did it twice, from (presumably) full health.

i was just in a chopper with a superb pilot, we both got over 300 and of course we won, with a good pilot the chopper can be superb

Out of 10 landing attempts, I think i've had one that had no health taken off, and a second that took about 10. All of my other attempts ended in a -10... it seems anything faster than NOT MOVING causes you to instantly explode into a katrillion fiery pieces.
Shame, considering i've 'mastered' the flying... *invert flying controls, set to 'mode 2'*

yeah the damage can be strange at times, landing slowly on flat ground can take about 10 damage off sometimes

To add insult to injury, I (after stealing the Kamov! Bloody hard through all that gunfire) had to land to repair. I had 46 points of health.
I made such a SLOW landing, that in the time it took to land, I could have destroyed a tank from full health with its cannon. It was also really (REALLY) soft, too..

If they could just tone down damage sensitivity a BIT to make it durable, I think we would all still be happy..its tipped a bit more towards helicopters, but thats what cover is for. ;)

yesterday myself and one of my friends jumped in a chopper, (he was the gunner 'cause he can't fly for **** xD) and he picked up 756 points ;) i had some 400 something.
he got repair points aswell

I haven't managed to pilot the Heli smoothly yet. I get on and end up crashing after a bit. What really got me pissed off was when I got on the Heli and as I was pressing the button to lift up I explode and it says that I committed suicide. -.-

What helped me loads was inverting the flying controls, and then changing it to 'setting 2'

Ah, the Kamov is great!
Its cannon doesn't do as much damage as the Apache's rockets, but it is more accurate, and can fire off more shots than the Apache can. It is meant to be flown with only one person. My record in a round today, was about 23 kills in the Kamov.
My KDR is actually around about 0.95 because of the Kamov (and to a lesser extent the Apache), although I have had my fair share of crashes.
If I can just say one more thing about helos..
I find, the best configuration, is default.
It is logical, to PULL BACK on the stick to pitch up, and inverting the controls destroys the intuitive configuration.
Also, if you want PRECISION flying, real, PRECISION, you NEED to set it to type one.
With 2, you ROLL and YAW at the same time. Not good! With 1, you need a bit of practice to control yaw and roll separately, but it pays off in the end.

Well today I managed to get 2 kills and 3 assists (how great am I) by changing it to Type 2 which was easier for me.
KC-10
06-15-2008, 12:29 PM
Mmm, of course 2 will be easier, it has less precision, because it does twice the work (roll, yaw..). But you WILL encounter a situation in which you must roll without turning, to avoid AA fire, and to stay on course, and to turn without rolling (think about this scenario; you are flying at low alt, and you must make a turn to allow your gunner to fire on the enemy: if you start rolling unintentionally, COLLISION, with a tree).
Also, keeping it on 1, will allow you to orientate yourself better than you can with 2, by forcing you to be aware of your situation (i.e, whether or not you need to roll and yaw, or simply yaw).

The key is to invert the axis... besides, I'm sort of used to the setting now.

If you don't have prior flight experience (at least, if you have little flight experience), you should invert the flight axis, it may seem more logical having to push the stick up to pitch up.
But if you have prior flight experience (about, 1000 hrs of flight simming, 5 minutes of a real Cessna 152 for me :D), leave the axis as it is by default, you won't get confused that way.

At the moment I'll leave at Type 2 but later on if I get any better I'll change it back to Type 1 just to try and see the differences.
I was getting raped by a chopper today... Everywhere I went there was no AA, and I was getting explosive rounds up my butt.
