As in this version there are kit unlocks aswell as gun unlocks, do you have to unlock all the things such as det packs, netbat, ar rockets (depending on class) before you can unlock a new gun? And does it have to all be in order?

Hopefully I'll have the game tomorrow, providing I find the box for my PS2.

There are 2 unlock trees per class with a new weapon at the top of each tree. You have to unlock the 3 'accessories' in that tree (in order from bottom to top) before being able to unlock the weapon at the top of that tree.

Once you unlock one top tier weapon, you have to start over at the bottom of the other tree to unlock the other weapon in your class' other unlock tree.

There are also player abilities which you can unlock (again, from bottom to top) that are applied to your soldier passively not matter which kit you take.

There are also Squad Leader unlocks that you can unlock that you can only use if you are a SL (and each unlock requires an increasing number of squad members to use)

Ah cheers for that, now I just have to think what tree to go down first...

Yes you do. You need all the items leading up to the weapon in the specific branch. It's 3 items and one weapon per branch. So to get the Lambert in the recon tree, you need the RDX, the Fade Delay NetBat and the IT-33 active camo first.

Where can we find these trees?

I knew how the unlock tier system worked, but I found this doing a search on Player Abilities. So they are permanent upgrades to your soldier regardless of kit, require no further activation, and don't take up any customiziation slots? If so then I'm going to work towards them before moving onto the support unlocks. Geez... 2900 pts until I'll be done unlocking all the player abilities. This ranking system is a killer lol. God I hope I get better in time. I never really did in BF2.
