View Full Version : NEVER EVER use the Support Shield outdoors...

OMG. Deploy this thing and EVERY enemy in a 100m has a nice red glowy bullseye to target.

First time I saw one I thought... Hmm? Wazzat? Better shoot it.
I was in a tank at the time. Splat.

Every time I saw someone use it outdoors they died in under 3 seconds. :D

Its STRICTLY a situational indoor tool.

Made me go for the EMP nade when I got my first unlock. Now that thing has alot more uses. I was pissing off tanks and BFR's for the whole night. :D

I have to disagree... I used it on Fall of Berlin at the closest front spawn point. Go as far left as you can and set it up on the short wall( you can put it on top of it). The wall guards your lower half and the shield guards your upper half... you can crouch and not be shot. Had about 10-15 enemies approach me from range and I killed about 10 of them I think with the Bianchi before they finally got me while I was standing up to shoot one of them. Just keep crouching and standing over and over taking small burst shots at them. So far the shield is about the only useful unlock Ive gotten so far.

Well, that sounds awfully situational. I use the EMP gernade on EVERY map. I love using it when the gunships come flying in low. :D

It's best used in the entrance of the corridor of titans in my opinion. Unless they keep throwing nades of coz. >:]

it's definitely a situational defense as people have described but is not limited to indoor use.

For instance, if your squad is crossing an open field/area you can lay it down and provide cover fire for them to attack that certain point and perhaps grab a silo, flag, or positional advantage on the enemy.

You may also use it's "shinyness" to an advantage as well, drop it down somewhere you are not, and when the baddies come in to check it out, you have the element of surprise on your hands =P

It's a CQC tool, you don't need to be inside to use it.

I'm not quite sure when to really use the shield, for example, in a titan corridor, if you lay down a shield, isn't it just an extension of a wall really? Since you'll end up having the same amount of yourself exposed anyway?

You can also use it for capping flags when there isn't much cover available. Sure the enemy may know where you are, but it can buy you some time until you cap that location.

I disagree too, Support Shields outdoors can be very useful defending flag positions.

I believe he said stricly situational INDOOR unlock. I was giving him a situational OUTDOOR unlock. It's all about placement... there are loads of good places to drop them. Every unlock is situational. Thats like saying "Oh Im going to unlock my Lambert Carbine so I can blow up every tank and apc that comes by". The Lambert Carbine is... situational. You need to either be shooting at someone who has lower hp than you, is facing the other way, or can't aim. EVERYTHING is situational.

From reading in the manual about it its designed to block infantry fire not armour if that helps.

I only got it as a field unlock last night and was wondering how it actually works? Does it work as a 2way blocker for bullets ie if you fire when prone behind it it blocks them as well or does it only block enm bullets (as last night I just crouched and fired over it).

Support Shield = Bullet Magnet = Dead

They should just replace the front of it with a 'shoot me here' sign.

Though it is effective at blocking corridors on the Titan.

It is a great element of diversion.

Setup the shield somewhere in a shady area where enemy troops are going to run towards, then take a flanking position and mow them down while they are target practicing on that thing. You can also setup a sentrybot right behind the shield to make diversion complete :D

Honestly, I think it is a wonderful asset indoors, eg. inside the titan used in key defensive position it can make it very hard for the attackers to get even a foot inside those corridors.

It will probably have ads on it soon. So hopefully they will read the ad instead of shootin me:)

Haha!! I havent unlocked this yet, as I do have the EMP nades.. I still dont understand what the EMP nade does but make a nice shiny blue picture and make it look like you are on drugs. The Shield never worked for me, usually 3-4 dudes mowed me down easily with its bright red neon lights that says "Hot Babes" So of course you'll see this a mile away, its a snipers dream to see the shield because they know some dork is laying prone in front of it. Insta-kill.

I use the EMP grenades primarily to get away from armored threats. When a walker or a tank is after me I use them for diversion, and to freeze his engine. Very useful in my opinion.

When armor threatens my squadmates I will spam him with EMP grenades, and since I am support I never run out. They usually turn around and try to get away asap. even when no engineer with rockets is threatening them. I can continue spamming those EMP nades for the rest of the game if this guy doesn't want to move his armor out of there :D

Yea Ive finally twigged with the EMP tonight after I kept getting killed. I thought it disabled everything but it just disables the engine not the weapons on say a tank.

Noticed as well about the shield its both ways for bullets (so I cant cheat and lay behind one and fire away). I used it to fire from side then hide behind on reloading. Its all been abit tricky today though what with having all my unlocks disabled cas of the stat bug (and doesnt help when Ive spent my first 3 just for a squad leader!).

I agree with Chiron. It only protects you for so long anyways. I am going to save mine for Titan mode.. The shield itself is more like a homing beacon that protection lol.

BFR's? Too much planetside for you.

SPS is okay outdoors for defending choke points. I've used in doors to great success forcing the enemy to go around me and attack me from behind. It does well when used in this way.

Chiron
10-23-2006, 06:15 PM
They are still BFR's.... (Big Fooking Robots.) :)

I HAVE found a use for the shield and anti-personnel machine gun. I usually hang out after capturing a silo or flag for some farmage.

I put the shield opposite the flag or silo, down around some cover to make it look as if I am setup and hiding in low cover. Then I set the mini-gun 5 meter to the left or right of the shield. When the enemy drives up or runs up they see the gun and shield and setup to attack it.
I am opposite from the shield and gun, up high covering the cover they will use to attack the shield and gun. So as they attack I mow them down from above and behind. Then they usually come back in a tank, pissed off. :p

EMP grenade is one of the best/most useful unlocks easily. I love it. It's even better spam than a regular grenade (well, against vehicles anyway). :)

Try this:
Toss down an ammo pack. Ready the EMP grenade and wait for enemy vehicles. Spam away and you will get yourself a shiny new tank/walker/whatever because the driver will get out in frustration because he can't do anything with it because it is being constantly bombarded with EMP. Kill driver. Vehicle is now yours. Rinse and repeat as needed. :)

I found a useful place for this as well. It can help provide good cover when you are camping the upper Titan gangway corridors.

I usually get there by 'podding back onto the top of my titan, dropping down the hatch, and camping there. It's a good spot, but your side's exposed to fire coming from the opposite gangway on the other side. I usually deploy the shield here so that I don't have to worry about that.

I don't think I saw a support shield yet, but Iwant to go for the support tree next. How high is the shield? Half a person, a whole person? Large enpugh to stand behind, crouch or just prone behind?

El Cid
10-25-2006, 09:10 PM
It's more than enough to cover you when prone, and when crouching it will only expose your head and shoulders. When standing it will only cover your legs.

Has anyone tried to chain a few of them together into a fence of Support Shields with another Support user? You could basically BLOCK off a corridor in Titan mode, and force your opponents to JUMP.... Ie, they can't shoot well. Basically makes them sitting ducks. =) W00t.

I've found that if you set up two shields in the entrance to either of the lower console corridors, the ceiling is so low that you can't jump over them and the entrance is completely blocked. Opponents would have to hit them with 1200 total damage per shield to destroy them... after which you just put up more. If you could get a handful of guys to roam the cargo bay (or just camp in the vents) killing the opponents who are trying to destroy the shields, you could completely seal off one of the corridors this way.

Or you could just team up with an Assault or two and resup them while they rocket-spam the entrance.

Hehe ... I DO use it outdoors, but as a distraction. Just place it somewhere well visible and wait for the enemy to shoot at it :)

the shield is the best unlock i have so far. in the titan once ur shield is down, u put it down slightly away from the protruding (forgooten the word) things that hold the walls up. then when ur lying down u can shoot through the edges of the shield at enemies coming in but they cant shoot u cus they are not accurate enough to shoot through the gap without lying down and picking spot. by then they will be mowed down. even better when u have an ammo hub down as u will get ammo points once u reload, and if other ppl are there they almost always throw grenades to the entrance and of course they need to get more.

so the shield:

u live, lots of them die.

You could just use the shield as a decoy when you have your clrak. Place the shield down and stand behind a corner. Then, when an enemy comes to investigate, use the clark to blow their head off!

hirschce
10-28-2006, 03:44 PM
its even betta lying down cus enemy could just throw grenade round corner. lying down they have to come round throw grenade, and the bit where i go i can shoot em full of bullets and move just a little to left and nade does nothing cus am effectively behind wall

I have started using the shield as a diversion. I just deploy a sentry gun behind it.

Tru that it's very easy to see outdoors, but at the smae time, if you find it draws too much attention, what i do is use it as a distraction, throw it down then run the other direction. I also find that they attract a lot of ppl that try to flank it with a knife, and when they get behind it and find that noone's there, free points:D

Kraxis
01-21-2007, 10:43 PM
You can place it ontop of ladders to deny the enemy the use of said ladder. That way you can safely sit in that bunkertower and shoot your hearts out.

You can also use it to block the lower entries to the Cargo Bay and use the Clark to pop the guys trying to run past it. Since it creates a natural bottleneck they can't come at you more than one (or rather they will go for the easy way and come one at a time).

But from there to beat the EMPs or the Pulsemeter... nah!

I love the shield :). It has saved me from a walker loads of times. The walker knew i was there and in desperation I put up a shield on my exposed side and it shot at me for a whole two minutes.... Someone had RDXed it by the end:D . Also I dont care if it is a shoot me sign. When i am defending and i have a blind spot I put aa shield up to protect me from any instaheadshots from the side. Also have you ever done a 360 shield there is no point but it helps when your healing people. I wonder if an nlock could be made too stack shields on top of each other and allows three shields out at once :). I got goood ideas but no one ever listens

use it as an extra wall.

If you have a wall in front of you, which is lets say 10 m in lenght, then there is nothing, place the shield 1 meter away from the wall on the edge, and fire from the middle.

Micster
01-24-2007, 07:12 AM
I sometimes use it outdoors when I want to mess the enemy up. Place it in the middle of the road as a distraction and a possible blockade for FAVs (Do they block FAVS? Or do they blow up when run over?).

Buttoneer
01-24-2007, 09:54 AM
It's a fantastic distraction even in the Titan. Titan core open, full of defenders, place the shield at the top of a ramp and go elsewhere to fire on the enemy as they try and grenade you where they think you are. Brillient. even better if there's someone in the vents shooting from the direction of the shield as they get very confused.
