Commander!

Hands down the easiest way. I have been doing so-so since playing 2142 in points. In a rare round I would finish in the top 3. Last night I tried playing commander a lot. Almost every game I got the gold. Games I did not get the gold, I got silver or bronze.

Here are the tips for playing commander:

1. Commander is not for running around and killing. Stay in commander mode almost all the time. A lot of games I got gold, I never once killed an enemy soldier except with Orbital strike.

2. Spot the enemy for your team! Don't spot enemies that are already in your UAV.

3. Give orders to squads

4. Drop supply crates to squads

5. Save your orbital strikes and emp strikes for then they will be most effective, like when enemy caps your flag.

6. You can kill tanks, apcs and sometimes walkers with direct hit orbital strike followed immediately with an emp strike. Is a walker devastating your team mates by camping? You as commander are the cure!

7. Put UAV's where it will spot the most enemies.

Thats it. Spotting enemies in command mode and giving squad orders(and the squad has to follow the order) will get you the most points. Some people have gotten annoyed when I am commander, cause they are constantly hearing "Enemy spotted". The vets should know its better to have too much intel then not enough.

Thanks to all the teams I commanded last night, I got like 10 gold medals and between 50-100 points on each round.

Just add one quick thing: Use the scan function like hell! IT allows you to direct squads easier, as well as placing orbital strikes and spotting infantry around the map.

Great guide overall

Okay, I just tried command mode...and I don't know how the hell to do anything in it? I'd like to be effective at it...until the past year have been a huge fan of RTS games...but I can't figure out how to do jack in it...other than dropping orbital strikes on my current position.

Click the CapLocks button. You are now in the commander screen. Rightclick on a given position. This opens a menu of options, such as issuing a squad orders (determined by your selection in the upper left corner), or dropping artillery/supplies/emp on that position. It also allows you to move your titan.

That's commander mode!

Some people have gotten annoyed when I am commander, cause they are constantly hearing "Enemy spotted". The vets should know its better to have too much intel then not enough.

Understand, though, that after a point it ceases to become an advantage for your soldiers because A) it makes it more difficult to hear important auditory cues like the rumble of an approaching tank or the sound of a Recon decloaking, and B) it will get very repetitive and annoying.

By all means, spot approaching armor. Spot the lone infantryman making his way to an undefended flag. Spot aircraft. But don't spot every random soldier you see on the battlefield.

If you just ran sat and you have uav going, everyone else is blind until they recycle. If I see guys trying to cap away from uav, I will spot for them. I prefer the chatter to sitting blind when I'm capping so I do it when I command.

in bf2, commander points is divided by half to be added into global points
Should be the same in 2142?

Also, always talk to your squad leaders. Telling them why you want them to defend or attack an area, let them know "Everyone is in front of you", or "There are three guys trying to take yard," "I have supplies ready for whoever needs them," "UAV will be up in 15 seconds," and the list can go on and on. A commander that talks to his squads will be much more effective than one that just spots stuff.

You can't really spot a lot of enemies using commander console like in BF2 anymore because you're be block with the stupid message "Shut up and ditch this channel!"
That pisses me off! :-<

Ummm... I'm pretty sure that the commander isn't blocked from spamming the voice channel. It's the commander's job to spam "infantry spotted"

I can't hear it enough. I would much rather a commander spotted too much than not enough.
It can get repetitive and annoying sure. But not as annoying as getting a Voss round in your ear or a shiv in your back.

Commander makes or breaks MOST Conquest teams.
Commander in Conquest needs to do ONLY Commander role. Much too Much activity for him/her to try and kill stuff and be an effective commander.

1.Your score as commander is at the end of the round, You don't get points for anything you do personally as commander. Your commander score is entirely dependent on your team.

a.Commander bonus, which you see at the bottom of the screen (+1 Commander Bonus). When people follow your orders, cap a flag/silo, guard a flag/silo, ask for and receive supply drops.

b.Average score of everyone on your team. each time someone gets a point, you get (1 / # of players) added to your commander score. In other words, if there's 16 players on your team, every time someone gets a point, you get 1/16 of a point. if the number of players doesn't change, what you end up with is the team average score.

c.War college ribbon is rewarded for 45 Commander points, and the Combat Commander ribbon is 40 points. Naturally, a Conquest map with only 30/64 playing will make this easier, as it takes much longer to finish. If there are late joiners to the round, your average score will include them, and thus drag your average score down appreciably.
War College Ribbon:
• IASR: 45 Commander Score
• Global: 60 Commander Hours
• Global: 2 Win:Loss Ratio

d.If a squad is ordered to attack/defend, you get a point for any kills they get. UAV enemy spotted will net you points for any kills. Supply drop crates requested and given will net you points.

2.Command Screen Squad Tab

a.Squad Tab is in the upper left corner. Click on the tab if you want to hide the Squad details. Click it again to drop down. On the Squads tab are 10 columns. Starting from the left, column 1 is the Squad number. Column 2 is the current Squad order. The yellow sword is Attack, the purple shield is Defend, a white arrow is Move. A yellow exclamation point indicates the Squad Leader is requesting new orders. A blank means the Squad has no current order.

b.The speaker icon in column 3 allows the Commander to mute individual Squad Leaders by clicking on the icon. Column 4 is the Radio. The Commander can right mouse click on this icon to bring up various squad comments. Available comments are: "Commend Squad", "Rebuke Squad", "Follow Orders!", "Move! Orbital Strike!", "Orbital Strike Available", "Supplies Available", "UAV Available", "Sorry" and "Divide Squad". In Titan Mode, the following comments are also available. "We Need More People To Defend Our Titan", "We Need More People To Attack Their Titan", "We Need More People On The Ground". To select more than one squad, hold the Ctrl key while left mouse clicking on the squad numbers, or use number keys 1-9.

c.Column 5 is the status column for the Squad Leaders (SL’s). A skull means they are dead. If alive, the column either shows a vehicle icon to indicate what vehicle they're in or their kit icon. Columns 6-10 are the squad member columns. Just as with column 5, if dead, the box will show a skull. If alive, it will show either the kit icon or a vehicle icon if they are in a vehicle. If you mouse over a particular squad, the white pane on the right of the squad tab will open that shows the Squad Name, player names of the squad leader, and squad members, the name of the CP/silo currently being attacked/defended, along with players' respective kit and loadouts.

3.Assistance Tab

a.At the bottom of the screen is the Assistance Tab, which shows the status of your Commander Assets.

b.Sat-Track is deployed by left mouse clicking on the button. The Sat-Track scans the entire map and provides a snap-shot in time of the location of enemy infantry, enemy vehicles and enemy Commander assets. Each of these show up as static fuzzy red dots as shown on the screen shot below. These dots remain on the Command map for several seconds. Once the red dots fade, the Commander can spot desired enemy targets by right mouse clicking over the location of the red dot(s) and selecting "Spotted" from the drop down menu. Depending upon what the target is, the dot will be identified as enemy Infantry, Sniper, Tank, APC, Vehicle or Walker. If Infantry, a distinct red dot will show on the map. Snipers, Armor, vehicles and Walkers will show up with unique icons. Once spotted in this fashion, the enemy will show up on your team's mini-maps for several seconds and the spot will move on the map as the enemy moves. If an infantry target shows up as white it is the enemy's Commander. It is recommended that Commanders use the Sat-Track constantly when available to give you the overall view of enemy deployment on the battlefield. This will help you to place UAV’s, EMP Strikes, and Orbital Strikes with better efficiency. It is suggested that the Commander not "spam" the spotting capability as many players find the constant voice alerts annoying. Limit spotting to threats that are of immediate concern such as enemy behind our lines attempting to take rear bases. Spot attack assets or enemy that your team members can actually get to and kill before the spot drops off their mini-map.

c.Asset deployment for Supplies, EMP strikes, UAV, or Orbital Strikes is done by left clicking on the asset, and then left clicking again on the map where you wish to place the item or effect. Optional, is to right click on the map and select the asset to deploy from the drop-down menu. Zoom the map using the right mouse, scroll wheel on mouse, or “N” key to get a more precise placement. Dropping a supply box on top of a tower instead of the Silo/flag helps no-one. A combination of EMP strike to immobilize armor, then Orbital strike, makes it a deadly combination for both infantry and armor. A fully filled tab that is associated with that asset means it is ready for use. In TiTan mode, the Orbital Strike tab is replaced by the Move TiTan tab. (Which is disabled on Cain’s server.) You can click on an asset to request a repair by a squad, or drop a supply crate on it to accomplish the same thing.

SAT-TRACK: 30 sec to recharge.
SUPPLIES: 60 sec to recharge, stays for 300 sec.
UAV: 60 sec to recharge, scans for 30 sec.
ORBITAL STRIKE: 90 sec to recharge.
EMP STRIKE: 120 sec to recharge.

4.The Resign button is at the lower right corner, enabling you to resign your position during the game.

5.Giving Orders

a.Left click on the squad (Use Ctrl to select more than one squad) to highlight, or use the number keys (1-9), and right mouse click on your desired flag/silo. When you right click, a drop down menu will come up that will give options of "Zoom", "Spotted", Orbital Strike", "EMP Strike", "UAV", "Supplies", "Attack", "Defend" or "Move". If you right mouse click over one of your destroyed Commander assets, a "Repair" order will also show up on the drop down menu. If you don't get the "Attack" or "Defend" options, right click again on the flag. BF2142 is overly sensitive to the point on which you click.

b.Squad Leaders may request Supplies, UAV, Orbital Strikes and EMP Strikes from the Commander. The Commander will hear the request and see a yellow highlighted symbol corresponding to the requested item on the Commander Screen at the location requested by the SL. Right mouse click on this symbol, bringing up two options, "Accept" or "Reject". If accepted, the asset will be provided at the location the SL indicated when they made the request. It is much harder to see squad member requests, but you will see the request on the squad lists.

c.Use VOIP as a Commander. To VOIP with squad leaders use the "B" key. To VOIP with an individual squad or multiple squads, select the squad(s) and then use the "V" key. The Commander may also issue orders "in-game" by pressing the "T" key, which brings up the Commander's Commo Rose. It is much more efficient to tell SL’s that Silo 3 is undefended, than going through the process of putting up an attack or defend order, and much more likely to be followed. You can then put your order in after the quick explanation on VOIP.

6.Commo Rose tones and notes

a.Commend - This tells the squad they're doing a good job. A pat on the back, so to speak.

b.Rebuke - This tells them that they're doing a bad job and that they should try harder.

c.Follow Orders! - Is just that. It gives them a (hard) slap on the wrist and tells them to do what you asked them to do.

d.Move! Orbital Strike! - should be fairly obvious. In other words; "Get the **** out of the bloody way. With FF=Off, this isn’t a problem.

NOTES and Rehash:
•Wait for Sat-Track to fade (Power down) before spotting for your team, or it will now be displayed on their mini-maps. (And contributing to worthless spam)

•To move around a little easier, you can click on the mini-map in the upper right corner when zoomed in. It's great for when you want to stay zoomed in close to the action, but want ease of movement as well.

•Scan the Squads Tab (in column 2) to check that each squad has either an attack (yellow sword) or defend (purple shield) order; and that the order is consistent with what the squad is currently doing. Some SL’s simply forget to issue an order and others are too busy in the heat of battle to bring up the Commo Rose. Giving an attack/defend order to a squad that is clearly going for a particular flag/silo on the other side of the map makes you look bad. (And ignored)

•Talk to your SL’s and Squads via VOIP. You’ll be glad you did.

•Orbital Strike on conquest will stop a charge by the other team in Conquest, but it will not generate you points. Your team killing them, taking flags/silo’s etc. , is what generates your final Commander points.

*If the SL's (and/or squaddies), are not issuing nor following any orders, your points as a Commander will suffer greatly. Great squads will rack up vast rewards for both you and your squads.

•It is (for the most part) considered a no-no for the commander to grab an armor asset and sit there at the base. Your team can’t use it now, and it won’t re-spawn. Similarly, grabbing a gunship and zooming all over the map means you are NOT being the commander. Such actions have proven more often than not to hurt the team. Some people are ultra uber and can rack up pins for playing while they are commander, AND do a more than adequate job as commander. I am not one of those people that can both command and play on Conquest, but that is just me. TiTan is doable as Commander and playing, as it is much less work as commander there.
