The guys from FiringSquad (http://www.firingsquad.com/) have posted up their full review of Battlefield 2142 today, giving the game a 73/100. Here's what they had to say:

Battlefield 2 was a huge step forward for infantry combat in the franchise. Previous Battlefield games lagged clearly behind their infantry-oriented peers like Medal of Honor. BF2 really brought infantry into the spotlight, with much crisper controls, movement, terrain suited for cover, and excellent weapons feel. It wasn’t quite Call of Duty, but infantry was good enough that all-infantry servers became fairly common in the server browser. In Battlefield 2142, this seems to have taken a step back. Partly due to the way maps are layed out, the unreal weapons, and even the graphics (more on that later), all add up to an infantry experience that is significantly less compelling than Battlefield 2. There are areas where it comes together, like on the Titans, but in general we’re disappointed with infantry play.

What's with all the low review scores?

Doesn't matter. I am getting this game for thanksgiving or Dec.3 birthday anyway. I love futuriustic warfare because I am Wars and Trek fan. The modern warfare craze will subside soon and Quake Wars and BF2142 will redefine this stale FPS genre.

Psh, the critics are being ignorant. I always dreamt about a game like 2142, with the ice age and all. Who cares if it's not uber as **** state of the art engine that everyone will have to upgrade through the nose to play.

its true that its not really infantry based...but the game's still really fun. if they ever came out with an infantry only mode, which i highly doubt, it would make the multiplayer gameplay even better. but then again, this would kill the engineer kit.

If it's worse for infantry now, why do I die less from vehicles than I did in BF2?

5 bucks says they weren't fans of the "mechwarrior" title :p . Honestly, that is one of the main reasons I got it, that and I love fps war shooters ;) .

Agreed, BF2142 infantry is far better equiped for dealing with vehicles than BF2 ever was. Not to mention several city maps which BF2 didn't have outside Karkand.

I enjoy Firingsquad but lately they've had a bunch of stinker reviews, as well as a horrible and laggy new website (how does one make a website lag?!?!). This one seemed rooted in the anti-Battlefield bias that's been floating around lately. If anything BF2142 is a refinement of the battlefield series with maps and balance being at the center of the process.

Finally, someone with some sense of reality.

Cryisis, which will pwnzor everything else out there, will in all likelyhood require a significant hardware upgrade for me to get the performance I get out of this lovely BF2/142 Engine.

Anyone who thinks that introducing a brand new engine with a brand new set of major problems with every franchise release really needs rethink their position.

Now that it has much much better netcode, and significantly reduced load times, how can anyone in their right mind b1tch, honestly.

I have said many times that BF2 was really a grand experiment to refine the player experience and I can truly say that EA has hit the nail on the head on this one.

I also would like to echo the author's comment that EA please not make any major changes to this, it is fine the way it is. Add on all you like tho :D
