How exactly does it work? Do you just have to turn it on and then let it hover above you? Tried it as a field unlock and didn't notice any difference.

You have to bring the handheld device out and hit the fire button I believe.

Dice didn't really code the drones/sentry guns correctly, at the moment they are very hit and miss, just a lot more miss than hit....
In answer to your question yes, you are meant to just activate them and then they should do their thing, but as I said, they aren't really working right now, stick with the SLSB it'll do your squad much more good.

Correct - Go into the customize menu and add it there first - remember, you need at least 2 members in your squad.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if I had to hold the handheld device for it to scan and show on the minimap. I still might go for it, just to get the attack drone later.

I discovered yesterday that they have to be reloaded if you lose them :)
After the drone went AWOL I clicked liked a mad to get it back.
Then I noticed the empty ammo-bar and dropped an ammo-crate to resupply, which got it up and running again.
And I found out that you can have both the beacon and the drone deployed at the same time.
Just deploy the beacon, and next time you die switch to the drone. The beacon will remain active when you respawn and deploy the drone.

Why were you using it as support? the pulse meter does almost the same thing except it's not omnidirectional.

My unlocks are in the engineer tree, I only play support for Titan defence.
And the drone is omnidirectional and handsfree, so I can still use my weapon.
The weapons of the attack drone might come in handy too, I have yet to try that.

But the Pulse meter doesn't relay that info to your squads Netbat hemlets! :) The Otus will ..... Just like the PDS scanner that the Engi has! It also relays info to your squad with the netbat unlocked!
OOOPPS!! I meant to quote Snooze! ... Sorry Vreki!
Don't forget - you must have your 3D map enabled as for the drone to register locations on your screen (left Alt).
I was using my drone and the dystek pulse scanner together (great for situational awareness) and I was like, wth? where are the little red diamonds that I have come to love!
The next day while brooding over this "bug" I realized my error ;)
