At the moment, medals give nothing. How about this?
NOT INCLUDING 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place medals!
Imagine your unlocks being in tiers. For example, let us use assault. Defib is tier 1, advanced medpack is tier 2, smoke grenade is tier 3, and voss is teir 4. The lower on the ladder, the lower the tier. The higher on the ladder, the higher the tier.
For every medal you earn, you get an upgrade point.
Every one of your unlocks can be upgraded. The cost to upgrade depends on its tier. A tier 1 unlock takes 1 upgrade point. A tier 4 upgrade takes 4 upgrade points.
Upgrading an unlock makes it better in some way. An engineer could upgrade his anti-tank rocket to reload faster. A support could upgrade his scanner to scan 360 instead of 90 degrees. A recon could upgrade his inviso device to give off no sound. Assault could upgrade his weapon to include a larger clip. A squad leader could upgrade his squad leader beacon to have his old beacon auto-destroy when placing a new one.
Just some upgrades that wouldn't be overpowered. Perhaps the larger clip would add 5 or 10 more bullets. Maybe the support scanner doing 180 and not 360. Just things that are nice little upgrades...but don't overpower the item.
There arn't too many medals...so no one could fully upgrade their gear. For example, it would take 10 medals just to upgrade one side of a class' unlock. 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10
Something like this would require much planning...since there's no going back...so why not have a once a week ability that allows you to take back an upgrade?
