View Full Version : What's with squads?

Heya,
I have noticed a constent re-occurance of something in BF2142. Im basing my comparison on BF2 and I have noticed that squads jsut don't work as a team in this game.
Each round I start a squad called "Teamwork", I use voip and I constently give orders out when needed also supplying transport such as a helicopter/apc/jeep or Squad leader beacon. The annoying thing I find in BF2142 is people join at their own free will yet decide not to work as a team! Out of a possible full squad 90% of them seem to ignore orders and just do as they wish; the squad then falls apart as it seems only me and one of person (If i'm lucky) following orders.
When in BF2 I found more people followed orders and worked as a team, although this could greatly be because nearing the release of BF2142 only long term players was in the game.
I don't really know myself the reason for this topic; I guess I just wanted everyone elses oppinions on this subject. Only thing is, BF2142's teamwork issue combined with lag, fps and server problems I can see myself going back to BF2 in the near future.

At this point 90% of everyone playing is a "noob", they just got the game and want to check everything out. The games only been out for 2 weeks.
The only way to get consistant teamplay in almost any game is to clan up with some like minded miscreants and play on a shedual at certain times. Otherwise your at the mercy of the fates.

Well, I know what you mean, and if you're really determined to get team players, then kick players from your squad that aren't pulling their weight. After a few rounds, you'll probably have 2 or 3 squad members that are keen to follow orders. There *are* players out there who like squad tactics - I'm one of them.
But here's the rub: if someone's a poor leader, then they wont inspire people to follow them. If the squad leader changes his mind a lot, if the tactics are poor, if he's loud and abusive over VOIP, then people will start to ignore the squad leader.
Now, I'm not saying this is you, but in my experience, many squad leaders are more interested in the squad doing what they're told in order to a) support the leader, and b) help the team. But we're all playing this game to have fun, and when it becomes clear that the squad leader's in it for himself, it's not very inspirational.
The best squad leader will finish the round with scores in the middle of his squad, NOT with the highest score in his squad. Why? Because his most important responsibility is to stay alive so people can spawn on him, and that often means staying out of the way. Squad leaders shouldn't be front line soldiers (assault or engineer) because they get killed a lot. He'll get kills and points, but the squad leader CANNOT be a glory hound. If he is, the squad will fall apart very quickly.

Yesterday I joined a squad named "Orders". It went great, and the Field Upgrades came at an incredible speed.
And then the last good SL left and with got stuck with one who didnīt issue any orders.
I Requested orders, I informed him in Squad speak that he was the SL, I Cursed, I slammed my fist in the table and scared the dog away, I barely resisted the temptation to TK him with the knife. Nothing.
He single handedly ruined the teamwork squad on that server :(

Bollocks. If you want to stat pad or play on a private server, join a clan.
If you want team work, shop around until you find a squad where people talk, and then see if the squad leader knows what he's doing.
If you want really good team work, play with friends.

Start your own, say in team chat that your looking for people who want to work somewhat together as a squad.
If your in squad and the leader quits, if the new leader isn't doing anything say in squad chat that your going to make a squad to continue teamplay because the new leader isn't doing anything.
Theres also a thread (http://www.totalbf2142.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6748) around somewhere with lots of names of people who want to work as a team. Ping to the servers becomes an issue every so often, but I've had a few good squad ups with some of them.

Yes, I'd be afraid that people would join the squad thinking 'hey! free bonus points and field upgrades!'
All they have to do is join the squad and they can keep on doing what they were doing before only they'll receive bonus points and field upgrades.
Feel free to kick out members of the squad that are not obeying orders.

many times the sl sucks, giving dumb orders while he himself is running allover the place. squad mutiny against dummie-sleaders would be nice

People don't get the bonus points unless they are performing actions within the radius of the waypoint, so they are wasting their time if they join for points and head off elsewhere.
I have noticed SLs also not even knowing that they should be setting waypoints. Luckily, I gained a lot lot of SL and CO experience in BF2, so our squads stuck together before there were points involved :)
I usually start a squad called VOIP, but it's a lottery whether anyone even uses VOIP. I rarely play anywhere other than TG unless I happen to stumble on the rare VOIP users on Australian servers. Even then, there is only max one squad talking per side usually.
People just don't realise they are missing out on a hugely immersive aspect of the game.

instead of squad time the medals 'n stuff should require team accomplishment score. If I'm not interested in teamplay I'll just lonewolf

Depends if the SL is messing around in AA or something like that, I go and do my own thing but if they are actually working for the good of the game i'll stick by them.

I join squads for the field upgrades and extra points when the squad leader issues orders (some of them dont) and i can get more points by reviving/resupplying/healing them.
Usually i stick with the squad but i tend to wander off sometimes

The field upgrade bar at the top left only fills when doing squad actions (within the radius). So, yeah, if the rest of your squad is following orders, then even a lone wolf will benefit from the upgrade if they are part of that squad, but hanging out elsewhere.
I still don't really get the lone wolfing obsession with some people. I score much higher and get a much better KD ratio when with a talking squad, especially on Titan attack / defence.
What kills me, is as a Commander, the squads that ignore orders or actually reject them despite having given them an order to ATTACK THE SILO THEY WERE ALREADY ATTACKING. That way, if they just hit page up, the squad that's already massing on the silo can get a bunch of extra points.
How retarded do you have to be to reject orders that do nothing but help you make more points? The kid replied to my "wtf?" with "I don't need someone to tell me what to do." Uh, you're a jackass and a toolbox. Die in a fire.
Also, stop random mutinies! I got mutinied, despite having helmed the team to an overwhelming lead, when the other team only had 5 points left before we won. I got robbed of my double points for no reason whatsoever. I think mutinies need to have the name of the person calling for it posted...just so I can TK his ***.

hit tab and take a look at the manage(?) tab .. the person who called the vote *should* be highlighted. But on that matter ... when voting to kick someone we should see that persons stats right in the text so we can differ between *wtf*he*pwned*meh*KIIIICK* and TKs more easy.
(Ive been saying that ever since BF1942 :hmm: )

Usually i can't kick people out, but can only see the invite tab.
I'm still wondering about this one actually :)
To answer your first note, a couple of unconfirmed things were brought to my mind :
1. Based on the ingame tips, supplying (heals/ammo/revives/repairs) teammates land you a bonus point, regardless of your position = meaning more points if you stick together.
2. Based on word of mouth, you get points for doing action near the Squad Leader, regardless of your position = meaning more points if you stick together.
Since i'm only playing as squadleader, haven't really seen it with my eyes.

yeh the amount of teamwork or lack of thus far on 2142 sucks, this generally being due to new games = noobs as already highlighted.
if anyone in this thread plays uk servers and r good team players feel free to add me to buddies dark_man_5696 (surprisingly). So we can have some kick *** squads

Well, if the mutiny is successful, you'll know who called it cos they're commander. Which is of course why you got demoted, cos someone else wanted the x2. And I feel your pain, a good commander is hard to find, and when works hard for the team like you did, it's grossly unfair not to get the x2 reward, but that's life. Or to be more exact, that's immature teenage boys.

I give orders as a squad leader and take them as a squad member.
I'm NathanX in-game.
