I am somewhat confused as how to issue orders in this game as a squad leader, its not like BF2 where you said attack here using your keys as you would for spotting an enemy. How do you issue orders to your squad mates?
Two ways: look at where you want your team to go, hit T and "Issue Order" or the more exact way, hit Caps Lock, right click on a flag and select defend, attack, etc.

or to issue an attack/defend order on a specific flag, then instead of hitting caps locks you have to aim at the icon on the 3d map of the flag/silo/thing

If you look up at a flag it will highlight it with a yellow box around it, then hit T & then left click!
Thats the easiest!

In BF2 you could select any spot and order an attack, defend, move, repair, destroy, etc.
In BF2142, the type of order is determined by the location of the order and the status of the flag/silo.
If you make an order not on a flag/silo, it is a move order. If it is on a flag/silo controlled by your team it is defend. If it is neutral or controlled by the other team, it is defend. Your squad will only ear bonuses when the order is attack or defend.

Yeah, and this pisses me off. I usually try not to take my squads into the middle of the ****storm (apc/walker alley in Berlin, for instance, or the main entrance in gibraltar), so I'm usually defending the southern alley on Berlin. I have a hard time getting any points for myself or my squad while we're down there, because we're not really attacking crossroads, nor are we defending the uncap. If nothing else, when you want to hold that alley, and you want points, you have to click one of the flags, and your dumber squad members tend to actually run off and do what you say.
Also, a question: a lot of the time the commander will re-issue the same order I've given to my squad. Does the commander not get the bonus points unless he issues the order? I always wondered whether the commanders doing that were just idiots and too stupid to see my current orders, or if they do it because they don't get the bonus otherwise.
I'm pretty sure there's no bonus for the commander issuing orders, but I don't know the exact cause of the commander bonus scores. Usually, I can tell as a Commander when the squad has given orders, but considering the console isn't perfect, there's a good chance your orders might not be showing up on the screen when the commander is watching.

There *is* a "commander bonus" for a squad following orders. I just don't know if you get a bonus for squad leaders giving orders themselves (and not just accepting the commanders').

Commanders are re-issuing your orders to get points. You don't get points unless the SL accepts your order. I do that a lot, see that a squad wants to defend or attack a place, so I re-issue the order.

If a Commander Gives an order to the Squad leader & he Agrees (page up) then that order is relayed to the squad of the SL who accepted the order. That way the SL doesn't have to issue his own order! The Commander gets points for each kill that occurs within that Order Radius & the SL & Squad get Squad points & Field upgrades for kills within the radius.
I always try to issue orders on contested Flags & Silos! If you issue the Attack Command (Commander or SL) on a flag/silo & then you take the flag & there are still enemies in that area, I Switch it to the Defend Order!
The Move Command gives NO points or Squat! But it can be used to cover a chokepoint!
Also if the Squad get kills within the Radius of the SL, they get points! Also if you are commanding & zoom in & spot a target so it puts the red dot on an enemy, the Commander gets points if that enemy is kills. Not sure if it works for the SL spotting enemies, but I would assume it will if the enemy is within a certain radius area of the SL!
