Does a mod affect normal play

When downloading different mods will they afffect your normal game play on ranked servers? Will it look like you are cheating? I like some of the mods out there but am scared to install because I would like to continue to play on ranked servers.

Nope, a mod installs itself separate from the main (ranked) game files. You can switch back and forth between normal BF2142 and mods with a single click. It's safe to install :)

Put it this way you have a log ( normal 2142 wich you play ranked with )
you get a knife ( a mod ) and put it in the side , its a little add-on that you can pull out of your log at anytime ;)
