I awoke to the sound of the steel banging from the engine room, I thought it was just a maintenance check. I didn't know that those metalic sounds would be some of the last we would hear aboard The Big One.
As I finally put on my uniform the bell rang, we were actually being attacked. We had all gone through drills and replicated situations to prepare us but that wasn't enough. Nobody had a clue where to go or what to do.
Our SL finally told us to get down to Corridor 1 and get ready to defend. Since we were Squad Alpha everything we did was supposed to be top notch so the others would follow example. Just last night I had had a conversation with Matthews about our duties.
" Do you think you could ever kill anyone to"
"Well, I think I could but then again I thought this war would last only a month" he replied.
So I grabbed my RDX's and APM Mines as I was our squad's explosives engineer. By the time I was down to the corridor there was fire at the end and somehow snow had gotten in at the back of the hall.
"I guess we made those missiles a little too strong" someone joked.
I moved up the hallway not sure of what I would find so a medic Hardiman, to be exact, was forced to come with me in case there was a Baur waiting at the other end. The bombs were placed, our Sentry's were up and the shields were down all we could do was wait.
Finally there was an explosion and two PAC's came rushing in just to meet my APM. We knew everything we had feared, everything we worked to keep from happening was about to unfold within the next day. We received orders to pack up and leave our corridor.
"What's going on?"
"Who sent that foolish order?"
We were assigned to go to corridor two and help Bravo Squad get ready for an attack that had been pre-determined.
There was another explosion, this time much larger then we heard footsteps, yelling and gunfire. The speaker came on in our NetBAt helmet's
"Reactor Console Failure In Sector One, Blue Corridor."
Well, our lives had been saved when the SL took us out of there.
"Hold 'er steady"
That was a pretty strange order but I realized it was for our marksman. There was a grenade that managed to come in to our hall, it set off our bombs and killed Hardiman, the battle for our titan had begun.
The next part was more or less a blur to me, a noiseless blur and I couldn't figure out why. They got to our reactor room.
My NetBat died and I had no idea what to do or where to go I just kept yelling
I need new orders!"
I can remember what happened after the last time I said that. We were in the reactor room and our SL was all but dead, the reactor blew, a jolt of electricity blew out and hit him, he was dead in an instant.
Most of our men went running to the Cargo Bay unaware that it meant a sure death. There had been mines set up all through there. After I watched a few explosions I knew what was best for me, get to a transport ship.
Just as I took off the titan started to fall and when I looked back she was on the ground. Somehow I managed to fly across all of the battlefield in Minsk without getting spotted.
I had thrown out my dogtags back in the reactor room so now everyone would think I was dead. At times I honestly thought I was.
Without hearing anything the whole trip back I wound up crashing the transport. I woke up days later in a hospital bed in Moscow, they had spotted me go down when EU ships were out on patrol.
I was never told this, it was all wrote out on a piece of paper. That was strange. Finally a doctor came in and asked what had happened in our defense of the titan.
I told him how we had been in corridor one and were then moved to corridor two. I also told him about Hardiman dieing and my NetBat going out on me during an explosion an.... I was stopped there.
My NetBat hadn't faded, in fact it still had half of it's charge left. Somehow, two shards of glass had gotten up into by helmet and completely ripped off my left ear. This caused nerve damage and I lost all sense of hearing.
Well this just took me back and I thought I would pass out but for some reason I couldn't.
I looked back at what had happened in the previous days, Hardiman helping me get those bombs down and then being killed by one himself or our SL (whose name I was never told) getting blown up in the reactor room. T
This made me think maybe this won't be so bad, maybe I can't hear but at least I'm not dead.
