It think this is my new favorite weapon next to the clark. I racked up 26 kills in a row shooting down transports and the gunship. It is bugged though, doesn't always lock on and doesn't always do as much damage.

Yes i know about the bugs and what-not but what is actually different than the normal stock weapon?

Differance is that it works much like the Emp on the walkers and AA emplacments. But it kills rather than stuns ;) 4shots for a transport, 2 for a GS. 2 shots a clip.

Is there a trick for getting a lock-on in any AA gun, i.e. the fixed emplacements too? I haven't played enough in an AA gun to figure it out. Do you need to keep the ship in the recticle after you get tone (until the missile tracks)? Or are the missiles really *that* bad at keeping lock?

The Lock on, or rather lack of it is a bug. I explained my theory on why it doesn't work in a seperate thread.

sweet nice post. Yeah makes sense - aim head-on or going away. At the best of times I can't usually even SEE my danged missiles when they fire, so who knows. When I am in the top seat in the walker, I usually fire them point blank at tanks on the odd chance they'll hit and do 1% damage (seems the best I can do with 'em). But they usually swoop off into the sunset.

Its three shots

If they don't have engineers healing them, of course ;)

I do find it a little odd that the default AT weapon takes 90+ health away, yet the "AA" Missles only take away 50. Not that I'd like to see the AA gun do more, but the default guided AT weapon works much better on near air targets than the SAAW does. Plus it still gives the alert tone, which will cause most gunship/transport pilots to take evasive action, even if you have very little chance of hitting them.

EA isn't known for making new skins/models for weapons. Just look at 1942. Ahh, the good old days of the japs running around with K98s, MP40s, and Potato Mashers.

Actually the SAAW does lock-on you just don't see the targeting reticule indicating it. When you are aiming at a transport and it is doing the bug, wait a second or two then fire, it should track it like normal, if not then switch to your smg and switch back real quick. Works 90% of the time for me. Like i said it may not indicate that you have a lock but you prolly do, just take a shot and see if it tracks.

It just ends up going in an arch and hits the ground, same even when it's locked on for me. Only rarely does the missile actually go for the transports. Gunships I have no problems with. And yes, I hold down the button to keep the scope up when the second missile is fired.

Yeah i had the bug happening last night in the fixed AA, i just waited a few seconds and pretended i was locked on and when i fired sure enough the projectiles would still home in and hit the transports.

I am not convinced. In another thread you stated that:
It is a Fire and Forget weapon. You just need to shoot the missile at the right time. The missile will attempt to track on it's own the moment you fire. If you fire it at the wrong time (The target moving horizontal from you) than you WILL miss.

But couldn't that very well be the reason why you can only hit aircrafts heading toward you? That it is not Fire and Forget and you lose lock?

My own experience tells me that it works just like the AT missiles.

You could be right, but I would like to see a movie of the SAAW having Fire & Forget behaviour. As long as the enemy is heading toward you, the missile could very well hit by just continuing on is set course, even if it is not tracking any more.

If its exactly like the stock AT weapon why even include this in the game?

I didn't say that, I said it works the same by which I mean that it is guided. Its just that the "lock-zone" gives you a better chance of hitting a aircraft.

Beside that it differs from the standard AT in having two shots, a faster projectile, and a different warhead.

It's an AA gun but they reused the normal AT weapon models and sounds. It will lock onto aircraft but not tanks, it will do damage to aircraft but not tanks.

Sometimes when I add it to my kit and spawn, i'll curse myself for not checking it thinking i've not selected the right unlock.

Maybe the weapon just has multiple uses depending on the ammo you use with it.
