You'd be at a great disadvantage with mono sound! Actually, I don't know how it's possible to have mono unless one of your speakers is broken lol

5.1 all the way:rock:
I used to play with some expensive Sennheiser headset and thought the sound was incredible... then I tried it on a set of mid-range Logitech 5.1 and actually heard what I was missing.
If the sound is cut down to mono... I don't think I would last a day before tearing my hair out:p

Are you serious? WHO THE HELL WOULD BE PLAYING ON MONO? Hell even with stereo if you could avoid it... there is positional 3D sound and your asking if anyone plays on MONO?!!?!?

Stereo, 7.1 Surround Sound.
Thats a contradiction. It's either stereo (2 channel) or surround 7.1 (7 channel + sub). You can't have both at the same time.

you have a life indeed, its made of playing computer games and discussing them in internet forums and making threads about what kind of sound technology people use.... yes thats a way of life... and i think its pretty much the same life everyone else in a internet forum has...
you know, u may have a point, but as soon as u say something like that you pretty much kill your point...

Mono is fine if you have an older sound-card.
Mono doesn't mean that you can't locate where the sound is coming from - it's just a bit harder. This while surround-nonsense is hyped up by Best Buy store-clerks and gobbled up by impressionable youth.
The soundscape in BF2142 is not exactly subtle and you have the hit-indicator to tell you whether you should turn left or right to acquire the shooter.
I've got the Creatice X-fi card set at max and it just adds some extra and rather useless ambient noise to everything.
Going mono can save you some resources if your PC is on the edge...

Stereo lets you easily find out the direction of fire, as one speaker will amplify the sound more than the other, hence it means its coming from the amplified side.
But its not that much of a difference, the only advantage of stereo is that you can hear the place where he is firing from before the person hits you, as you can always use the hit direcition arrow thing.

I have the sound completely turned off most of the time. I have another PC behind me and I play many of the thousands of songs on my AOL Music Now account, or listen to recorded interviews from Coasttocoastam.com, rense.com, or prisonplanet.com while playing...all the annoying messages and foreign language messages just annoy me, and are very seldom helpful.....if I am playing Commander, I type in ALL CAPS to the whole team when I need something done.

LMAO! OMG you assume because I have stereo speakers I don't have a life?!?!?! WOW. DUDE where have you been for the last 20 years? Hiding under a rock? Your the one who obvoiusly needs a life if you actually need to ask if anyone is using MONO sound. Anything aside from a PHONE usually has stereo sound or better these days. MP3 players? Yup. Computers? Yup. Radios? Yup. Where have you been?
Come on please come up with another stupid comment! PLEASE! They are funny!

Well if you had an X-Fi theres no reason to try and save resources as far as the sound goes anyways... it does all the sound processing ON THE BOARD. So the CPU isn't processing anything as far as the sound goes if you have that card. I know, I have one. And WHY WOULD YOU GO MONO? Stereo and mono take the same system resources as far as the computer is conserned. It's the positional 3D sound that takes additional processing.

I find it difficult to believe that a PC capable of running BF2142 does not come with a onboard stereo card. My previous min-spec PC did, and my current med spec PC has 7.1
But I use a 5.1 USB headset.
Someone mentioned the hit indicator, but for me it is not as much about locating direction of incoming fire, it more about hearing when and from where vehicles approaches. That will save your life.

LarryWhy the hell would you play with your sound off? That must take away so much from your gameplaying experience. Nice hearing from a fellow Coast To Coast and Prison Planet listener, though. I just listen to the shows when I am at work, or traveling to and from work.
I got X-Fi Fatal1ty card and used to use Medusa 5.1 headphones, but the mic broke, so I bought the Sennheiser pc160s. Having positional sound helps not only hearing where shots are coming from before you get hit, but also vehicles and also footsteps and enemy chatter.
You get used to the Russian - actually does anyone else find themselves randomly spouting Russian words from the game? "Rashaar!" (Medic)

I play Commander a lot, and I find when there is not the constant annoying, not useful messages, I can concentrate a lot better. I don't issue these as Commander. If I want to communicate I just type in ALL CAPS and tell folks what to do. When I am not playing Commander, I have the sound back on some. I guess it just an old folks thing ! LOL
