View Full Version : TK Discussion: Punish or Forgive?

Ok, I want to hear it from some of you guys. If you get TKed, do you punish or forgive? When I am playing, I ALWAYS forgive, unless someone knifes me in the Titan spawning area or something rediculous like that. But it seems almost everyone else punishes. The ratio of forgive to punish is like 1:8, if that. Also, here are some scenarios:
1) You are capping a silo, when a Titan gunner kills you while its gray. Forgive or Punish? (If you play Conquest, just imagine )
2) You are in hectic close quarters combat in either a city map or inside the Titan, when you spot an enemy. You rush forward, and soon get into a circle-strafing bunny fest. Thats when a teammate spots your situation, and runs over and kills the guy. Unfortunatly, a few bullets hit you too. Forgive or Punish?
3) Your team has just taken the enemies Titan core room, but no one has weapons capable of taking it out. Thats when a lone recon comes in, lays RDX all over, and DOES NOT WARN YOU before blowing the core. Forgive or Punish?
These are all assuming that it was purely accidental, no one was going out for you, and you will not be getting revived.
Also, may I propose a change in the Punish/Forgive system? Make it so that you cant punish/forgive until you are "dead", because time and time again I have TKed an assault guy, quickly said sorry, he still punishes, but I have the good will to still revive him.

1:Punish to teach him a lesson about checking his minimap for friendlies for barraging, unless he does "I'm sorry." then Forgive.
2:Forgiven 9 times out of 10. Good intentions, but with how craptastic lag and netcoding is, he could have aimed right and still hit me trying to help. Difference being number 2 didn't have the luxury of sitting on a Titan safely to make his decision.
3:Forgiven. That Recon is the most important person in the room, at that time. Blowing the Core and winning>Not Team-killing. Besides, what were you doing in RDX range of the Core without being able to destroy it? Shouldn't you have been watching the doors for enemy?

Unless it is completely obvious that it was intentional I always forgive. unlike the dil*os who get caught in the spread of an APM when detonated by an enemy attack..................FFS GROW UP!
As for the examples.....Forgive

Just to clarify, you dont necessarily need to answer the questions/scenarios, I would just like everyones opinion on TKing and the punish/forgive system.

But people have given their views plenty of times before - just use the search facility and you'll find a thread called 'I will intentionally TK you if..." for just one of many examples.

I ripped my Commander a new one today, he scared me so badly. Saw a Support barrel as I came around a corner, knew I was meat, and just hosed him down out of reflex before I saw what color armor he was wearing. Fortunatly he Forgave after I Revived, and said Sorry on VC and Comms.

1) You are capping a silo, when a Titan gunner kills you while its gray. Forgive or Punish? (If you play Conquest, just imagine )
Punish. He should check his minimap. He has not more reasons to think an ennemy is capping the silo than he has to think that a friendly is.
2) You are in hectic close quarters combat in either a city map or inside the Titan, when you spot an enemy. You rush forward, and soon get into a circle-strafing bunny fest. Forgive, it's obviously an accident.
3) Your team has just taken the enemies Titan core room, but no one has weapons capable of taking it out. Thats when a lone recon comes in, lays RDX all over, and DOES NOT WARN YOU before blowing the core. Forgive or Punish?
Forgive.
Its our job to get in a safe place for the recon to be able to do his work. If you camp teh reactor room, get yourself in a protected area.
If you just fire at the reactor, you'd see him planting his RDX. It's your responsibility if you die from his RDX.
Except maybe if he plants a single RDX and blow it straight away, not giving anyone a couple of seconds to get in a safe place.

I don't usually punish unless I know it was intentional. And basically for that the guy has to look right at me and type something like "Eat shottie, biatch!" and then pull the trigger. Then I will punish.
that being said...
1) Forgive unless it is the 3rd or 4th time they have done it. Sometimes I have been shot at by the titan guns and I haven't automatically said "Cease Fire!" So I'd give the benefit of the doubt.
2) Would absolutely forgive 99 percent of the time unless it was a really stupid tk.
3) Depends. If the person is a newb (like say ranks 1 through 6 or 7) I will punish probably and hope they would figure it out and not do it again. But I will only generally punish if I see them laying the RDX and then watch them blow it 2 seconds later. Otherwise I give the benefit of the doubt again and figure they tried to warn but I didn't see them or something.
What I *will* do is track someone down who punished me for an obvious, unavoidable tk (like they spawn two feet in front of my tank while I am scooting out of the base). I will basically hunt them down and make them tk *me* until they get kicked from the server. I will stop before they get kicked if they ask me why I am stalking them, though. I will explain that it is bad manners to punish for accidents and then back off at that point.
Immature? Probably...
Satisfying when you see this?:
Newbster [teamkills] Mattsville
Nebster has been kicked from the server for excessive teamkills
Most definately...It really irks me when people punish for no good reason.

i always forgive unless the TK was on purpose, oh yeah...i always punish my bro if im playing with him cos he annoys me. i forgive for all of your examples but i hate it when 5 full squads are in the core and ur the only recon and you RDX the core...i stand there saying "move, please...its gonna blow"...no one moves...."move out the f**king way!" (top left - "WARNING!!! jameslcfc you're language is unnaceptable....")...."last chance im gonna blow it..."
THEN!
BOOM!
5 full squads TK'd and all punish. and makes u look like an idiot sitting at the bottom of the scoreboard with -100 TW score.

not,
its good to see people on the forums not punishing, I've seen an increased amount of people that don't punish for tk's anymore. I think its been a few weeks since i've been punished for a tk. Maybe its because I've gotten better and preventing myself from tking, or maybe the community is more respectful.
I don't punish, unless the same guy does it to me twice on purpose, first time is forgivable.
Though i will tk if I yell 'Need medic' or 'need supplies' and they look at me with a puzzled face for 2 minutes as i continue to spam the radio command, and then they run away. I'll help myself to their kit if they dont know how to use it.

1. when a titan AA gunner TKs me while i am capping a flag, i ALWAYS punish except if there are huge tank formations amassing at the flag, or he apologises AND types a reason (no, spamming "apologies" isn't going to get you a PadeDown). and good chance to ask - don't they get the team damage message? cos it usually takes 3 barrages to kill me.
2. forgive, of course. unless he starts teabagging me =D
3. almost always punish. how hard is it to spam "Go, go, go!" a few times?! i understand that sometimes they want to rush to be the one to detonate first when 5 recons place 25 RDXs on the core, which is why i punish even more so. the only time i forgive a recon who doesn't warn is when there are enemies comine into the reactor room. sometimes by force of habit the recon clicks by accident (i know cos i've done it twice =D), and sometimes he just wants to end the game before he dies. usually he gets a -2 for suicide anyway, so let him be and hope that he was really thinking about the win ^^

I usually forgive. I ask myself if it was a legitimate mistake or not (sometimes naive probably). But I always think about if i think he could see my name in blue, or if there was an enemy beside me, or lots of things. Its all situational.

The whole point of the punish system is to kick intentional TKers off the server. Even retarded accidental TKs - like being blown apart by transport guns at a neutral silo - are still accidental.
TKing for vehicles or kits is intentional, so they're the only people who get my punish votes.
Not that I get the punish/forgive votes often. FF Off/Punish Off servers for the win etc.

punish, forgive, punish, i like too forgive grenades when i'm coming at the corridors from the front though, i just feel that a recon killing half his team in the core room, is kinda rediculus, we could take it down faster with bullets

Unless its obvious the player is a moron I will always forgive.
Most people however, don't. Yesterday I started out on belgrade, EU side, I take the tank and head towards the walker spawn. A fav flies past me with 3 people in it. Where it bumps into the pac tank (Anyone could have seen that one comming) what does he do? He puts the gear in full reverse and backs into my tank at full speed, and ofcourse he blows up, resulting in me starting the round with a score of -9 for 3 tks resulting from a stupid driver.
Gets you pissed of sometimes, especially since you always forgive and would do it in the same situation

I agree, I think tk punishes are way, WAY down. I got the game about 2 weeks after it came out and if you even so much as made a funny face at someone they would punish you back then. It was ridiculous.
But things seem to have calmed down now and I haven't been punished for an accidental tk for a while now. Even the Christmas newbs don't seem to punish as much in my opinion so I think it might be a cultural thing? As in people that have been in the 2142 community for awhile are less likely to punish people, so in turn people (even newbs) are less likely to punish maybe?

i default to forgive - but if it's blatant, or they don't apologize, then I'll punish. Usually though, i can tell it was an accident immediately, so I forgive immediately.

Maybe it depends on a country by country basis? Here in Australia, people tend towards being pretty easy going by default. So maybe the lack of TK punishes is only a phenomenon Down Under?
Raidyr - To answer your question about the TK system and what people think about it, I personally think the TK system although it has it's problems and has its fair share of abusers, is still a neccesary one unfortunately. Otherwise you will have a$$hats who get their kicks teamkilling that would ruin the game for everyone if there isn't some way of kicking someone off of a server besides using a kick vote. Kick votes are fine, but I have only seen one be successful out of the hundreds that I have seen people try. So I think we really need a system like the current one unfortunately.

You left out "ramming a transport full of freindly into the enemy walker". If I had his address I would show him what punishment really is.
But seriously, I am pretty forgiving. Its always situation dependant. Mistakes are easily forgivable unless they are out of control. Ok, so guy accidently ran me over with the APC. Big woop. Ok, now dude ran me over 3 times. Time to punish. Long range shots with Tanks are also easily forgivable, as the names sometimes take forever (if ever) to show up. RDX on the core is very situation dependant. If dude runs right up, plants and blows without even hesitating hes got to go. If he gives us a hot second to GTFO the way then accidently blows me, then I forgive as its sometimes to hard to predict the blast radius. What I want to see is a punish system for the retards that wont GTFO the way of the core after you planted RDX. Basically forcing you to tk them even after you warn them.

Depends on the situation. If someone does reverse over me or I get killed by the jet engines from the shuttle I will forgive, you cant control that!
However....driving over me when you're facing me (i.e. blind people) or when I'm repairing you is unforgiveable. Same goes for those shuttle pilots who cant land properly so you get TKed by them. Also if I'm TKed by idiotic RECON Rdx spammers or nade spammers I dont forgive them.
Idiots dont get forgiven!! Unfortunate circumstances do!

However....driving over me when you're facing me (i.e. blind people)I've started throwing down sentry guns in front of oncoming vehicles just to stop the retarded driver mowing us all down on maps like Tunis Harbor. 1) Punish, always check the minimap
2) Forgive, i mean the guy saved you!
3) Forgive, you should always check the core for RDX, but i would Punish if he immediatley blows the RDX and himself and doesn't give me a single second to run away.

I think this happened to me the other night. My team was in their core and I was supply but I couldn't drop my ammo hub. It was bugged or something, I could hold it out but not drop it. Everyone was standing around me looking at me and there was nothing I could do. One of my team shotgunned me down  but I forgave him. :D

Usually forgive unless I'm convinced it was intentional.
1) You are capping a silo, when a Titan gunner kills you while its gray. Forgive or Punish? (If you play Conquest, just imagine )
Forgive if he killed me on his first barrage. If I survive the first barrage, and they let loose with a second that kills me, they get a punish. I'll chalk the first one up to excitement, but if they aren't paying enough attention to notice they're giving friendly fire and do it all over again (and again and again), well, I'm not THAT easy going about it.
Forgive if they just put a quick burst in there. If they just hosed the two of us down, and don't apologize, then punish. Next time wait for an outcome or move along... don't fire a long burst into a tight mixup like that and expect to be on my good side. ;)
3) Your team has just taken the enemies Titan core room, but no one has weapons capable of taking it out. Thats when a lone recon comes in, lays RDX all over, and DOES NOT WARN YOU before blowing the core. Forgive or Punish?
Punish. I have ZERO problem with Recon guys laying the RDX around and getting the glory (Hell, whenever I see a recon planting it, I'll go out of my way to make sure they're covered while their attention is on that job), but have the decency to let me know when it's time to high-tail it out of there. If they just indiscriminately blow it without warning, that's not cool.

Depends on what happens. If I'm running across to get a capture point and a guy hits me in a FAV, I will most likely punish him, same as in air transports with careless drivers. Drive safely douche bags! If I get hit by our Titan guns, punish and verbal slap, I hate that more than anything, its careless and annoying because sometimes you can't even punish them.
Now, if you shoot me in the back at a silo, I will NOT punish, but I would hope someone will heal me, otherwise I get the shaft instead of him because I miss my silo capture. I still wont punish people for accidental TK. If people abuse this function they should be temp banned perhaps, I mean, if you have 0 forgives, 5 punishes on TK maybe YOU should get kicked for not being able to get teh **** outta tha way!

PUNISH, there is always time to warn, or at least let the players turn round and see what's going on. PLUS he just cheated you out of a heroic halo drop to terra firma.

PUNISH, not only did he steal your kill, but he killed you too.
.
The other two points are fine, but I do not agree with this. He did not steal your kill if both of you are running in circles reloading. He merely wanted to help. Combined with the hectic battle around you and the likelyhood of strong recoil, plus lag, makes it really hard for him to focus his fire on the enemy that is about to gun you down.

I am very forgiving when it comes to TK's, though I do have my limits.
I usually always forgive a first time accidental TK, unless its blatantly on purpose..or one of those TK's where they wanted to prevent you from getting a Walker, or other desired vehicle.
RDX blowing on the core of a Titan, I dont know... forgive but often very irratated... I mean I am usually the assualt guy that drops a medic hub in the middle to heal the guys and stand and cover the rear entry, if some friendly recon runs in plants and blows it without so much as a get out... annoying.
Vehicle TK's are all to easy to do with BF, so unless the guy really went out of his way to run me over...forgive and usually apologise for them getting the penalty... 9/10 times its not thier fault.
I do appreciate those guys that take the effort to climb out and revive you before driving off again.

I try to always forgive unless someone really is blatent. I would forgive on all of the situations. Unfortuately, I'm in the vast minority. It is rare that I see someone forgive my TKs. It seems to me that people think that TK punish is their default action. No thought given. If you try to point out that the punish was not justified or it was accidental you just get a rash of "crybaby" (yes someone actually called me a crybaby, the under 12 year old population is well represented on 2142) for suggesting that they forgive.
My favorite was a guy (Mr. Seuss as I recall) ran up to me on the road as I was driving a jeep. When I stopped he TKed me and took the jeep. Go figure they spawn everywhere. When I asked him why he did it he said he needed to get somewhere quickly. When I said why not just ask me for the jeep (like I would have gotten out ... but I was curious) he said "most people won't so I just TK them." After calling a little BS on him he replied "I took the TK punish dude what is your problem." This is the attitude that you deal with and he is one of the only guys I punished. I assume the others (no matter how dumb) are accidental.

Punish Punish Punish, I've said it everytime this exact same kind of thread get started (use the search btw) If your stupidity resulted in my death, you get punished.
The punish feature is not intended for "accidental" TKs. The way I see it, very few people intend to kill a teamate, that's not the question though. It doesn't matter if you intended to kill me, the fact of the matter is your stupid actions resulted in the death of a friendly, they'd punish the beejesus out of you in real life, I'm going to punish you in the game.
As I've said before, I don't just always punish, if the situation is justified I will forgive, If I run into a room where a friendly just threw a grenade, he shouldn't be punished for that, and in fact I wish I could give him back any points he may have lost due to my stupidity, I won't punish if I'm not paying attention and wander in front of a jeep or walker, again, my fault.

1:Punish to teach him a lesson about checking his minimap for friendlies for barraging, unless he does "I'm sorry." then Forgive.
What about the idiots that decide to run infront of a moving vehicle when they are going full speed? Or the morons that enjoy proning right in front of you as you are firing your support MG into a squad of enemies? Finally, my all time favorite, the jackass that decides that it is a GREAT idea to run into an area when there is 3-4 guys pelting it with grenades.
My point is, sometimes the douchebag that gets teamkilled is at fault, yet they feel that a punish is in order to try and redeem some of their "D- average" pride.

The main thing I personally get angry at is when you throw a grenade and it bounces off a wall badly, killing a friendly resulting in an instapunish then take kit (if possible) and revive while spamming sorry.

My favorite is the Sentry Gun in the hall way of the Titan killing a Recontard spamming APMS at the door, and getting punished.
My suggestion and it probably will not be too popular, is to take 1 point (maybe 2) away from the punisher if they punish. That way someone has to atleast think about pressing page down before they do it.
Huh.
I bet your that guy who punishes after jumping from the transport when its low enough to land, and gets fried by the engines.
Anyone who lands a transport deserves to be punished.

Why is that? I am talking about the beginning of the map when there is a frenzy to get that first silo/flag, where like 3 people will pod out a 5 feet above the ground, get TKed, and punish.
Sugarbear (lol), what are you talking about? I read your post quite thoroughly. You are saying that all TKs should be punished, even when they are "accidental". I can honestly say that I get intentionally TKed once a week, IF that.
And people, please, stop with the "you are not smart/intelligent/educated" crap. This is the internet. For all we know you are an 11 year old on a Dell.

1. Forgive
2. Forgive
3. Punish
If, when teamkilled, the person who killed me had good intentions, (killing the enemy, taking a flag, defending flag, ect) then I'll forgive. Obviously, if it was a blatant tk, it's a punish.
PS: This is in response to the first post. :)

That's funny LMAO! It almost seems like that sometimes doesn't it?
But, the whole Tk punish situation has gotten much better in my opinion. Maybe it's just the servers I play on though?

You read it huh, well, try reading it again, and try taking your head out of your rectum next time, I say QUITE CLEARLY that I don't always punish, there are accidental TKs, the transport glitch being one of them, I don't punish for those types of things.
Seriously, a lot of people on this forum need to go back to school and take a few reading classes, I've noticed people just don't understand the concept.
/edit, and for clarification, I'm in the Army, the graphics aren't that great, and while stationed in Iraq my graphics card ran quite hot, although taking bullets hurts far worse IRL than it does here.

I mostly for give as the confusion of battle I have accidentally shot a few of my guys, but if the team member is obviously being an ***, then I punish away.

I thought you were being sarcastic at first, but you really don't see it. Air transports pick up soldiers just about as often as they drop them off. I like it when they land during captures so everyone can jump in and blitz the silos one after another. Its jumping out of an air transport while its landing that should be punished.
You jump out of the airplane just before it touches down on the airstrip? Ouch. Maybe the average pilot shouldn't read the "Kamikaze's Guide to Landing" every time they are being targeted and people would trust them enough to actually land safely.

I do not encourage excessive mindless punishing. In fact, I HATE PEOPLE that do that. If it's obviously a mistake, and it only happened once by that person so far in a round, I usually forgive them. If it's either on purpose, or out of SHEER stupidity, I then start punishing... but unless it's obviously on purpose, if they say they are sorry, I often forgive them even then too.
The only time I will ALWAYS punish is after I get killed multiple times by the same person, either on purpose, or just because they are plain DUMB and aren't getting that they need to STOP KILLING FRIENDLIES.
So it's very situational. But like I said, if on purpose (if it's obvoius), I punish... if they do something very stupid (something that even newer players should for the most part realize) to kill me, and DO NOT apologize, I will punish.... otherwise, I usually assume it was a mistake... and as long as it doesn't keep happening I will forgive.

1. Forgive
2. Forgive
3. Punish, depending on who it is. If it's a squad member, and he uses VOIP to tell us to move and I don't hear it, forgive. I play on texasteamplayers and this usually isn't an issue.
Forgiving is good. I only punish stat padders, TK for vehicle mongers, and blatant TKs (i.e. I am in front of your tank running in plain sight and you run me over, you knife me, etc.)

Difference being in this instance, that the guy sitting in the Titan gun console has all the time in the world to read a book and fire, without worrying about watching his back. He has no pressure whatsoever to fire quickly to protect himself, or get the shot off before being killed. He has time to scan the minimap, read a book, and talk to his wife before firing, whereas on the ground every second counts, and your minimap falls out of favor to what is in your immediate vicinity.

I always take into account the circumstances of my death and to wait to here for a "Sorry". 80% of the time I forgive.
Although, I always seem to get punished, even when I aknowledge my fault "Sorry".
Oh Well? Push Forward!

Punish. He should check his minimap. He has not more reasons to think an ennemy is capping the silo than he has to think that a friendly is.
Forgive, it's obviously an accident.
Amen!!!! with this exception on #1. If I'm capping a silo and a enemy tank or walker rolls up and starts laying down fire. I pray for titan fire.If I get killed by the titan gunner then I forgive, spawn on the titan and pod back to the silo.

Who cares? In the overall scheme of things in the game, a few points lost here and there are pretty meaningless.

There is quite a delay from the firing of the titans guns to the shells hitting the ground. especially at long ranges.
The trajectory of the shot is also very difficult to judge because of the immense "bullet drop" as it were.;)
Having manned the titan guns for several rounds I will always cut the titan gunners some slack if one shell goes slightly astray and takes me out.
Generally I forgive most people if they say sorry.
I do however punish if its a blatant tw*tty move. Like the donkey who shotgunned me in the face at the start of the round on the titan.:D
